We will be back in early February if the new supplemental cards brings more Mega Man X goodness!
I hate, HATE Mega Man's represention in Teppen. That said they did a good job depicting Sigma and most antagonists (cause they don't radically change their design or embarrass their character). There are positives here and there but kink maid Cinnamon, and those absolutely trash redesigns of X and Zero aren't some of them. The art is so high quality and good too... What a shame.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Not that I am in any rush to play any mobile games. But those designs are redonkulous. There is no reason or excuse for them, when they didn't redesign any OTHER characters from the other series. It's more proof, not that I needed any, that Capcom doesn't have a clue.
DeleteYeah they definitely butchered X.
Delete"His desperate cries were drowned out by the enemy's continued attack. And yet he could not fight back...for he had identified his foe as human."
"He must never harm human beings. This fundamental law suppressed his ability to fight back, even as he was severely damaged and brought to the point of collapse. There was nothing he could do against his foe."
Fundamental law of what? Complete and utter free will? It's almost like these people have no idea who X is at all. You know the character who's entire premise revolves around the ability to think and act without any manufactured restriction. Yeah I am guessing they almost don't.
Funny you say all that, I'm not gonna defend the redesigns themselves, but the fact you yourself don't understand that harming a human in Megaman X gets you labeled as a fucking Maverick(or Irregular, if you're of Rockman X mind). Just because he can think for himself, doesn't mean he's not abiding by certain laws or principles. Also, I haven't commented on anything on this blog for a while but jeez louise you made me break my silence and go all nerd on you. Good job.
Delete@Lord Forte
DeleteThese aren't humans, though. They're robotic doppelgangers aligned with Sigma. The flavor text in question is basically saying that X's inability to fight back against evil robot clones is a technicality resulting from an Asimov's Law-type restriction where his programming flat-out does not allow him to defend himself Robocop-style if a human is attacking him. That is actively contradictory to the entire premise of Mega Man X's existence.
@TAG Cammy and the others aligned with Sigma are nano-machine projected "mirage soldiers", so they're not human, but they're pretty close to it. Close enough to be identified as such at least.
DeleteThere's other text in the game that clearly show X can think for himself, but it doesn't mean he's not sometimes conflicted with killing an enemy, especially if they appear to be human.
I don't mind the X/Zero redesign in Teppen too much. It's awkward at some angles, but it works out from others. Though it is odd when the others aren't redesigned like that so I get people calling it weird. Definitely fair, but it's not the worst thing in the world. But hey, everything else they've done with him and the series in the game is pretty great imo. Kinda gave more life to characters while abiding to their history and details in the canon games. Alia and them.
And maid cinnamon with kitty gloves was always a thing. They even got the blue color of the arm part of the gloves.
@Lord Forte: OK now I gotta get nerdy on you. Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think it ever states that the simple fact of a Reploid harming a human in the X universe will get it labled a maverick. As a matter of fact I don't even think KILLING a human was ever said to do so. You are going to have to cite your source for that claim.
DeleteThat said, even if that were true, that is not a fundimental law forbidding X from fighting back, that would be X's principled character, X is not infallible he thinks and acts like a human would. This is factually stated by Dr Light himself when he verbatim said "you truely are like us humans X" to which light and X begin an exchange about free will and ethics and how X could be viewed as dangerous because of him possessing these traits. Light then assures X that his "conscience" will allow him to carry out the hope and justice he opts to fight for.
Now if in the X universe he would be labeled as maverick if he harmed a human, CLEARY that wouldn't matter to him since the label maverick predates his creation, character, and principled outlook by a century.
TLDR: If Cammy White is killing a bunch of innocent people, X is fully within his ability AND character to fight agaisnt her. Since from the outset it was made clear he has free will and holds an allegiance to hope and justice NOT arbitrary laws.
On top of this, X can stop humans in many ways without harming them, or sitting there racking up physical abuse from them to the point of collapse like a big incompetent dummy.
@DeepSigh
DeleteIf they are nanomachine doppelgangers, they are not human. Full stop. They are plain old robots designed to be evil. Asimov's Laws should not apply here. This isn't X having moral/ethical conflicts. The game is straight-up saying that X is fundamentally incapable of fighting blatantly evil rovot clones because they look like real humans. That goes beyond contradictory and is full-on asinine.
Mavericks (and the label) didnt come into play until X woke. Not before his creation.
Delete@DeepSign: I never said Teppen made up kink maid Cinnamon. I was suggesting that it wasn't my prefered way of representing the series. Kinda like white day Alia or if they would have put a wedding dress on Layer or something. Yeah they didn't invent it, but the origin series has distasteful stuff in there too. I am not about to choose that stuff in specific to promote. It's like if they used X's X4 english dub in Teppen, yeah they didn't invent the voice but it would suck that they chose that one if they did for him.
Delete@Shrap: That was an error I meant "postdates his creation"
DeleteWhat a lot of you guys don't seem to realize is that this X is a VASTLY ALTERNATE TIMELINE than the one we are used to. This X is considered an artifact of a lost civilization (think the Mu continent in star force) that seems to operate under very different rules, hence the redesign and questionable Canon (Sigmas rebellion is just starting but Axl, Alia, Iris, Zero and a bunch of others have just been around already.) Heck earlier cards with Sigma in it has had him cooperative and benevolent. It's a weird alt timeline here where X is designed specifically to protect humans (his very first story mission has him unsure if he should even fight Wesker after having witnessed Wesker just put his arm thru Spencer's chest) and that he's lost enough of his memory that only core ideals remained. That or he's one of those purifiers made to protect humans like what leads into the Legends series. Who knows. All I do know is that the canon does not line up with what we know.
DeleteThat all said I also actually quite enjoy the redesign of X here. It's a different take that's more feminine, more overtly angelic (Cyber elf X incorporated into the redesign?), and a more Android esque look. Only real problem is, because of how many different artists there are, some cards don't capture his look well. Google Advanced Artifact X to see how dope he looks in motion in one of the early cards.
@DarkDreamTCK I'm glad you like it. That's fine. To each their own.
DeleteBUT It doesn't matter if it's an alternate timeline. Let's pose a question: What is the purpose of Teppen? Why do they keep insisting on doing crossovers? The answer: To make money, build brand awareness to potential new customers, and hopefully make more money, yes?
So, WHAT THE BLOODY HELL is the point of introducing new customers to a brand and characters that does not represent what they were sold? This happens with Rockman again, and again, and again, and again.
Just saying (this will probably be my last comment on this thread) I was never confused about Teppen not adhereing to any semblence of MMX canon, that part is clear. What I was doing this whole time was expressing my opinion of Teppen not adhereing to any semblence of MMX canon (at least in regards to X, and to a lesser extent Zero).
DeleteYou can have "takes" on X and his universe of characters, although I don't know why you would if you are going to fundimentally change the character just make another one. You maybe like a highly feminine looking X, with an ancient Aztec voodoo origin, that can't properly function when confronted with a human doing villainous acts right before him but I don't have to like that, and can think and voice the opinion that it is contrary to the character this new "take" is based on historically. Since, you know, why else would you put the character in the game if not to appeal to the established base?
@DarkDreamTCK:
DeleteLifted directly from X's Story Mode in Teppen:
"There was one particular robot named "X", who could think, feel, and make his own decisions."
X is very mych operating under the same rules except in this one particular instance where he operates under radically different rules, apprently.
I saw this on this site maybe a couple years ago off and on and even if not canon, it still looks interesting, but in some ways, comes across as mystical. Though the descriptions of the past and characters is interesting to me. At least we are getting more diversity lately (it seems) vs just back to back Dive posts though. The art and character descriptions seem interesting, though I don't care about card games.
DeleteYeah ok that's fair. I think it would have made much more sense that he doesn't wanna attack Cammy cuz they're allies (teamed up in a previous expansion). Not sure why they leaned towards the Asimov stuff. Especially when you consider that the story already had him busting caps at Wesker even in spite of his confusion. Translation losses maybe. I still very much like this take of X (anything that can allow X to evolve into the future without being screwed over by Inafune bias [still mad about Elpizo]), but yeah it is weird that he's just taking it instead of putting on Gaea Armor or something.
ReplyDeleteIt would make more sense if that were the real Cammy being brainwashed and not an imposter. Then X would have a valid reason to not fight back, even if it might still be the wrong reason.
Delete@DarkDreamTCK
DeleteX fought Zero his best friend, you think it would be out of character for him to fight Cammy, a casual acquaintance at best?
I think it's just the fact that Cammy is a human ally that without really him to not fight back, cuz realistically idk what damage she can take from him without getting murked. Zero I feel he'd think would be sturdy enough to handle it
