Fan-Game Mega Man X Innocent Impulse is a Colorful, Open-World Romp

Mega Man X Innocent Impulse is a fan-game that's been on the burner for a few years -- and it's shaping up quite nicely.

Created by a dedicated group of fans, Innocent Impulse offers players the chance to explore an 2D open-world filled with collectibles and Mavericks to hunt. Interestingly, the game takes some inspiration from the Mega Man Xtreme duology -- that's something we don't see too often.

There's a short playable demo available to download from the game's itchio page. A second demo is due sometime later this month. The footage in the trailer above comes from that very build! In the meantime, demo #1 is primed and ready for ya.

Check it out! And good luck to Solren, Tommycase and the rest of the team!

    3. Clearly you don't know the amount of effort that a 2D game needs, there is NO WAY to automatize sprites creations, specially if you want something like PS1 era. Megaman X Corrupted started with 1 person, but know there is a whole team working in the sprites. The game is about 66% completed and it has taken almost 15 years to reach this point!!!!

    6. @Gary Daniel: I get what you are saying about automation and the progression in ease of use modern day tools allow for, but some things, at least as of 2023 just have a threshold of manual input that hasn't been overcome yet. Art (at least in terms of covincing sprite animation of a certain quality) is one of them.

Believe it or not I would bet in many ways producing graphical assets for a high-end sprite based visual style is MORE difficult than something like Doom Eternal. Since high-end 3D unreal engine rigging, modeling and animation/physics work is more conducive to "automation" or tool assistance than hand drawn frame by frame animation.

Even tho the PS1 era is decades old by now it IS still the PEAK of sprite work. Sprite design is like cel animation, it can opperate with minimal tech, but after a certain threshold there is simple (as of yet) no way to circumvent many aspects of the workload in order to produce an authentic replica of the result from those processes. It's actually not that easy to automate hand crafted, highly stylized and creatize artwork and animation even today. Which is why fighting games from the golden age of sprite work are rarely imitate today, and fully hand drawn games like Cuphead and SkullGirls take years to produce and generally have less content overall compared to their contemporaries. Some games like Blazblue and KOFXIII straight up asset dump for many sequels or bankrupt their company due to the workload. Heck even MMX4 and Metal Slug rarely have modern day games attempting their caliber of visual styles, even in the indie scene.

    11. Wow. You posted not one, but 4 lengthy diatribes of nonsenae based in assumptions and made up positions taking one simple argument completely out of context: You don't know what sprite work is like. Have you ever even done any? You've not once made that claim. Instead make dozens of assumptions. Building your own PC is irrelrvant. And also not proof of intelligence, but I digress.

Its also funny because the whole damn thing will probably diaappear in a few hours when you realize how foolish and hypocritical it makes you look as well.

You were the first to get personal and highly emotional. Did you even realize that?

Thats the last time I have anything to say to you. Your reply will no doubt be whimsical. But will probably be deleted because thats your modus operandi. So whatever.

    12. Phone typo's... Damn it all. Oh well. Whatever.
That's what you get when your in a hurry.

    14. He said you don't know what your talking about when it came to sprite work. That was it. You replied getting personal and angry. So yeah, you started it. Quit claiming you were attacked. You're big screen basic reading skills still need work.
It would be fun pointing out each case of blatant hypocrisy in this thread but clearly that would also be pointless. That's homework for you if your truly wise and intellectually honest. By the way, I built my own PC. I am far from the brightest fry in the tool shed. Take that as you will.

And since were talking about me now, since we cant focus on the issue at hand and have to deflect as much as possible, I call out bullshit when I see it. Protodude (or more likely Google) is no exception. I make no claim I am always right. Often I am wrong. But guess what, they are still there. People call out bullshit when I do it. As they should. Whatever.
And yea, I do hold a grudge because your ridiculousness got the thread shut down by inferring a bunch of crap I never said. As your doing yet again. I never got the opportunity to set you straight on that foolishness.

  2. A Mega Man X action adventure? Yes please!

  3. And here we have yet another fan game that's decided to "be different" and very likely bit off more than they can chew. If this has been in development for "a few years" and is only just getting to "version 0.2", then I don't see it hitting any major milestones anytime soon.

I understand the need to build up hype, but honestly, it's probably best to just keep games like this under wraps until it's either near completion, or has been completed, then release a demo cut from that build. Otherwise, all that hype will turn to hate, then fizzle into disinterest.

    1. I'd say we should remain positive and be happy that there are people out there trying to provide free entertainment for us - while we wait more than a decade for a new X game.
