For those of you with good longterm memory, you may recall a small series of fan-games by a group called Mend who produced "de-makes" of both Rockman 7 and Rockman 8. These de-makes became known as Rockman 7FC and Rockman 8FC ("FC" meaning "Famicom"). Way back in 2009, we reported that the group was also looking at de-making Rockman Rockman (Mega Man Powered Up), Rockman Mega World (Mega Man: The Wily Wars) and Rockman & Forte (Mega Man & Bass). Unfortunately those projects never reached completion.
However, there is now renewed hope for a Rockman & Forte de-make in the form of "Mega Man & Bass FC"!

Revealed on YouTube and Twitter by Triple Squid, this project originally started out as a late April Fools prank last year. Triple Squid released a fake trailer for an 8-bit Mega Man & Bass project as it was also around the time of Mega Man & Bass' 21st anniversary. After the video was released, a lot of people believed the project was the real deal. However, there is now renewed hope for a Rockman & Forte de-make in the form of "Mega Man & Bass FC"!
Fast forward to April 2020, Triple Squid received a message from Kensuyjin33 (a past sprite contributor for the Mega Man X Corrupted fan game) and the rest, as they say, is history. They are now a team of 1 programmer, 7 spriters and 3 composers all working to bring this project to fruition! You can check out the full reveal trailer below.
No release date has been set for this project yet; these things take time to complete, after all! But you can check out Triple Squid's Twitter here and their YouTube channel here for any updates.

I feel like these guys (this guy?) are already overextending. Showing off the basic engine and part of one level really doesn't wow me. But… I'll try and stay optimistic about this project. After all, I've been waiting for this since playing Rockman 8 FC… which was okay, so.

ReplyDeleteNo, I think it's because the original games have some design flaws / changes that make them not fall in line with the earlier games, so re-imagining them as more classic-styled games is a good bit of fun.

DeleteI mean, yeah, there's always gonna be a market for "retro" games… but when 99% of all noteworthy Mega Man fan games are NES-style, that's pretty lame.
But, that's just my opinion.
Then maybe I can bestow a little enlightenment: I've been in advance drawing classes and part of our course is to watch contemporary artists and discuss them with fellow classmates. Long story short, some artists look to the past and actually use the same methods artists they are inspired by use. For instance, Walton Ford using printmaking to mimic Audubon's 19th-century naturalist art style, and Csaba Markus using a painting technique, the Sfumato, that's most famously used by Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. To be able to use the methods and techniques that some consider "obsolete" requires a lot of time researching, practicing, and ultimately appreciating the effort put into creating the original art pieces. For me, it amazes me how rich in detail and colorful a picture of Donald Duck looks when made in metal embossing. It just shows how much work was done not only with the fan made "demakes" but also with the official ones like Mega Man 9 & 10: "If it ain't Baroque, don't fix it."
DeleteYeah OK art guy. I prefer Rock/Mega Man not to be stuck in 8-bit as its main appeal, thank you very much. No amount of da Vinci academia "art studies" is going to change that.
Deleteglovetheglove, you could make that argument about literally any video game series, so a de-make isn't really the answer, but I guess some people will never stop hating on 7 and 8 like they were bad games just because they weren't 8-bit. If that's the logic they use, it's a pretty weak argument that holds no water.
Delete...Honestly. While I won't deny the fact that there are people who hate on Mega Man 7, 8, and MM&B simply because they aren't 8-bit, did it not ever occur to anybody that people create these "de-makes" just for fun?

Deletecan all of you guys shut up, just because some people dislike M&B, 7 or 8 for not being 8-bits not mean LITERALLY EVERYONE DOES i disliked 7, loved M&B and was neutral with 8 none of my dislikes come from the games being 8-bits so please stop assuming everyone do that and there is nothing wrong with demakes, just like how there is nothing wrong with remakes, some people just prefer x graphics and music over this x one especially when most of megaman games was made for 8-bits some people just prefer it, i saw a lot of people who loved the idea 7,8 and M&B demakes and still loved the original 16-bits games so don't go assuming that, also while 8-bits games tend to have less details compared to 16-bits games not mean people do them because they are lazy, i have done several 8-bits sprites by now and while they not are hard as 16 bits or higher sprites you still need to put effort them and is very time consuming, especially when you try to imitate a advance 8-bits style like megaman not to mention working on 8-bits music is pain due to limited music channels and sounds so please don't go saying people do 8-bits games/demakes because they are just lazy and not put effort, because they do and is not a easy task to do.

DeleteI liked their work with 8 since it made for a more challenging experience. It did lose some of the game's charm and more interesting features, but it was an acceptable trade-off for the ability to play any one stage and better bosses.
ReplyDeleteI played 7FC after, but it didn't feel as good since it was really close to what 7 already was other than aesthetic elements. I'm interested to see what will be changed from he SFC version, but Mega Man and Bass is already more challenging and has faster controls than Mega Man 8, so the experience will probably be a bit less of a novelty than 8FC.
These aren't the same people that made the Rock Man 7 & 8 FC's.

My pal Trinitronity works on his own version of MM&B NES, it even has a demo (Coldman, Groundman and Astroman levels) and was featured on one of fangamedev expos.
ReplyDeleteYes, but they're doing it in Megamix Engine which I don't like.... there's just something off with Megamix Engine games. When a game has it's own engine, THAT's the real thing.
DeleteUnfortunately, they're going to change so many things, to alter the levels, to change the bosses' difficulties, change the behaviours of so many enemies, add a lot of stuff from RM Forte 2, to this is actually not going to be RM Forte demake. They're making their own game, wrongly labeled as "Rockman Forte FC". So, all guys who hoped that this game will be like RM7 and 8 FC, which is what we all wanted I guess... you can forget about this game. Our only hope is the other project (the one that has a demo out since 2020 with 3 levels), that one looks to be what we want, but unfortunately uses Megamix Engine....
