I’ve been wanting to cover the "DX" series of colorization patches for a while, but due to an agreement with the powers that be, I can’t cover fan-mods for games that are newly released (or re-released) until a certain amount of time has passed. With the Game Boy Mega Man games now available on Nintendo Switch Online, that window has finally closed. I’m happy to report that the Mega Man World 4 DX colorization project is complete and ready for download!
The patch, created by Marc Robledo and Kensu Williams, delivers a full colorization of Game Boy Mega Man 4, aligning its presentation more closely with the NES version. Additionally, it includes some quality-of-life improvements, such as an NES-style pause menu, the elimination of slowdown, and a toggle option for the Charge Shot recoil.
You can download the patch from Marc's site here. While you're at it, be sure to check out the DX patches for Game Boy Mega Man 3 and 5!
I actually think this game's exceptionally good for a classic entry. It uses the 4 level split properly by upping difficulty in the second half, too!
ReplyDeleteI'd strongly suggest giving this one a go even if you didn't like 4-5 on NES.
Love these color hacks, I'll definitely be trying this at some point.
ReplyDeleteThanks for covering this. I completely understand. The games look fantastic and I have been waiting for these since MegaMania was cancelled.
ReplyDeleteMania being cancelled really stung bitd.
Delete6 months and 13 days later, huh.
ReplyDelete"I can’t cover fan-mods for games that are newly released (or re-released) until a certain amount of time has passed."
ReplyDeleteHi! Will you be covering Blade Armor X mod for Mega Man X DiVE Offline in the future?
When the next mod drops, yes.
DeleteDifferent anon here, is this a newer policy you've had to adopt? The Prometheus mod for X DiVE Offline got covered pretty much immediately, as was the Grey and Ashe mod so it seems like something has changed since then. Also, what are the specifics of this policy? Is it based on newer things coming out, or is it based on a certain amount of time passing, or etc. Does it have to do with specific authors/projects or is it anything fan made in general? That sort of thing.
DeleteIt's not a policy. I simply didn't get tipped off in time that the Blade Armor was out. I feel like it'd be "old news" now, but I will very much include it when I cover the next character mods. No worries!
DeleteFirst anon here.
DeleteThat's great to hear! We hope you look forward to our next project then.
You said hear and here. That rhymes.
DeleteOf course they rhyme, they’re homophones! >:U
DeleteCool. I always liked RW4.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how the game would play if Capcom remixed the Rockman 4 and 5 assets into a console version of the game, like Rockman 10. That would be kinda neat.
I don't see Capcom themselves putting that much effort into anything Mega Man related, fans probably would though.
DeleteFans put more hours in then crapcom obviously lol.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely, and many are still in denial over that.
Delete"but due to an agreement with the powers that be"
ReplyDeleteI don't understand, has Capcom mandated this? What are they giving you by being your partner, or I suppose, what would end up happening if you didn't have their cooperation, or them not having yours? Seems against the spirit of a fan blog if I'm understanding correctly.
This has been an informal agreement in place for about ten years. The core idea is that fan-made patches or mods that aim to "improve" on what Capcom currently published are discouraged, particularly if they’re released too soon after the official product. For instance, I probably shouldn't be sharing abiut a fan adding QoL improvements or custom sprites to MMBNLC within the first six months of its launch would be frowned upon. Similarly, releasing a "better" version of MM4 GB that might, in their view, pull players away from the NSO release would also fall under this guideline. The unwritten rule is a six-month window, after which I’m free to promote these kinds of fan projects.
DeleteThat is such a weird move. I understand from a company perspective, but it kinda makes Capcom sound like the kid who couldn't get a new toy and doesn't let anyone else get it either.
DeleteFirst anon here: And what would (or could) happen if you didn't abide by said unwritten rule?
DeleteIt would probably reflect poorly on our working relationship. I can imagine access to review copies would be on the chopping block.
DeleteUnderstood, thanks for explaining!
DeleteI was at a used video game store today I like to frequent when possible.
ReplyDeleteMega Man IV (GB), cart only, no case, no manual, no box, was $104.
Take that for what it is.
I saw one with a messed up label locally for $115, absolutely ridiculous.
Delete"a toggle option for the Charge Shot recoil."
ReplyDeleteThis really shouldn't exist, it's an excuse to make the game easier.
True.
