Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection Steam Update Breaks Online Play (Update)

Capcom has released an update for the Steam versions of both volumes of Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, primarily addressing behind-the-scenes adjustments. Unfortunately, the update has unintentionally taken the game's online functionality offline. Multiplayer battles, online trades, and other online features—including the ability to earn a specific completion star in BN2— have been down since yesterday, with no word from Capcom on the issue so far.

Fortunately, there are a couple of things you can do while waiting for an official fix. First, if you haven’t updated the game yet, head to your Steam settings and turn off auto-updates. Second, if your copy has already been updated, you can use a quick workaround. Prof9 has shared the following tip:

  • Open the Steam Console by pressing Win+R and entering steam://open/console.
  • Run these commands:
    • Volume 1: download_depot 1798010 1798011 6583874429443952093

    • Volume 2: download_depot 1798020 1798021 7279312862268001028
  • Once the files are downloaded, copy them over the game’s local files.

This should get the online functionality back up and running. We’ll keep you posted as soon as Capcom provides an official fix.

UPDATE: Capcom has rolled back the online-breaking update. Allowing Steam to update the game will restore it to the previous working version.

  1. Really bad considering one of the stars in BN2 requires you to do online battles

  2. A tip about how to avoid Steam updates:
    1. Right click any game in your library you don't want to update and click properties in the menu that pops up. Go into the Updates tab and set Automatic Updates to "Only update this game when I launch it".
    2. Make a digital backup of the game(s) you want to keep from updating on the version you want to keep them on.
    3. When an update is available, go ahead and let it update.
    4. When the update is finished, replace the files with the backup you made before.

After doing this process, you can now play the game on Steam without being forced to update. If you decide you want an updated build after all for some reason such as modding compatibility or etc. just go back into the properties menu from before, go into the installed files tab, and then click the button to verify the files are installed correctly. It will then compare your installation to their records of the most updated version and when it detects the mismatch it will replace the necessary files with the updated versions.

    1. The fact that Steam even ATTEMPTS to require updates before playing a game is a joke. I get using online features, but there is no excuse for merely launching if you intend to play single player.

That's basically another way of saying, "I don't care".

It's a meme. Basically, the "anyway…" is meant to completely invalidate the "oh, no!"

Think of it like the old saying, "And nothing of value was lost."

    3. It's a meme people use when they want to express the idea that they don't care.

    4. @2:12 PM Different anon here, it's a meme phrase that is meant to represent the fact the person saying it doesn't care. It's as though they were in the middle of a conversation and you just told them the news, and then they reply "Oh No!" Anyway" and get right back to their conversation as though it never happened.

    5. You don’t care about former PE Teacher, Buzzcut being fired for history of abuse on students? That’s what it sounded like he was doing!

Actually, he was getting an dishonourable discharge for his actions. He didn’t fit into civilian life well after returning stateside. His former comrades didn’t know about his dishonour, shunt him for his involvement in the unpopular war. He spent most of the time living off some savings he had, watching war related movies.

    8. Really? Why? That’s his thing. He disciplines students. He told one of them to kick him in the jimmy.

Okay… I think the reason is that… the other anons were hesitant because… to them it sounds like he’s saying… he’s going to be kicked in… the nuts!

No! It actually used to someone using inappropriate language!

  5. As the saying goes, "oopsie poopsie".

I seem to recall a Windows 10 update literally made the computer unusable until Windows 10 was reinstalled. Now, that was a catastrophe. And this is exactly why I disable automatic updates (where possible) and don't grab updates as soon as they're available.

    1. If WWW just rolled out this update instead of whatever shenanigans they did in the games, they would’ve won by BN1. :p

  8. Honestly, kinda embarrassing.

Incidentally, the April 2020 patch notes for Zero/ZX LC are the most unintentionally funny patch notes I’ve ever seen. Who in their right mind is playing a GBA game with *33* input devices?!

    1. Technically all 6 games in the collection are DS games, as the versions of the Zero games ported into the collection are the DS enhanced Zero Collection re-releases.

But yeah, 33 input devices is pretty wacky. It's such an extreme number that at that point whatever issues you're having in games are your own fault.

    2. Do you have proof that they're the ds versions of the games?

      Delete
    3. Yes. There's a number of specific changes made in the DS versions, such as the quality of the music and some of the flicker effects when enemies are hit being updated. The DS collection's menu music can also be found in the game files, the DS version's English translation (which is often criticized for being censored) is the one present in the games, and the change made to Zero 4's ending in the DS collection is also preserved.
