Rockman XZ: Time Rift Approved for Release in China—Has the Game Been Revived?

Alright, bear with us on this one. In 2021, we learned about Rockman XZ: Time Rift, an official mobile action RPG in development at NebulaJoy—the team behind Rockman X DiVE—which was set to cross over the X and Zero series. Shortly after these initial reports, a source indicated the game was cancelled. But, in a surprising twist, it appears not only that the game might have been revived, but it could even be nearing release.

Today, China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) approved 128 individual video games for domestic release, including a "Rockman: Time Rift".

While this news seems promising, it’s possible the approval is based on an application submitted years ago when the game was still in active development but hadn’t yet been cancelled. NPPA policy requires games to be at least 70% complete to be approved, which suggests the game was already quite far along when it was submitted.

But this could also be a positive sign that the game has been revived. With X DiVE finally wrapped up and Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat axed, NebulaJoy’s resources might be fully focused on Time Rift. Unfortunately, this will be one of those "let's wait and see" deals.

If you need a refresher, here’s what the game looked like three years ago based on leaked material. You can watch the concept trailer here.

We'll be keeping a close watch on this one...

  1. The designs are cool so I'd like to be cautiously optimistic about this project, but I'll hold off on judgement until I hear whether they're making this like an actual game (such as X DiVE Offline) or if it's predatory monetization hell (such as the original X DiVE). I'd rather pay an up front cost for a good game than have the whole thing ruined by the free to play model. I want video games, not virtual gacha/slot machines.

    1. I'll take anything I can get
frankly X Dive was great for new artwork and remixes, so if this turns out to be real we can expect more of that at the very least

    2. I doubt it’ll be like Offline at launch. Though if this game eventually gets that treatment, it could be interesting.

    3. 11:30 AM replying to 1:06 PM here, I've always detested the original X DiVE only being good for its assets. Offline is what the game should have been from the start; a game you buy up front for what it's worth with no greedy gacha mechanics designed to make you spend way more money than what the game is worth. As glad as I am that XDO exists to redeem X DiVE however, I really don't want to see them just jump right back into ripping us off with casino mechanics. I can live with spinoff games like Offline to tide us over until the next mainline release, but if it's like the original X DiVE then all the game will really amount to is a virtual gambling scam machine with a Mega Man skin. It's as if the whole industry these days is getting taken over by Las Vegas lately. I don't play video games to gamble my money away, I play them to just have a good fun time and get away from real life's problems for a bit. I refuse to justify that trend with "At least we get some cool art and music out of it".

If they aren't going to give us real games, they should sell the IP to someone who will. SEGA's starting to ramp up the budget for Sonic lately, I'm sure they'd be more than happy to do the same with Mega Man if they could get ahold of the IP. Alternatively, it's pretty obvious that Inti-Creates is still dying to make more Mega Man games. I'm sure they'd be thrilled to get a chance to grab the IP to add to their catalogue of similar titles.

    4. If Inafune's still involved with Inti, I doubt Capcom would want to sell to them. :V

      Delete
    5. Well, I’m glad to see SEGA go from “they should sell their IP!” to “they should have IP sold to them!” Though personally, I don’t know if they’d be the best fit for Mega Man. Nintendo would probably be a better fit, but I would sooner see a Mega Man movie made by Tommy Wiseau than buy a new Nintendo system.

Yeah, Inti would be the best case scenario. And with their ties to Comcept, that’s the best chance to get Inafune back to the series! Huzzah!

    6. If Sega had Mega Man it would be boost to win gameplay with levels that are like race tracks. No thanks.

      Delete
    7. Nintendo would be the absolute worst case scenario, the Mega Man fangame community would get nuked by those overly aggressive Nintendo lawyers.

    8. @8:02 PM "Boost to win" was a myth from the beginning. People have been saying that since Sonic Unleashed and it wasn't true then. The level design in that game is actually quite good. People said it again for Colours and Generations, once again not true. Colours in particular has too many slow platforming sections if anything, but it's generally a good game.

The best case for it you could make is Sonic Frontiers and even then there's only one level you can beat that way, the main problem with the levels in that game was that they were too short and unengaging even despite not being boost to win. Frontiers diverted attention away from the traditional Boost levels and made them side stages while taking away the ability to hurt enemies with Boost, you get hurt instead so you're strongly incentivized to use other strategies, and many of the stages take design from other games like Generations and SA2 so there wouldn't be any Boost to win to begin with.

The most recent game Shadow Generations also isn't Boost to win and actually has the best level design and physics we've had since the original Sonic Generations. When even IGN is rating the game a 9 you know they're doing something right considering IGN are known to be massive Sonic haters with a plainly obvious bias.

SEGA's also known for other series such as Yakuza which are truly fantastic games. They know how to treat the main gameplay in their games right, it's just a matter of how much budget they're throwing at it. The only real gripe I have with SEGA right now is regarding censorship and how they handle DLC.

    9. Selling to Sega is like trading alzheimers for a labotomy.
Take it indie. WayForward or Yacht Club Games. Someone like them who make games FUN.

      Delete
    10. Man selling it to Wayforward and Yacht Club would not me a lobotomy it would be a straight beheading, might as well chop it up to pieces. I don''t even think they have the talent to even illustrate a character right from the series let alone make a game around them that feels authentic.

Sell it to an actual Mega Man team like Inti-Creates, or at least Natsume (since they seem to be active again)... But honestly it is unrealistic to think Capcom will sell one of their most associated with and iconic IPs. I also think Capcom is the best Company to hold the IP to be honest. That said, what they should actually do is license the production of games to external developers like ArcSys with their supervision.

Worst case scenario is Nintendo tho. That's some monkey paw BS except with barely any good prospects.

    11. @9:15 pm, great level design? The boost games all have level design that are built like race tracks with stiff controls. Adventure 1 had way better gameplay than any of the boost games ever will.

      Delete
    12. Something I don't like about Inti's getting the MegaMan IP as their own is the over sexualization of their characters, and not only grown up characters, just the weird fans that like roll will support that kind of stuff. I prefer capcom and Inti keep their differences and distant relations as a thing of the past, if the ZX director can be shared or wants to continue the story in capcom's hands well that woud be great, but I feel capcom should find another company where to make more MegaMan games. Although The Games sure need to have standards of quality and that they need to make more than 1 million to be successful if not MegaMan is going back to Capcom's trash bin for another decade.

      Delete
    13. Man, seeing boost level hounding in regards to *Mega Man* is really funny. Y’all know Mega Man has always been extremely linear, right? MM6 warrior stages are the exception, not the rule.

That said, if you’re gonna go indie, might as well go all the way, like Batterystaple, Domesticated Ant, maybe Adam Kareem if you’re feeling saucy. WayForward in particular is pretty much AA now.

      Delete
    14. @10:56 AM They're not built like race tracks, they're built like platforming stages. Aside from Forces, they all even have multiple different routes you can take to reach the goal, some faster than others. You're not one of those people who bases their entire opinion off what Youtubers have to say without actually playing something for yourself are you?

      Delete
    15. To be fair, you can platform and have multiple branching paths in Mario Kart dating back to 64. I know Nintendo considers Mario Kart to be more of a party game but it is and arcade/kart racing game.

      Delete
    16. Personally I'd love to see another company get a shot at owning the IP just so we could directly compare to how Capcom has managed it over the years.

At least it would be interesting.

    21. Yeah, I don't care about fanservice so long as the character is of age. I would love if Inti would make ZX3 (or ZXC as it was apparently going to be called) at some point but if they start sexualizing ZX characters I just hope they wouldn't go too crazy with it.

    6. Based on some responses, seems many here might have been too young to remember the glory days of MM in the 90s and 2000s (half of the anons here). Damn right MM deserves far better than mobile games and gacha. I'm sick of it and upset at what it has become (recent exception being MM11). And just being happy for what we get only encourages capcom to do even more mobile and gacha. Higher standards would be good (made for the big screen, multi-platform, legit sequel and no gacha, continue the story).

      Delete
    7. Sorry I'm commenting anonymously since I'm out at the moment yeah that's true would only play online on steam with no gatcha so we can just hope and pray for that. That is...if the game gets out of China

You are the only one here with a trash attitude and calling other people's attitude trash because they aren't actively unhappy about something is pure projection. So no, you shut up.

Criticize Capcom or the state of the series all you want, but don't go out of your way to be a jerk to people just because something exists that they might be looking forward to that you aren't.

    5. Mega Man fandom is just trash every time

      Delete
    6. Yeah okay, try to put a negative spin on people not being excited about a mobile game. Most fans want a full on Mega Man game for consoles with no gacha micro transactions, it's not a hard concept to grasp. Well, maybe for you it is.

      Delete
    7. @3:06 pm, if the Mega Man fandom is such trash then why are you here? Doesn't that make you trash as well?

      Delete
    8. You got that right, anon 2:25. That and I just want actual sequels to the main timeline series games and the game play to match, like it was for 2 decades before all this weird low standard stuff. We don't need a hodge-podge of assets from previous games absent in a mobile gacha (gotcha! for those who actually buy it) lacking a legit story mode that seems to be a bunch of mini games and seeing how many points you can rack up. I saw videos of how dive played, and it was lame (even the explosions looked bad, despite nice music and art). It doesn't have the feel of actual sequels. MM11 did it right. More sequel and do it like that.

Same reason I wouldn't be interesting in Megaman soccer, Megaman racing (I never touched those), and to be honest, I never cared to touch Battle Network either. It's too different from MM. If they want to make more of that, fine, but my problem is these days, it has been at the expense of legit games to the main timeline in a sequel MM fashion. Also keep MM an action platformer. No turn based CM setup, and if they do, at least continue normal MM games side by side. Then everyone can be happy.

      Delete
    9. Comparing X DiVE to Battle & Chase is an insult to BnC. And I don’t even hate X DiVE! :p

      Delete
    10. Agreed Jack, Battle & Chase is a pretty good game and not on the level of mediocre mobile games.

      Delete
    11. Well I want Megaman, not a racing game, was my point. A racing game is not Megaman. I can imagine if you replaced the sprites with something else, one likely would not notice the difference. Being a platformer and having a story is a big part of what makes something Megaman. I don't know if that racing game had a story, but a racing game is not Megaman just because they stuff MM characters into it. Like how Mario Kart is not legit Mario because it isn't a platformer. It's too different. Same for Battle Network. I looked at it and was never interested to even try it. Megaman to me is things like MM 1-11, X1 - X8, Zero series, ZX series. I like Legends, though it does deviate a lot, but at least it is a platformer; not turn based, not sports, not mobile gacha (gotcha) gimmicks. I took CM back way back when I bougt it in 2004 because I was annoyed with the turn based crap. It was very annoying being pulled into random turn based battles and luck.

      Delete
    12. @Gary, I can’t take you seriously with that crap take you have about the older spin-offs not being Mega Man games or Mario games. You obviously have never played Battle and Chase or Mario Kart. Just because you have a unhealthy hate for racing games doesn’t mean they were bad. Still leagues better than mobile gacha crap, but you wouldn’t know since you never played them.

      Delete
    13. Sounds like I struck a nerve. First off, I don't care if faceless people on threads like this take me seriously. You don't know me and I don't know you, so let's not pretend to and make false assumptions.

2nd, when did I say it was a bad game? But yeah, I don't care for that genre. Hate is a strong word and gross exaggeration. I said it is not MM because of the genre was all. I never said it was bad at all. I'm neutral on whether it is good or bad. Maybe it is good for a racing game, but that was not my point at all. It isn't Megaman if it doesn't play like a MM game (platformer) was my point. Same reason Super Adventure Rockman did not look appealing when watching a video on how it operated as a game, but the story of Ra Moon being responsible in the MM timeline for human knowledge is interesting.

3rd, I have played Mario Kart from the SNES, one on the N64, and one on the Wii, and yes, it is not legit Mario because it does not play like a Mario game. It isn't a platformer so it doesn't count. Its isn't rocket science to understand what I mean.

4, I can see screens and watch videos to determine if I like or don't like a game. It isn't like tasting food where I have to try it to know it. Before I get a game, I often look at footage of it first these days, might even look at reviews. Way back then, it was from Nintendo power magazines.

I think actual MM games are best...MM1 - 11, MMX-X8, MM Zero series, ZX series. Now that's Megaman. Get what I mean? That's my preference, and we all have our own things we like. I like sticking to MM games that play like MM vs sports based MM games (may as well play a real racing game and on a system with good frame rates).

      Delete
    14. I agree with you Gary. I like both Battle & Chase and Super Adventure Rockman, but I can't really pretend they are as legit as the platformer games. This subject really is the same for every franchise and this is unrelated but I find turn based RPGs to be the most boring genre of them all(in terms of challenge just spam special skills, elementals and/or paralysis or a combination of them and you'll always win and in terms of immersion I want to play as the characters not command them), I just don't see the point.

      Delete
    15. FWIW, BnC does have a story, though nothing extraordinary. The coolest thing in that regard is that every character gets their own ending. Love Napalm Man opening a weapons museum. And as someone who considers “getting boss abilities upon beating the boss” a core part of Mega Man, BnC checks that box.

But yeah, I’m not trying to convince you to play it or anything. And it’s definitely a spinoff through and through. I’m like the Marge meme: “I just think it’s neat!”

      Delete
    16. The only thing that makes Mega Man, Mega Man, is the characters, music, and elements tied to its IP—not the gameplay. Anyone could make a gameplay clone of Mega Man, but it would not be considered Mega Man, and in fact, that happens all the time. But if someone makes a game that plays like Fire Emblem with Mega Man characters and music, they’d get sued for IP infringement because that’s the core of the series.

The idea that gameplay is the most associated aspect of the mainline series is asinine. It’s a ridiculous criterion for judging what is or isn’t Mega Man. If that were true, even minor changes within 2D platforming would have people arbitrarily nitpicking over what qualifies. If it’s too fast, it’s suddenly a Super Mario game; if it has two players, it’s a Contra game; if it’s too slow with short-range attacks, it’s Castlevania. It’s a nebulous standard that people apply based on arbitrary lines they create.

This is why some people pretend that games like X Command Mission or Battle and Chase aren’t “real” Mega Man games, despite them being packed with Mega Man content to the point that it shapes their game design. Thinking you could easily swap in other characters and keep the same feel, charm, or development outcome oversimplifies things. Battle and Chase is distinctly Mega Man, with its characters, visuals, music, themes, story, and continuity. Yet, due to arbitrary standards, people pick and choose what they consider Mega Man (except Legends, because "they like it"), even though the companies making these games don’t follow that criterion. If what they’re saying were true, no TV series, comic, or anything outside gameplay would be “Mega Man.”

And who cares what some people think should or shouldn’t be Mega Man? For every detractor dismissing games that don’t fit their idea of ‘Mega Man,’ there are five fans who consider those very games as, if not more, Mega Man than the so-called “true” games. So these people have no authority on what is or isn’t Mega Man outside of their own minds. And in terms of sales, their opinions don’t stop people from supporting what they enjoy and from expressing it. So these detractors are left pushing a narrative of a fractured fan base that they themselves create and perpetuate by the very nature of their relative standards.

    19. You use terms like "content" and I cant take YOU seriously.
Content is filler. Busy work. Packing peanuts. Often of no quality.

"The only thing that makes Mega Man, Mega Man, is the characters, music, and elements tied to its IP"

1 and 2 are bogus. 3 is the only one that works.

Battle Network. Mega Man in name only. Always has been. Always will be. Should have been its own IP. Who knows how it would have done had it not leached the name?
Capcom doesnt do this shit with their big hit IP. Just this one. Its so irritating. Ryu is Ryu in every game he appears even if he is dropping gems.
You can call those spinoffs Mega Man all you like. It still bifricated the fandom and despite all the glorious "sales" STILL killed the series for nearly a decade. And a half.
All the consuming in the world cant undo that unnecessary damage.
Star Force made it way worse. And Legends might as well not even bothered, for all its "success".

At least battle and chase, etc, are the same cast. Thats how Mario does it. And which IP is getting a theme park?

      "You use terms like "content""

Yeah because content means everything within something else, what a dip. And who gives a crud about what you take seriously? You're like the bottom of the barrel when it comes to people I want approval from. Characters and music don't make Mega Man, Mega Man? It's bogus? Go ahead and try to use Mega Man characters and music in whatever gaming/ media project you're working on and sell it. See how well that turns out for you.

Blablabla, do you think you're the one who decides if Battle Network is Mega Man in name only? You're a ridiculous person with irrational arguments. I consider Battle Network the epitome of Mega Man and there's nothing you can do about it. You can only dictate yourself.

"Capcom doesnt do this shit with their big hit IP. Just this one. Its so irritating."

No one cares if you're irritated man, get that through your head. Capcom doesn't need to do anything according to anything you specifically require. Ryu comes from a game with 8 billion nearly identical imitators. Then he crosses over with those imitators and becomes a Power Ranger, a Robot and a fashionista... like get over yourself. On top of that Capcom does this kind of stuff with Monster Hunter (change gameplay, aesthetics character design etc in spin-off games), GnG, Breath of Fire(within even the main series), Onimusha, Sengoku Basara... I mean the list goes on and on...

Also who the heck says they have to treat every series the same? Because if it's you, then next please.

"You can call those spinoffs Mega Man all you like. It still bifricated the fandom and despite all the glorious "sales" STILL killed the series for nearly a decade."

Oh yeah... Because the series was doing real great by the time of X5, all 10,000 Mega Man Legends sales of which 100 became fans "supporting" it and bringing it to prominence. /S Also Mega Man 11 is about to be 6 years old and counting. Since it just so happens to be the only real game to release in a while and just so happens to be the best selling one. I sure do hope your simplistic logic doesn't make you look like a dip.

By the way if Mega Man came back tomorrow with Battle Network, I would buy the living crap out of it just like I did the collection. I'd be talking about how Mega Man is back! And there's nothing you can do about it... Except maybe complain and cry in a "corner" influencing very little, the types of people who are already like you and have your mindset for example. The only difference is, unlike you, if a Mega Man classic game that was a 2D side scroller released at the same time or at any time. Instead of complaining about it, if I didn't like it, I'd just ignore it and not support it. Or I would support it and just enjoy both.

I agree with you about Battle and Chase though. You know what they say about broken clocks.

      X5 - 201,153
      MML1 - 150,238
      MML2 - 88,131

      Legends 2 - 243,711(Japan & USA combined)
      Battle Network - 208,640(Japan & USA combined)
And when combined with the American N64 sales the original Legends sold more than X5:
      Legends - 599,960(Japan, USA PSX & USA N64), 472,472(Japan & USA PSX ONLY)
      X5 - 504,515(Japan & USA)

    29. It has been speculated before that VGChartz could be missing 3,000-10,000 units in some of their charts which in this case it could be either the American or European or other regions numbers, but even if this was true taking into consideration all the regions except for possibly the Japanese numbers, more on that later, and adding the biggest possible number of 10,000 for possible uncounted units it would make the total 430,000 units still lagging behind the first Legends game with 599,960 units sold with N64 included or 472,472 with only PlayStation. The approximate Japanese numbers of 220,000 there match Dengeki's, so for this particular case it isn't that inaccurate, of course, assuming Dengeki's numbers are legit.

    37. I do think Legends needs a serious graphical overhaul at this point. Even when I first played it in 2000, it felt dated, and the PSX does better with sprites than models with very low res textures. The N64 version I once owned thinking it would be different vs a port (I owned the PSX version first) was bad though with bilinear filtering and muffled sound quality. PSX version was much better. I did see some fans working on a high detailed remake, but I doubt that will ever be done and released.

This anon is confusing copyright and the characteristics of a franchise like messages, themes, character archetypes, worldview, tone, rules. Writes that the idea of gameplay being the most associated aspect of the "mainline" series is "asinine", but doesn't explain why. It just is and then proceeds to make up ridiculous examples in typical bad faith fashion. When has anyone said if a game is too fast it is like Mario or that Mario is a fast game at all? Seriously? And anyway, if people find gameplay the most associated aspect of the series then that's the most associated aspect of the series.

Something as broad as "content" being what makes something Mega Man or not is what's foolish. By this arbitrary standard, the crazy Brazilian comic is Mega Man then even though it features Mega Man and Mega Man X both active at the same time acting completely out of character and packaged with some of the most bizarre stories. All it shares with the franchise is that it has the copyright, that's it.

"If what they’re saying were true, no TV series, comic, or anything outside gameplay would be 'Mega Man.'"
Are you for real? A TV series can't have gameplay. What are you even stating? All other media is considered second tier to the games anyway even by Capcom when they blatantly contradict something stated in other media so this ludicrous comment didn't even need to be made. This is genuinely funny.

"And who cares what some people think should or shouldn’t be Mega Man?"
YOU, you have been discussing this in multiple articles. An awful lot of work for somebody that "doesn't care."

"And in terms of sales, their opinions don’t stop people from supporting what they enjoy and from expressing it."
Nobody is saying the contrary, you are the only one that's trying to make this a thing.

"So these detractors are left pushing a narrative of a fractured fan base"
There's already fragmentation between any two games already like those that prefer Mega Man 2 and dislike Mega Man 3 or vice versa. It's just that it's more noticeable between Battle Network and the rest which was completely avoidable.

"Then he crosses over with those imitators and becomes a Power Ranger, a Robot and a fashionista..."
You're seriously comparing crossovers with legit entries? Majority of videogame crossovers are on the level of parodies, it's why events relating to them are never mentioned again except sometimes for a joke, and at most in crossovers of other media like between comics would events relating to said other media crossovers be considered legit. This is why all rules go out the window, abilities and power levels heavily modified, characters acting out of character, situations that are straight up impossible to happen, etc.

"By the way if Mega Man came back tomorrow with Battle Network, I would buy the living crap out of it just like I did the collection."
      Good for you.

"I'd be talking about how Mega Man is back!"
How come Mega Man be back if almost every day there's new content?
      Day 1: Plushies.
      "Mega Man is back!"
      Day 2: Nothing.
      Day 3: Cards.
      "Mega Man is back!"

"Instead of complaining about it, if I didn't like it, I'd just ignore it and not support it."
That's a bald-faced lie, you throw Legends under the bus every chance you get and even in this comment downplayed the sales which you were proved objectively wrong about and mocked the amount of fans.

I just noticed you changed your argument from last time. Previously you were saying that one of the things that makes a game Mega Man is the weapon absorption mechanic which you never do that in Command Mission(and neither in Battle Network nor Battle and chase). Cool attempt at sweeping that under the rug like nobody would notice. In Battle Network the one that gets the chip is Lan not Hub, Hub can't use it without Lan providing it so it isn't the same. In Battle and Chase you take out car parts and based on the dialogue the opponent shouldn't have that part anymore, but the developers didn't bother with that so again no absorption mechanic.

    2. While I’m inclined to agree, it’s not like this is something that would, well, *ever* happen in a main game. Even when the series was healthy and steady, when there were people involved who gave a damn about story, the closest we’ve gotten to a square crossover is BN meets Star Force ft. Time Travel. Inafune has gone on record as not really wanting to make those kinda stories, at least for 20XX to X. You might as well let the Chinese app devs go nuts, Capcom sure as hell won’t.

Besides, it’ll probably just be more time travel shenanigans. Literally has “Time Rift” in the title.

    8. @Jark Spore
After reading it, Inafune misunderstood what the question was or didn't want to give a straight answer. He thought that TMMN were saying that fans wanted him to make a game where you play as characters from different serieses hence the weird mention of a crossover: "Even if I stayed at Capcom, I would not have pursued such a crossover where you would play as X characters in a Classic series or vice versa." Which wasn't what was being asked, but rather if all the connective plot points would be tied up(they didn't say it exactly like that, but if there was a plan to link them more explicitly) like when does Rock retire? When exactly did Dr. Right start to develop X? What happened to the rest of the cast? Et cetera.

      Delete
    9. Fair enough. After all, it’s two questions answered, maybe the other question not stated is more about explicit crossovers. That said, I think the response would be similar to making a game answering those questions you stated. The closest 20XX got to a proper ending was MM6, I don’t think he’d wanna go more explicit and heavy than that game’s tone. He’s also said that he didn’t like the tone of SAR, which would be kinda needed for a game about Mega Man basically dying. And of course X got a proper ending with X5, which Capcom impolitely denied.

And regardless of what question was asked of Inafune, he still said he didn’t want self-crossovers, which is the actual topic here.

      Delete
    10. Err, no. I never wrote that Rock had to die and was more tending towards him no longer being a guardian of peace and happiness due to either there being no more threats or he's too obsolete with him either deactivating himself or living a normal life.

      Delete
    11. I disagree, Inafune never addressed the question properly. X would still be under development by the time Mega Man retires or is destroyed. There would be no playable X, but X3 does mention X having memories of Zero pre-X1 so his state is unknown so he could have been unfinished but temporarily activated and maybe just talked with Dr. Right to know Zero's background without ever meeting him.
