Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 Sales Top 1 Million Units

Capcom has updated its Platinum Titles chart for the fiscal year, listing software that has sold one million or more units worldwide. As of September 2024, Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 has reached one million cumulative sales across PlayStation 4, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2, originally released in 2018, has become the 5th Mega Man game to surpass one million units sold since 2015 and the 9th million+ selling Mega Man title overall. Though not as popular as Legacy Collection 1, this milestone was likely reached through Capcom’s steady push via discounts, deals, and bundles of evergreen software from previous fiscal years.

Overall sales for the franchise remain at 42 million units, unchanged from the previous report in September. This figure had risen by one million in the previous fiscal year, suggesting that Legacy Collection 2 was likely the driving factor.

  1. X6 and X7 did it. People front, but they bought it to hear those sweet tunes while being able float slowly across the room with very stiff animation...

    1. Not wrong. Our Blood Boils could play for Wily Capsule 7 and I’d feel just as invincible.

    2. People often say there’s no reason to buy Legacy Collection 2 (although X8 deserves a chance, as it was a turning point for the X series after several missteps). But the truth is that the notorious X6 and X7 actually spark a lot of curiosity—some fans just want to see if these games are as bad as their reputation suggests.

In fact, some players end up pleasantly surprised. While X6 and X7 are often considered the weakest entries in the Mega Man series, they’re nowhere near the level of the worst games of all time. These games come across as mediocre rather than disastrous, especially compared to notorious titles like Sonic '06, Pokémon Sword/Shield, Big Rigs, or Hong Kong '97. X6 and X7 are still complete games with questionable design choices, whereas many of the “worst games of all time” feel like they were released in an unfinished, beta-like state.

      Delete
    3. I’d go a step further, and say most “worst games” that are part of a bigger series are at least on par, but irregular (:p) in a way that creates a stigma amongst older fans, and the infamy spreads from there. X7 is a great example, because in general, it’s a completely fine game. Performs well, not very glitchy, stable, controls well, can be reasonably beaten, even manages a great diverse soundtrack and fully voiced cutscenes in two languages! All of this is for naught though, because of the controversial choice of including 3D, and other Mega Man specific short-comings (I’ll admit, the weapons aren’t too exciting).

Compare all that with Big Rigs, a barely functioning game with no music and meager content, all wrapped in a box covered with broken promises.

    4. Man, comparing X6 to X7 is so wrong, one is a proper game, the other is a reskinned Devil May Cry engine, the final boss is a rehash from DMC1, showing you how much they care about megaman, that is, 0 care.

I never played Devel May Cry so are you talking about Mega Man X7?

    6. X7 wasn't developed by a designated team who knew about 3D environment and mechanics, it was developed by people whose work was just doing ports of games to new consoles in Capcom, Capcom gave them pressure and the job to do a 3D MegaMan X game without knowing too much about it, that's why X7 is what it is, isn't a bad game but surely it would be more better if it was developed in 2D or 2.5D rather than 3D. But Sony was just showing exigencies to Capcom to stop 2D Pixel art games cuz for them are things of the past and not worth for promoting their new consoles.

      Delete
    7. Also Mega Man X7 was one of the earliest and best examples of fully Cel Shaded graphics (at least in the cutscenes). They were doing things in cutscenes back then that some have STILL not caught up to these days.

Imagined if they continued and got better. Right now they probably would have put ArcSys to shame... Either that or they are ArcSys now, seeing as how Capcom bleeds talent so much lately.

    8. @4:28 pm, X7 was not one of the earliest examples of cell shaded graphics, there were many cell shaded games years before x7 ever existed.

    9. I'd argue that X5 and X8 were the bigger selling points in the collection. Although not entirely without controversy, they're the more positively received entries in the 2nd half of the collection. If X6 and X7 did contribute to the sales, it was more likely due to people wanting to see for themselves if they're really as bad as people say.

Regarding X7 specifically, I'd actually go so far as to describe it as a really good idea executed really poorly. That extends to pretty much every aspect of the game. It could have been a significant innovation on the formula, but instead what we got feels kind of rushed and sloppily put together. It still annoys me after all these years that it has inspired a lot of people online to believe that a Mega Man X game just can't work in 3D when in reality X7 is just a bad take on the concept.

      Delete
    10. @12:44: I mean I disagree. I don't think everything in X7 is executed poorly.

The music is clearly banging. Like many of the things that made Mega Man X - Mega Man X in a good way was retained(outside of gameplay and perhaps X not being immediately playable and people's perceived characterization of him). It's not like they got brand new character designers and musicians. There's no way they lost their talent and their passion that much between entries. If X6 has some of the greatest music in the franchise, you can't tell me the same exact composers who did the sequel fell off a cliff that hard.

X7 is not that bad in general, I mean relatively speaking. It might be somewhat lackluster, but it's not terrible in the general scheme of bad games. I would say the people who exaggerate how bad it is, are way worse than the people who apologize for it. I remember the game grumps complaining about clear simple perceived problems (like switching lock on that they didn't figure out on their own) that were easily addressed, to the point where people had to call them out for it, people who even hated the game already.

    11. I never played X7 but I've seen some videos of it, I think the idea of Red Alert is neat, I liked Red's sort of fatherly relationship to Axl (and how Axl saw Red Alert as a sort of family in general), I like Axl, I liked Zero's voice in the game he sounded more mature and I liked that. music is good. Thats it.

    3. It’s been 6 years since 11, we aren’t getting a new game. Most of the people who worked on the series aren’t even at Capcom anymore.

      Delete
    4. Honestly, X8 is better storywise, It's tired to see Sigma coming back 7 times, even that people overrate X4 it's plot itself could've been better if Sigma wasn't there honestly.

      Delete
    5. Well, I think that can be said for most of the people who worked on Capcom’s flagship series. Key figures certainly remain, though. We know there’s still a Mega Man Dev Team at Capcom (as of 2024), with Eguchi serving as a kind of “front man.” While his latest work was on MMBNLC, he continues to represent the IP. I don’t want to assume he’s the current producer, but he’s definitely still part of the team.

      Delete
    6. X4's plot would completely break down if Sigma wasn't there. I don't even care if Sigma comes back over and over, especially if it's for "better plot" reasons. He gets different designs and such anyway.

      Delete
    7. I generally don't mind Sigma returning from game to game but it's nice to get a break whenever possible. There's a lot of potential for X and friends to have other threats and moral dilemmas to face that have nothing to do with Sigma, and it kind of gets old that the only reason anyone does anything wrong in X's world is because Sigma made them do it.

I'd like to see storylines like X having to face off against human extremists who hate reploids, or old robots from the Classic era appearing and going berserk, or just anything that doesn't involve Sigma or he's actually just completely innocent for once and only ends up being a fight because X doesn't trust him, whatever it takes for us to get more stories that aren't just Sigma's plots.

      Delete
    8. Sigma for X9! Technically Gate went berserk by himself.

    9. @8:53 AM Yeah, Sigma didn't want or need Gate's help. Pretty sure he was kind of pissed at Gate for what he did.

    10. X4 is praised for its gameplay, not so much for its story. The entire Repliforce conflict is a series of misunderstandings, with questionable character decisions, not exactly a great example of storytelling. Ironically, the game that is usually praised for its plot but has Sigma's presence as a negative point is X6.

      Delete
    11. I thought X4s story was pretty good. I struggled with gameplay but that's cause playing as zero on a keyboard on an emulator is a bit of a hassle (it's why I don't want to emulate PS1 games anymore)

Sonic just relies on reviving the old games and the Edgy sonic are the only thing that are keeping it from Inexistence, without those Sonic doesn't have nothing else to offer, huh even trying to copy DBZ with that White Hedgehog from the future didn't work for them. MegaMan just have a bad timing, a Bad producer decisions in the 2000, and Capcom over saturating the market with him. Although he is still relevant at this days but still not in his best days yet. I'm pretty sure in an alternate timeline If Sega was owner of RE, MH, And Street Fighter I'm pretty sure they would've been put Sonic aside leaving him with nothing, same as MegaMan place now.

That’s actually a really good point at the end. Besides Sonic and Yakuza, most of SEGA’s big series are from other studios (Persona, Total War, Puyo Puyo, frigging *Angry Birds*). Meanwhile, Capcom basically won the survival horror and tournament fighter wars of the 90’s/00’s, and Mega Man was just gravy. Now that I think of it, it’s probably closer to say Mega Man is Alex Kidd than Sonic.

    9. If I'm being honest I'd say they're about equal. I love sonic games and the story/characters in them and I love Mega Man games and it's story/characters. I have never played every game from either series ( I tried playing the classic mm games but I just can't enjoy em sorry) but I try to play the ones that I can because I know it'll be a pretty good time. Both series also have flaws, particularly in plot and sometimes in gameplay. I can't really say one is better because I like them both too much 😅.

  7. Nah, I think MM series in general is far better than classic Sonic. I played Sonic games in the 90s. Looking back and with different standards, the level design is repetitive more than most games, and I like the gameplay, blowing stuff up, and more complex story of the MM stories in general. Even classic MM feels more mature than classic Sonic, and enemies stay destroyed (aside from some robot masters supposedly being rebuilt later or Wily surviving a lot). I like Wily more than Eggman. Not saying Sonic is bad. Shooting stuff is funner than Mario style jumping on enemies or Sonic hitting enemies in a ball form, I think.

I know you'll feel like, "I'm free to do what I want", but I'm telling you, in real life if you feed bears they're not cute cuddly creatures. They'll become a problem. Same for raccoons and stuff. Don't feed trolls dude, they effect more than you.

Not only that but people need to stop caring about what other people think about games so much. Who cares if somebody thinks Sonic is better, if you think Mega Man is better then just let him think Sonic is better...

      Delete
    2. Not sure what you mean by “enemies stay destroyed.” I guess Metal Sonic was frequently rebuilt, but most bosses are just Robotnik in a different machine, pretty much a Wily expy. In fact, that complaint could easily be flipped, considering the respawning enemies. :p

Though Mega Man had better Continue etiquette than most of Genesis Sonic. I hope whoever’s idea it was to put limited continues in all those games got a stern talking to.

    3. What exactly does Sonic have to do with Mega Man?

    4. >Complaining about limited continues.
Just get good unironically, you have to put the effort. It's this kind of reasoning why lives don't exist in the modern games.

      Delete
    5. Ah, I’m not complaining for my sake (at least for Sonic 1), I just don’t think it’s a good design philosophy in general. Limited continues is arguably worse than no continues, at least that has the benefit of the doubt of whether they could even program it in. But limited continues is some bizarre mutation of arcade design that equates esoteric performance to quarters.

      Delete
    6. Nope, it comes down to mastering the game as long as the game is not +3 hours long and honestly all the Sonic games are easy. Besides, at least in Sonic games you can extend the continues. If you think that's unfair, just wait until you find out about arcade games that limit continues after a certain point regardless of how many coins you insert.

      Delete
    7. "Bro, you have to stop taking the bait by clear trolling..."

Tell that to the guy who brought it up in the other thread. He started the trolling and look how many posted under him taking the bait as you say it yet you aren't complaining about that. That's odd that you (whoever you are) are singling me out. I preferred not to post under him and just post here, though maybe I should have.

As for enemies staying destroyed (in the X series, most do stay destroyed with some exceptions). Do they truly in Sonic? The robots seem to be transformed animals. I was only talking about Classic Sonic on the Genesis, BTW. I never really played the 3D ones aside from one. I just feel more accomplishment killing enemies in MM than Sonic regardless. Funner to shoot them than bounce on them.

I guess different stroke for different folks, hmm? Better or worse is subjective.

      Delete
    8. "I'm free to do what I want"

I never felt that. There are limits to what I can and should do. A person with the attitude that they can 'do' whatever they want will land themselves in prison. Also this isn't real life, so I'm not worried. That guy expressed his opinion, I expressed mine. No harm, no foul. No need for double standards and singling me out for some odd reason. I did absolutely nothing wrong here. This is a place to express opinions, so what's the problem? There is no 'taking the bait' since it wasn't targeted at me and I'm not offended at all. All he did was express his harmless opinion and I responded. So what's wrong?

      Delete
    9. Ah I see, you meant more of the “sensation” from defeating regular enemies, and not with the story dealing with rivals staying “dead” after their first defeat. I’ll admit, enemies in Genesis Sonic are rather esoteric. A robot popping into a small animal is more cartoony and less visceral than a big explosion. Granted, I’d argue regular enemies in Genesis Sonic are more a minor inconvenience than a big part of the challenge like in Mega Man, and less emphasis on their defeat is appropriate. But as you said, different strokes. :p

      Delete
    10. @Gary Daniel: I didn't really signal you out. At the time you were one of the only ones that responded to the clear and blatant "Mega Man never was good. Sonic the hedgehog is better than him" troll. Actually you were THE first one. The only other guy who responded at the time was the one who said "Why are you here? = /" after your response...

So I didn't single you out. You were just the first one that responded, and I was the first one to tell you not to take the clear troll bait. No one else was here at the time.

That said, even if I did single you out, I guess I would have done so because I thought you were smart. I would have been just trying to give you a word of advice.

I can clearly see now that I was wrong about that. Anyway, sorry for trying to get you to stop feeding trolls, continue to feed them as you may.

Though IMO, you’re probably best off saving for a decent computer. Even PS2 emulation is pretty accessible these days.

      Delete
    5. Can you elaborate on this? What do you mean by “more accurate English versions of X6/X7?”

      Delete
    6. @9:53

The original intro of X6, and the endings of X6 and X7, used the vocal themes from the Japanese releases (instrumental for X7 ending). For XLC2, they made new songs to replace them (both in English and Japanese), presumably because licensing the songs globally was more headache than Capcom was willing to go through. Meanwhile in XAC2, all they had to do was *not* change those songs, since they were already included for the Rockman versions and licensing was already more-or-less sorted. Even the instrumental for MMX7 is included in XAC2, a song technically exclusive to the English release!

      Delete

Though I agree about letting stuff end, whether it got an ending or not. Cliffhanger busters be damned, I’d rather the series just move on, be it further in the timeline or a reboot (even if it’d probably suck without Inafune).

The only thing that really makes me wished it happened is Lan's long descendant that appears on the picture alongside Geo cuz in the StarF. 11. Going through the Capcom E3 2002 Press CD, there's an HTML file with the following description: "Play as Mega Man's pal Zero, the reploid from the Meg Man X series turned good by the infectious Sigma Virus and 100 years of sleep." That's only a part of it, but it's funny how the whole "Did the virus turn Zero good?" question was already answered that long ago prior to Capcom publishing X1's internal game design document. I also get not to trust every piece of marketing and that it isn't even from the game's country of origin, but there you go("Mega Man's pal", hahah). The text is presented as is, all typos are verbatim.

For something completely different, for those that don't think so, X does have a subtle and simple character arc starting in X1 through X3:
–In X1, X can't defeat Vava's Ride Armour, is rescued by Zero, is frustrated that he can't defeat all of the Irregulars with his power and Zero even comments that at that point he won't be able to defeat them but he can enhance his abilities through battle and counts on that he will become stronger than even Zero himself.
–While by the end of that game X theoretically catches up, Zero comes back in X2 with bulkier parts, a saber and a new combo.
–In X3, X can finally defeat both Vava and his Ride Armour without any help, gains an armour with bulkier parts and following the Nightmare Police early destruction/Dr. Doppler's sacrifice path(which I consider the canon path or at least canon to the X series continuity) with Zero temporally out of service by Mosquitus X inherits Zero's sabre gaining his own complete combo fully achieving his character objective.

After thinking of X's description of Wily in X5, I realised that the Wily from the X series isn't the same one as the one from the Original series. X refers to him as being more evil than Sigma and he's right, like, his Original self never willingly attempted to destroy the world. The X series is in a different continuity that follows a modified Original series continuity.

as the previous Zero ... ...But... there are things that cannot be seen or captured by data ... It was you, Zero, who taught me that . ... I can feel the evil in Zero now ! ... Like Sigma, no, even more evil!
      zero ...Then let's talk quickly...
X I will defeat you and
      restore the true Zero!

      English transcript:
X: Zero... you are Zero, aren't you...?

Zero: Hmm...Yes...The energy readings are still the same...and there is no Maverick reading, is there... You are reading my normal data. This is the true form of me...

X: It seems so... The data readings...... are the same as Zero used to be...still... You are not visible and cannot be analyzed correctly as data. You taught me that, Zero. I feel something evil within you...! Something evil similar to Sigma... Or should I say something more evil than Sigma!

Zero: ...Then I don't need to give you more explanations...!

X: I'll destroy you, whoever you are, and bring back the true Zero!

Wily took over Zero's mind and body.

A thing I'm not sure about is if both serieses being different continuities was always the plan, going by Okohara's comments here it might be:

I don't know if the rest at Capcom felt the same way prior to X4 though. Maybe the Irregular Hunter X series would've been the definite future of the Original series thanks to it being a do over, but who knows.

    4. I feel like that X saying "I can feel something more evil than Sigma inside you" isn't necessarily referring to Wily but moreso the virus inside Zero or maybe Zero's Maverick personality. But either way it's all up to interpretation.

    1. Yep, this means nothing. We did our part and bought the collections, it's Capcom that won't make a new game.

  13. I doubt this sold a million on it's own merits. The game piggybacked off the first collection and there's been so many sales and bundles that people impulse bought it because it was only a few bucks. I bet a big chunk of the sales where people who didn't even play it and just added to their backlog of games they'll never get around to.
