The
Mega Man 10th anniversary collage has been a fan favorite for over 25 years. Packed with nearly every classic series character up to
Mega Man 8, it’s fun to take in—but the original version looked a little bit different.
Draft top, finished version on bottom
Artist Midori Tomoe, who was hired by Capcom in 1997, recently
found the rough draft, and it’s full of interesting changes. Characters were moved around, some looked different, and there are even handwritten notes for revisions. For instance, Drill Man barely made the cut and had to be squeezed into the bottom-left corner, drilling through the ground.
This is the first time the draft has ever been shared publicly. Even Capcom hasn’t included it in their many art books, making it a real treat for us to dissect. I’m grateful Tomoe not only found it but kept it in such great shape!
If you'd like to keep tabs on Tomoe's work, give him a follow here.
I’ve actually never seen even the completed piece before. I like how Drill Man is coming out of the ground, as if he just coincidentally appeared in this massive group shot. Between this and being forgotten by Ground Man’s creator, guy gets the short end a lot…
ReplyDeleteThe completed piece used to be all over Mega Man fansites in the late 90s-early 2000's. It was also sold as a poster in Japan and I'm not 100% sure but it might be in the mm20 and r20 artbook.
DeleteThat's awesome. I love seeing before and after pictures of art.
ReplyDeleteI've never actually seen this art before, I really glad I have now! It's also neat seeing the original concept for it!
ReplyDeleteInteresting behind-the-scenes look. A proper scan of this piece would be nice, too.
ReplyDelete"Woo, I'm Drill Man!"
ReplyDeletemegamans face looks better on the draft

DeleteNice! Besides Drill Man, Mecha Dragon is also missing in the sketch. Doc Robot is in the sketch, but not in the final.
