Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics Now Available

They said it couldn’t be done, but here we are. The digital version of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is out today for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC (with an Xbox release planned for 2025). The physical version is set to release on November 22nd.

This collection brings together seven of Capcom's classic Marvel arcade titles, including the original Marvel vs. Capcom and Marvel vs. Capcom 2—a particular highlight for Mega Man fans. Both games feature familiar faces like the blue bomber, Roll, Tron Bonne, and her army of Servbots.

The collection features an extensive art gallery with several Mega Man-related pieces, including never-before-seen drafts of special moves and combos. For example, the Rush Drill was originally designed as an underground digging move. There's also an early concept for Hyper Mega Man that predates the Mazinger-inspired version we’ve come to know and love.

If you grew up playing these games in the arcade, this collection offers a great shot of nostalgia. And if you’re new to the series, it’s an easy way to dive in, with online play (rollback included), modern display options, and simplified combos for beginners.

Whether you're revisiting old memories or exploring for the first time, it's worth a look.

  1. I forgot that this was coming out, but it's pretty cool release.

  2. Personally, I'm holding out for the physical release. It's kinda of lame that Capcom are spacing it so far apart from the digital.

    1. Hope you don't live in Europe and want the Switch version because that's been confirmed to be a code in a box release.

    2. @4:18 am, I don't live in Europe but I heard about the code in a box for switch for them. That is a complete bs move by Capcom and I feel bad for the euro fans. I'm probably grabbing it for ps4 since that's where I have most of my fighters and retro arcade games.

  3. If I remember correctly Mega Man, upon defeating Onslaught, is able to use one of Onslaught's attacks, but I forget if it's actually usable in the arcade version or if it's only on old console ports.

    2. Buy this collection and perhaps MVC 4 with another Mega Man character will appear. That is the point. Also this one is legal too with Phys edition, with rollback netcode. Ofc if this is not what you want you can skip it.

Buy used, if you must. I am not funding Disney if I have a choice.

I'll stick to my PS3 copies.

    5. @1:39 am, please don't tell me you honestly believe it when Capcom says if so and so collection sells well they will make a new game. They have used this scummy tactic so much in the past just to gain sales with no intentions of making a new game.

    6. SF2:HF 360 = SFIV
      REmake HD = REmake 2
      DMC HD and 4SE = DMC5
      MvC2 HD = MvC3
      MML1 and MML2 = MM11

There's definitely a precedent of side projects fueling or green lighting new projects. The only time that hasn't been honored was with Darkstalkers, but according to Sven, Dark Resurrection flopped.

I understand that 11 came out in 2018, over 5 years ago, but Capcom has multiple projects in the pipeline. They all can't be Mega Man.

    9. The sales of Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting are unrelated with the release of Street Fighter IV. Street Fighter IV was greenlit in 2005:
Determined to restore the SF dynasty to its rightful place atop the fighting-game pantheon, Ono was finally able to persuade his boss, Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune, to green-light the project in 2005. - Electronic Gaming Monthly Issue 224 (January 2008), page 64.

      Ono Yoshinori only said this:
"If you look at Street Fighter II': Hyper Fighting on XBLA, it might not be the highest-quality product, but the fact that it sold so well despite that proves that a lot of people are still really into this series,” - Ibid 63
All the sales did was inspire Yoshinori more, but the project was already approved. Comparing release dates, it makes more sense for development to take 3 years since 2005 rather than 2 since 2006:
SF II': HF XBL - 08/02/2006
      SF IV - 07/18/2008

    10. "REmake HD = REmake 2"
While the Resident Evil Wiki tells of the following:
As a result of the title's success, a subsequent remaster of Resident Evil 0 was announced, as well as a remake of Resident Evil 2, the latter of which released to widespread critical and financial acclaim in early 2019.
There are no sources that the sales of the HD remaster of the remake of Resident Evil led to the approval of the remake of Resident Evil 2.

Brett Brelston, ex-employee of Capcom, wrote in his Capcom-Unity blog on April 24 of 2015 that the remaster surpassed one million sales worldwide. A month later on May 26 of 2015, a video is uploaded to Youtube announcing both that the remaster has been enjoyed by one million out there and that they have a new project in the works, a remaster of Resident Evil 0 implying that it was thanks to the sales of the original game's remaster. On August 12 of 2015, another video uploaded to Youtube has Hirabayashi Yoshiaki, a Producer from Capcom R&D Division 1, announcing that the Resident Evil 2 Remake project has been approved for development, but with no mention of any relation to the sales of Resident Evil HD Remaster. You won't find any sources from Capcom itself making any statement regarding the relation between the sales of Resident Evil HD Remaster and the approval of Resident Evil 2 Remake(which technically the final version isn't a remake, but its own thing entirely). There could've been some relation, but trying to pass it off as objective truth is irresponsible.

    11. "DMC HD and 4SE = DMC5"
It's funny how even the Wikipedia article echoes this fallacy, but the source itself tells the opposite:
"-Something I read, and I wanted to confirm with you, is there a survey within the game for fans, which will help determine the future of the franchise?"

"-I think it's a bit of a misunderstanding. At the time of Devil May Cry 4, I spoke to an interviewer in Japan and I had given a message to the fans at the end of the interview saying "Let us know what you want to see in the future of DMC." I spoke to the same guy this time around for the special edition and I kind of just made an off-the-cuff comment along the lines of, "We're always listening to your feedback, please buy the special edition." So I think the fans with internet have taken that there is a literal survey somewhere with check boxes that will feed into a future game, but it was just a general comment on my part saying that Capcom values fan feedback."

"-Because that headline read as the future of the franchise is dependent on this, and that's not the case, is that correct?"

"-No, I have never said anything along the lines of holding anything in the future hostage to sales of this title."

    12. "MvC2 HD = MvC3"
No idea where that even came from. The available sources say nothing like it:
For 10 years, fans have waited for a sequel to Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, a 3-on-3 fighter that continues to draw large crowds at fighting game tournaments. But because Capcom couldn't retain the Marvel license (due to legal conflicts over copyrights), the series was placed on hiatus. Capcom, though, managed to score back the license, and has been developing MvC3 for quite some time. "We started working on [MvsC3] midsummer 2008 -- it's been a while," says producer Ryota Niitsuma, whose recent work includes Tatsunoko vs. Capcom -- which happens to be a 2-on-2 fighter starring characters from Capcom and Tatsunoko (a Japanese animation house). "As for contract and legal issues, we started way before then."

That isn't completely true but it isn't completely false either. It was implied that the sales of Legacy 1 showcased that there were significant numbers of fans that led to the greenlight of 11. By the time of Legacy 2, the project was already obviously approved due to the 11 concept art included in the gallery:
“What was really nice was, when we released Mega Man Legacy Collection, it did really well,” Tsuchiya told me. “It had 1 million sales worldwide. It was very much a way of numerically showcasing, to people internally, that there is a strong fan base. There are people waiting for a new Mega Man game. We were able to show that with those numbers. We wouldn’t have been able to do that without our fans. I’m very thankful to our fan base.”

    15. Those who said emulator? Please don't be proud and saying aloud about pirating something. You guys are the reason why emu got shot down one by one. And saying BS about sales of collection dont affect new game... total sales allow Capcom to gauge what the demand for the titles. Each company always try to play safe. More sales, easier green light from higher ups. Information is the key, just demanding but not buying any? That is what company want to avoid. Company might be greedy but they also have a bit of logic about business. If the survey do not match the sales pretty much bye bye, dead franchise.

    16. Buying used doesn't give a company sales, either. Getting mad at people for using emulators and not accepting it's just a risk a developer team takes when making it is stupid.

  5. As a note, Capcom Fighting Collection 2 doesn't contain any direct Mega Man references, as SvC Chaos ended up released on its own instead.
