Mega Man X2's Planner Shares Original "Green Biker Dude" Scene Design Notes

He made only a brief appearance, but Mega Man X2's "Green Biker Dude," as fans fondly call him, is an icon. Blink and you'll miss him— that split-second wheelie at the game's start left a lasting impression. For over 30 years, this enigmatic Reploid has inspired endless parodies, memes, art, and even fan-games. Yet, amid all the hype, one question lingers: What is his real name?

When Mega Man X2 planner Yoshihisa Tsuda began sharing more about X2's development on Twitter, I took the opportunity to ask him about it. While Tsuda confirmed that nothing concrete was ever conceived during the game's development, he did share something equally intriguing: the original design notes for the Green Biker Dude scene and a little background behind its development.

The note reads:

<<Rockman X appears>>

X returns on the Air Bike. He races through a rain of lasers. In the distance, a fellow Air Bike appears alongside X.

<<A friend is shot>>

One of the laser hits the companion's Air Bike. At that moment, X looks back.

Tsuda also clarified that Green Biker Dude wasn't just a friend, but a fellow Hunter in X's unit.

Here's Tsuda's comment on drafting the scene:

"During the development of Mega Man X2, Director Fujiwara once told me, 'listen, planners, if you think of ideas 24/7 and write them down when you come to the office, that will be great.' So, I sincerely did that for a time.

While working at Capcom, my commute took a little over two hours one way. An hour and a half of that train ride I used to brainstorm. (I also slept a lot.) Fortunately, since my station was the starting point of the Hanwa Line, I always managed to secure a seat. Maybe I was just that lucky? Anyway, it turns out those train rides were perfect to come up with ideas. Most of the ideas I came up with for X2 originated from notes made during that commute.

By the way, because I was a mid-career hire, I couldn't live in Capcom's dorms and there was an age limit for housing allowances. However, they did cover commuting expenses. I would leave home at 6:30 in the morning and return around 1:00 AM, commuting like this for about a year and a half. Despite the challenging hours, I didn't find it too burdensome because it was enjoyable to be involved with the production of X2. Well then, I'm starting to sound like a corporate drone, so I'll stop here for now."

It's worth pointing out that despite Green Biker Dude lacking an official name, Tsuda drew comparisons between the character's death and that of Hayao Kakizaki from Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?, who died in a similar fashion. This was not Tsuda's intention when drafting the scene, but both characters garnered a similar lasting following.

And with that, dear friends, we conclude. Though nameless he may be, Green Biker Dude's legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire fans for years to come. And who knows? Perhaps we'll encounter him again one day, in some shape or form.

  1. Maybe a new mega man x game might have him in it.

    1. Maverick Hunter X2, there's definitely 'a chance'

    2. I'd rather they do sequels vs tap dancing around that with failed remakes. Else they can do them side be side. Also this was a nice fan made MHX2 theme (others are on youtube too): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyEKoAVox2o

  2. There's something poetic about him not having a name; the nameless hero charging bravely into battle alongside X, prepared to give his very life for their shared dream and ultimately ending up doing just that. And yet, he is not forgotten, but leaves a lasting impression that inspires others to turn that dream into reality. Though nobody knows his name, what he did will never be forgotten.

  3. Not sure if the correct video for the death of Kakizaki was linked; I think you may have confused his death in the series for his death in the movie. In the series, he was consumed by an explosion behind him, while in the movie, he was shot at in the front by an approaching enemy. Here's the scene where it happened @ the 37 second mark: https://youtu.be/UNeB8ULBX9Y&t=37

    1. In case anyone else can't tell what happened due to the video's low quality, here's the same scene remastered in Hi-Def: https://youtu.be/d1MlXmNSL7s&t=30

    2. It's a shame that even though most of Macross has been freed from licensing purgatory, DYRL is still trapped. Or so they say...

  4. Hurray! My theory that Axl is Green Biker Dude hasn’t been debunked!

    1. Green Biker Dude dies in the X2 opening, and this takes place way before Axl would have been created, as Axl is a prototype of the next generation Reploids.

Forget Green Biker Dude, this is the real news. Also didn't know Capcom had dorms? Absolute insanity. Are you even getting enough sleep to do good work at that point?

    1. Japan's got a killer work culture with regards to hours, unfortunately. Can't say anything about the dorms, though.

  6. It's interesting that the scene describes X looking back. Part of the GBD meme is how indifferent X sounded about his death at the beginning of X2.

  7. Considering the situation X and hunters are in throughout the series, getting to close and friendly to the hunters only means more pain as each one is killed. Not sure why reploid resurrection is often illegal, yet at the same time, many exceptions for their resurrection are made (many are done illegally by villains though), but heaven forbid if society decides to resurrect Iris or some lost friends of X who are valued members of society. No issue with Cain helping Zero be revived though, even though Serges / Wily did most of it, Cain assembled the captured parts after the parts were rebuilt. I guess resurrection is legal if they are a truly valued and irreplaceable asset to society, So X and Zero would get a free pass if they knew how to analyze them and resurrect them without Wily's or Light's help.

  8. Quick, someone ask him about the female Counter Hunter. For those that are wondering, he still doesn't remember why he put the broken capsule in Counter Hunter HQ 4.

    1. Yeah, someone should ask him about the female Counter Hunter!
Though, really? Not even he remembers what that capsule was for? That's incredible, an eternal mystery.

    2. Stuff like this is why I want an X2 remake. I love the idea of just expanding on the games and the world, similar to how Megamission and the mangas did.

  9. Was there ever any official artwork of the green biker dude?
