Review: Kotobukiya Mega Man X Falcon Armor

Kotobukiya's Mega Man X line takes flight with the Falcon Armor from Mega Man X5 and Mega Man X6! This highly anticipated release completes the main armor sets from the first six Mega Man X games, and that's an incredible accomplishment. Was this kit worth the wait? Does it deserve a spot in your collection? Stick around after the break as we dive deep into the Falcon Armor!

Review sample provided by HobbyLink Japan. Go check 'em out!

Falcon Armor, complete!

The Falcon Armor has always been a fan-favorite armor, and for good reason. In Mega Man X5, it unlocked movement options we had never dreamed about! Not only was it useful, but the design for it is absolutely worth the hype. As usual, Kotobukiya has done the design justice; this kit looks like it flew straight out of the artwork! When assembled straight out of the box with no paint or touch-ups, it is a near-perfect representation of X's Falcon Armor!

While there are a few small details that need a touch of paint to be completely accurate, that doesn't detract from the fun this kit provides. I would also call this a more advanced build, so be sure to take your time when building.

A look at both sides.

Much like the previous kits in this line, the Falcon Armor is completely compatible with every other X kit. Now you can show X getting one piece of the armor at a time, even if Dr. Light told you not to! Use your sense & skill to create the perfect look!

Ready for action!

The usual accessories are included: a stern face, a teeth-gritted face, and a shouting face (all forward-facing), a Buster, and the usual assortment of hands with included Saber-holding hands (Z-Saber not included). There is also a set of alternate green gems for the wrists that are shaped slightly different, allowing for a greater range of motion with the hands. These options will allow you to re-create almost any situation you can think of!

Accessorize!

While this kit does include the usual range of motion, I have to bring up my only real negative: when posing this kit, you need to be extra careful. With so many parts that hang off the design, such as the green and red gems or the "talons" on the legs, it may be a bit too easy to knock a part loose by mistake if you grab it wrong, so be sure to take your time when handling the kit. The Falcon Armor is very ornate, so this issue was bound to happen when brought into a real-world situation. For what it's worth, I haven't personally had anything like that happen to me while handling the kit, but I could see it being a potential issue to watch out for.

READY

And that about does it for Kotobukiya's Falcon Armor. It's an excellent addition to the line that really rounds out the current releases. I never thought I'd see the day where every main armor from the first six Mega Man X games were represented so faithfully in a single product line.

But that begs the question: what's next? Would you prefer finishing X5 and X6 with the Gaea and Shadow Armors? Is it time to do the Glide Armor to go with the upcoming Axl kit? Or should Kotobukiya finally tackle the most anticipated of them all, the Ultimate Armor? What's next for Kotobukiya's Mega Man X line? Only time will tell, so keep on the lookout for any upcoming news.

  2. I took a break from Koto kits after Hyper Max, awesome as they are, but I would buy Shadow and Gaea Armor instantly. I have neen trying to find all the pieces from the old 1993 Rockman Armor kits, but not having much luck.

I would be a happy person if they made Shadow Armor!

    1. There were no X armor kits in 1993.

  3. Hopefully BBTS gets their stock in, soon.

If you dont have one, get one of those display bases. For this kit at least. They certainly help keep Zero standing with those wonky ankles. If you wanna do any flight poses you will need it.

    2. Do you still have the 3d print files you made a while back that fix the Zero ankle issues Shrap?

    4. random question but do you have the boxes to the mega armor falcon and fouth you could possibly scan or would sell?

    5. Maybe... I have some but I wont sell them.
Why do you need a scan? To reproduce them?

    6. I do have those boxes for the regular versions only. They are not pristine. I can try scanning it. I have an old scanner tho. I'll see what I can do.

    7. Here are scans. For what they are worth. Not very good ones. But if your artistically talented one can take out the faults and rebuild it.

    8. I was looking for a scan to get a set printed out so I can fix my Zero, his ankles drive me nuts.

    9. Yeah, i wanna reproduce them because i don’t have the boxes. If you have the instructions and unused sticker sheets id love a scan of those as well if possible. I like having the boxes. If you ever do sell the boxes id give you lioe $100 each tbh

    10. If you decide to take apart Zero's feet.... Be extremely careful. I mean extremely. They are not meant to be taken apart. You need to make very small very safe moves to keep it from snapping and causing the plastic to stretch. I really don't recommend it.

What I really need to do, or anyone else who is interested, is work up something like this... https://imgur.com/a/IhFJbP9
It wouldn't be hard to model up. I am not sure it would work though with the same grip... It could snap in by clipping on to the edges of the foot gem. But it would be ideal for repairing Zero without the need for surgery.

I'm not sure I could print it out of PLA on my machine, though... It would be tricky.

    12. I saw. I mentioned I'm not selling them.
I scanned the manuals for you. I don't have the decals. I used them back in the day before discarding them for paint.

    14. dude thank you so much for those scans <3

in the future if its ever possible to 3d scan the falcon ears and the fourth's forehead gem and ears i would gladly pay ya. i have some extra ones missing those parts, id love to replace the parts eventually. sucks idiots scalp and inflate the market on these.

    15. I'll take a look... If they aren't glued in (which I think they are) I'll mock something up real quick and put it on Thingiverse. But I am pretty sure my parts are glued which will make it difficult but not impossible.
The nice thing about Thingiverse is parts can be published as works in progress. If something needs tweaking, people can provide feedback for correction or just fix it and repost it themselves.

    16. Should be able to model up those pieces. I just finished drawing the Falcon Armor ear. I want to print it out to see if it's right, so I'll probably do that tomorrow. The other parts will be easy to do to.

    17. The Falcon Ears are done.

I'll do the X4 Armor parts this weekend. It's a motivation issue. But I'll do it, eventually.

  4. For stuff that hangers off like that, you can use plastic cement to permanently glue those bits to the armor so you don't have to worry about them coming off.

The only issue then is you have to be careful not to break it!

  5. I can't wait to see what armor they do next. I can see potentially the next one being:
    Glide armor
    Ultimate armor
    Gaea armor
    Shadow Armor

would be neat if they made the maverick hunter X armor or X8 style X, but I don't see either of those happening anytime soon. I'd expect command mission X before either of those. heck, even the weird X dive variations before those.

my money is on ultimate armor next, since they could easily milk that with variations

    1. I would buy a Ultimate Armor any day, kinda skipped the 4th armor since I’m holding out hope for ultimate next. I honestly hope they do all of the main armors, I’d love to have a updated version of the Gaea and Shadow.

    2. Gaea would be my fave, but I don't know how much hope I have for it. you can't even make variations, unless they go with a matte one and a shiney version. no weapons allowed for those armors.

with ultimate, they already have the X4,X5, and X6 variations to work with, along with the white X challenge variation, and they can even do a rising flame variant to go with the X4 variant's weapon. ultimate armor can easily have 5 or 6 variation using the same molds, which is why I think it's super likely.

    3. 4th and White Ultimate. Yes, please and thank you.

    4. I prefer the X6 ultimate armor personally. though honestly, I'd definitely get them all. just have to figure out how to organize them with the other armors. where would white ultimate even go?

      Delete
    5. I'd take any of them, too. That one would be my 3rd choice.

      Delete
    6. I wonder if we haven't gotten ultimate armor yet because they're coming up with a way to transform it into the rideable board thing.

      Delete
    7. They'd have to make it a separate build, sorta. The Mega Armors did it by making the feet parts removable, but in practical terms it looks bad. the rest of it is easy. If they wanted that, it's better as an accessory.

  6. Does anyone else notice that compared to the original falcon armor artwork, that the lower legs are sculpted wrong? In the artwork and sprites he doesn’t have the wings sticking out of the side of his legs, they sit flush with the leg armor and wrap around the side.

  7. I wonder what alt version we'll get to get the falcon armor charge shot? maybe an X6 damaged varient that also comes with a Z saber?

    1. I don't see kotobukiya putting that much effort into a charge shot version, will most likely just be a color variant.
