Live Action Mega Man Movie Directors Say "Big News" is Coming Soon

It appears we're on the verge of some major news concerning Capcom and Chernin Entertainment's live action Mega Man movie. Directors Henry Joost and Rel Schulman sat down with IGN this afternoon to provide a brief update on the project, which has been in development since 2018.

"We're super excited about it," said Henry Joost. "I think we're going to have some big news about it soon. I can't say all that much about it right now but it's a project very near and dear to our hearts. We're psyched."

Rel Schulman adds, "[Mega Man] is an underdog hero and both of us are deeply fascinated with robotics and the future of automation, for better or worse. I think trying to combine that into one of our favorite historical video games is the ultimate challenge."

Tentativelly titled "Mega Man", the film will be directed by
Henry Joost and Rel Schulman, produced by Masi Oka and written by Mattson Tomlin, the co-writer of Matt Reeve's upcoming The Batman (2021). There are no details on story, cast or a release date at this time.

We'll keep you posted!

    1. Mega Man 11 came out 2 years ago, he's a fan favorite character in smash, and we are getting legacy collections once a year. It's not 2011 anymore. This franchise is far from dead.

    2. Mega Man 11 would like to know your location

  2. Please let the big news be that it's cancelled...

  3. I’m both really hyped and really scared for this movie. The Sonic movie being great gave me hope for this one.

    1. if it goes with a similar style with megaman, roll, protoman if he shows up be cgialong with the robot masters(that i hope is kept to just the first 2 games so it won't clutter.)

while dr. light & wily(plus whatever humans they'll likely pull just don't have them overshadow the game characters.kinda like how in the archie comics outside of xander they gave a nice look to the megaman world while still focusing on the game events.)be kept live action.(personally would prefer cgi as well.)

i don't have that much expectations of the mega man movie but i don't think it'll harm the series and simply think "if it tries to be good i'll be glad,if it's bad i really won't care as we have the games and the impending releases of x9/12 & whatever is planned for the other series to look forward to that really won't hang on this movies success."

    2. I fully expect that if the movie industry gets their claws on this they will screw it up. Badly. They ruined everything else from my child hood in one way or another. Fortunately, things being what they are right now, I fully expect this to get cancelled. Or not get developed for another 10 years or so.

You wanna do a live action? Scrap this idea and let one of those companies in Japan that did Space Battleship Yamato or Ruroni Kenshin do it. You will at least get a film reminiscent of it's source material. Without any of the Hollywood BS attached to it.

    3. "i don't have that much expectations of the mega man movie but i don't think it'll harm the series..."

It's fine if you feel that way, but I disagree with this notion. Capcom has done things like the bad ports on ios devices of the Classic series that has really not put the series out on its best foot in front of a large, casual audience. I think something like that absolutely can harm the series.

That and if the movie comes out and outright bombs, well I don't think that's something the franchise needs right now either. We JUST got it back.

  4. God I wish hollyweird would have went with that Bionic Commando movie instead.

    1. Actually, Bionic Commando would possibly do well as a movie. Get the right person to play Spencer, and it could have enough star power to draw a lot of people in.

  6. "[Mega Man] is an underdog hero"

Really? I've never gotten that impression from him.

    1. Dude it's a generic throwaway line. These people have no real connection to Mega Man. They could have said the same damn thing about Goku and most heroes outside of maybe Superman and Saitama.

    2. If that's the impression they got from him, I have a feeling their interpretation will not be very good.

    3. I guess if we're talking the story from the very first game, with him as the looked-over household robot, sure. But that's about it. I'm not feeling to confident about this either.

    4. In a way I can kind of understand the interpretation.

Mega Man was designed to be child-like after all, and going up against an army of his brothers and Wily's other robots essentially by himself doesn't sound like the odds would really be in his favor, even with a variable weapon system.

I just don't know if that's what they're talking about, and I have a funny feeling it's not going to be what's reflected in the end product.

    5. To be honest, so far the people who have worked on these video game movies seem to be people who grew up with the IP or are genuinely interested in making something good.

Considering Sonic and Detective Pikachu, I'm willing to give this one a fair chance. Far more of once than I gave the Sonic movie and Detective Pikachu in the beginning.

  7. I have ZERO interest in anything Hollywood will do TO Mega Man.

  8. I really wonder whether it'll be a theatrical release or go to VOD. I'd much prefer to see Mega Man on the big screen, but I suppose time will tell.

  9. To throw some good vibes in here: Don't get too hung up on how this movie turns out (assuming it even comes out).

Think back to all the silliness that has occurred throughout this franchise's history. Mega Man in the US somehow managed to survive the original box art, the Captain N interpretation, Ruby Spears (heck it's so goofy, we practically find it endearing at this point), and now Fully Charged and this weird-looking comic adaptation.

None of the above things ended up "rebooting" Mega Man or taking it in a completely different direction. The teams at Capcom Japan who really lead the IP over the years have always stuck to the source and guided it in a very deliberate manner. Yes, Capcom is a corporation and they will absolutely license the IP to anyone who shows interest, but the games themselves are really what matters and as you can see by Mega Man 11, they still fully intend to be faithful to the source. Some 90min corny film adaption will NOT change anything.

    1. If it were a 90 minute corny film, I wouldn't care.
What they will make will in all probability be a 90 minute lecture.

    2. 90 minute lecture on what? I didn't get that impression with the Sonic movie or even the 94 Street Fighter movie.

    3. I don't know what, yet, exactly. But I have a lot of ideas based on recent film trends.
I've seen enough come from the film industry, especially lately, to be concerned.
It's not a guarantee, but the odds are bad.

  10. Anything to keep Mega Man in the public eye so we get more games, I'm all for it!

  11. I don't wanna knock this film, especially when we know nothing about it, but I always find it funny when directors get interviewed so they can say things like, "We're very excited about this." Like has a director ever said something like, "We're honestly not very into this one, but we're doing the best with what we've got and we like getting a paycheck."
