The Year in Review and the Mega Man 2020 Roadmap

Another years goes by for Mega Man and for all of us here at Rockman Corner. 2019 hasn't been as hectic as last year, what with the release of Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2 and Mega Man 11. Nevertheless, Mega Man kept generating news more than ever even in a transitional year. We published around 240 articles this year - an average close to five articles every week - making us an essential destination to get news about anything and everything related to the Blue Bomber.

Stay with us after the break where we'll be taking a look at the most important pieces of Mega Man news from 2019 and what to expect from 2020!

Rockman X DiVE to Be Released in Q1 2020

Capcom Taiwan's words, not ours

After a little bit of uncertainty with the release date of Rockman X DiVE, Capcom Taiwan finally communicated via their social medial channels that Rockman X DiVE will not be released this year. If you remember, the announcement trailer stated a 2019 release and in a recent financial report Capcom Japan also stated a 2019 release. Last week we discovered that the game was slated for Winter 2019 as opposed to just 2019, and now Capcom Taiwan have confirmed a Q1 2020 release date.

The information we have here at Rockman Corner makes us believe that the development team is aiming to have the game released on or around February 14th, 2020. Game development is an ever-changing creature and things can change quickly, but do know that the development team is working hard to meet that time frame.

We will keep you informed.

A Sneak Peek at the Rockman Live 2020 Concerts

We are two weeks away from the first Rockman Live 2020 concert, which will take place on January 4th at the Shinagawa Intercity Hall in Tokyo. While most of us won't have the chance to witness the concerts in person, and with the uncertainty of a CD/DVD release, we will be left in the dark for the most part. However, thanks to the Brass Girls Band MOS, we can take a sneak peek at them rehearsing one of the songs that will be played at the concerts: Dr.Wily Stage 1 from Mega Man 2.

In related news, we are sadly to report that the drummer Yu "masshoi" Yamauchi passed away on December 4, 2019 and has been replaced by Louis (Tokyo concerts) and Genta Shirakawa (Osaka concerts).

You can check the complete concerts set list here and other related news in the Rockman Live 2020 tag.

"OK K.O.!" Creators Almost Pitched a Mega Man Crossover

From Captain Planet to Sonic the Hedgehog, Cartoon Network's wonderfully quirky O.K! Let's Be Heroes is no stranger to pop-culture crossovers. Had the show gone on longer we may have seen even more dream team-ups. One idea that was nearly pitched a few years ago, in fact, featured the show's titular K.O. meeting Mega Man himself!

Capcom Files Trademarks for "Rockman DASH", "Tron Ni Kobun" and "Rockman & Forte"

A wealth of Capcom-related trademarks recently went live in Japan, each corresponding to a dormant or legacy IP. There's one for Dino Crisis, Power Stone and even Darkstalkers, to name a few. In terms of Mega Man, Capcom actually filed four individual trademarks:

While nothing has been officially announced, I think the gears in our heads are collective turning to the same thought. With the Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection due in February, it's only naturally for us to wonder what "Legacy Collection" will come next. This could very well be our first breadcrumb... if that.

The Rockman & Forte trademark is less clear. Beyond the Wii U Virtual Console port, Rockman & Forte has been mostly "forgotten", absent from both Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 and 2. Who knows what the deal is here.

Indeed, the existence of new trademarks for Rockman DASH, Tron and Rockman & Forte carry heavy implications. Capcom have a large interest in older titles and "awakening dormant intellectual properties," after all. This could all very well relate to that line of business. There's also the idea that Capcom are merely renewing old trademarks for protection (which is relatively routine every few years or so). While I don't disagree with that notion, it's interesting that of the many, MANY Mega Man titles not renewed we have two that are related to one another (DASH and Tron) and one for a game that hasn't been re-released in several years (Rockman & Forte).

Of course, while it's fun to entertain thoughts of what *could be*, it's best to keep your expectations in check until something a bit concrete surfaces.

We'll keep you posted.

Classic Rockman and X Appear Together in Rockman X DiVE Anniversary Art

To commemorate the classic series' 32nd anniversary and the X series' 26th anniversary, the official Rockman X DiVE Facebook page posted the above piece, which brings X and classic Rockman alongside other Rockman X DiVE characters and classic series Rockman. And if you've been following my breadcrumbs on Twitter, you'll quickly realize why this is so significant.

I can confirm that shortly after Rockman X DiVE's official launch (which is still purportedly coming before the end of the year), players will have the opportunity to unlock classic Rockman as a fully playable character. This piece, drawn by Keiske Mizuno, is very much the first *official* hint that he's coming soon.

Classic Rockman will be the first non-X series playable character with more to come... from classic and beyond.

More news on this front soon!

Rockman X DiVE - Alia and Pallette Models Updated

Leading up to the eventual launch of Rockman X DiVE on iOS and Android devices, the development team at Capcom Korea have provided fans with a little peek at some cosmetic changes being made to Alia and Pallette. As you can see above, the extra polish has allowed the Navigators to appear more "on model". Pallette in particular looks more like herself.

Now, as for when we can play the final version of Rockman X DiVE, well, we really don't have an answer anymore. Originally, Capcom Korea intended on launching the game before the end of 2019 and holding a public beta test as well... all before January 1st, 2020. That was the goal. However, the development team haven't said much, if anything about dates since October. Pending official word from Capcom Korea, we can only assume Rockman X DiVE has been delayed into 2020.

With Mega Man's 32 anniversary and Mega Man X's 26th anniversary happening in just a couple short days (December 17th), perhaps that will be an opportune time to announce the new release date... or shadow drop the game itself. We shall see!

You Might Need to Pre-Order Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection Digitally on PS4 Again

If you pre-ordered the digital version of Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection on PlayStation 4 before the game was delayed to February 25th, you might need to go back and pre-order again. The following message is being sent out to some PS4 users:

"Due to the recent change in release date for Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection, your pre-order has been cancelled.

You have been refunded back to your original payment source. If your original payment source
was unavailable, we refunded the purchase amount to your PSN wallet."

So yeah, it's probably a good idea to check and see if your initial pre-order is still valid. Again, this only applies to the digital PlayStation 4 version.

Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection is due on February 25th, 2019.

Thanks for the tip, SonyOfLaststation!

New Image of Rockman Zero/ZX Double Hero Collection Bust + Vent/Aile Art

Rockman Unity brings us a brand-new look at the bust that comes with the Japanese Rockman Zero/ZX Double Hero Collection limited edition. First revealed back in August, the bust stands at roughly 5-inches tall and depicts a split image of Zero and Vent/Aile. The limited edition set can be pre-ordered exclusively through e-Capcom:

What's more, only in Japan, a lottery is taking place to win an exclusive Vent and Aile print illustrated and signed by Toru Nakayama. Everyone who buys/pre-orders the game through e-Capcom will be automatically entered in the drawing to win. It's unlikely any of us will win but, hey, nothing can stop you from admiring some new art. Check it out above!

Mega Man X Command Mission 2004 Developer Interview Translated

Thanks to my buddy Frank deWindt, we were able to obtain a copy of the "Rockman X Command Mission Complete Bible", a relatively chunky-sized guidebook for Mega Man X Command Mission. I'll be hosting scans of the entire book on the Rockman Corner Dropbox in the very near future. For now, however, we have a little treat to tide you over.

After the jump below, you'll find a previously untranslated interview with the game's development staff. A lot of interesting topics are touched upon... including brief mention of a hypothetical Command Mission 2! (although nothing came of it).

Rockman ZX Advent Manga English and Spanish Translation Issue #1

The manga adaptation of Rockman ZX by Shin Ogino was originally serialized in "Fami2 Comica" between August 2006 and August 2007. It was supplied with "Famitsu DS + Cube & Advance" magazine with a tankoban release. Some time later, the manga recieved an official English translation by Udon Entertainment in 2010.

Following the release of Rockman ZX Advent, Shin Ogino returned to adapt the game in manga form. His work was once again serialized in Fami2 Comics between September 2007 to April 2008 spanning eight installments. Unfortunately, unlike the original ZX manga, Ogino's Rockman ZX Advent adaptation didn't receive a collected release nor was it ever translated in English... Until now!

The Story of Shigeto Ikehara's Mega Man Manga

It's been nearly 28-years since Shigeto Ikehara's Mega Man manga adaptation graced the black-and-white pages of Comic BomBom. In that time, zero–count them—zero of Ikehara's Mega Man stories have been translated into English. Don't bother asking me why. I don't believe an actual answer ever came to light. It's just the sad reality we live in.

But, hey, all isn't entirely lost. We have folks like Gaijillionaire to enlighten us on what we're missing. The latest episode of "GTV" is "The Story of Mega Man in Manga Form" – a visual, narrated reading Ikehara's first Mega Man book. It's a dramatic (and admittedly cute) retelling of the events of Mega Man 1 from start to finish.

So grab an E-Tank, sit back, relax and tune in! If you like what you saw, send a tweet to @UdonEnt! Maybe with enough fan-support they'll finally bring these to our shores.

Mysterious Keisuke Mizuno "Zero and Zero" Artwork Teased

Mega Man series producer Kazuhiro Tsuchiya and Rockman Unity are teasing a rough piece of artwork designed by Keisuke Mizuno featuring Zero (Mega Man X series) and Zero (Zero series) striking a valiant pose.

Both Tsuchiya and Rockman Unity aren't saying what the piece is for, though. On Twitter, Tsuchiya told fans to "please wait for details from the official community!" and Ucchy says "where the finished version will be released will be revealed at a later date!" In other words, we don't know what this will be used for.

So, we've got some speculating to do. The layout of the "Z" insignia in the center is pretty similar to the design on the Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection. It could very well be related to that. There's also the possability this will appear on merchandise – a print, wallpapers, acrylic stands. We don't have too much information to go by right now, unfortunately. What do you think?

Four PS1 Rockman Games Are Being Removed From the Japanese PlayStation Store

Some not-so-great news coming out from Japan this evening. According to Rockman Unity, Four PSOne Classic titles – Rockman 8, Rockman X4, Rockman X5 and Tron Ni Kobun (better known as The Misadventures of Tron Bonne in the west) are being discontinued from the Japanese PlayStation Store in a matter of weeks. All four titles will leave the service on December 13th, 2019.

Capcom Japan did not disclose why these titles are being removed. Further, there seems to be no word if these titles will be removed from other regions either.  Fans can still download three of four games from other sources on the PlayStation Store, however: Rockman 8 in Rockman Classics Collection 2, Rockman X4 in Rockman X Anniversary Collection 1, and Rockman X5 in Rockman X Anniversary Collection 2. Those collections are very much here to stay.

Tron Ni Kobun is, sadly, the odd one out. There is *no* other official method to purchase and download the game in Japan. The Japanese version of the game is also the only way to play the PocketStation Kobun mini-games legitimately, too. I suppose this truly furthers the need for a hypothetical Rockman DASH/Mega Man Legends Collection.

We'll let you know if more news develops on this front. For now, keep your fingers crossed that Tron Bonne STAYS on the US and PAL PlayStation Stores!

Rockman ZX Soundsketch: ZX Gigamix Booklet and Drama Tracks Translation

Released back in April 2008, this is the last soundtrack Inti Creates released for the Rockman ZX series and the first to feature the company's trademark drama tracks. This album is features remixed tracks from both games in the series: Rockman ZX and Rockman ZX Advent. It includes five drama tracks and three all-new tracks ("Flow of the Times", "Freebirds" and "Battle Giga Mixture"). Additionally, there's two vocal themes – "Believe in Myself" sung by the Japanese voice actress of Grey (Hiromi Hirata) which is Grey's character theme but previously was only instrumental (called "Destiny" in ZXA Tunes) and "Be One", sung by Ash's voice actress, Ami Koshimizu which was previously sung by CAO.

The drama tracks have been available in English for a couple of years now, which you can watch right here. Today, though, we have a brand-new translation of the soundtrack's booklet after the break below. Both the drama track translation and the booklet translation were made possible by the hard work of our friend Sidier!

Check Out the Updated Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection Key Art

By way of the official Mega Man Twitter account, Toru Nakayama went back and revised the  Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection key art that will be featured on the game's packaging and in-game. You can compare the updated art above with the original version here or check out this handy-dandy GIF made by our friend MegaQuint.

The revisions are small but impactful. Most noteworthy are the refined tweaks to Zero and Vent's heads. The faces of various background characters were changed a little, too. All of these adjustments only make this already fantastic piece even better, if you ask me.

Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection goes on sale February 25th, 2020.

Rockman ZX Advent Soundtrack: ZXA Tunes Booklet Translation

Released back in August 2007, ZXA Tunes was the physical release of Rockman ZX Advent remastered soundtrack. The album came on two CDs and even featured the 8-bit soundtrack from "Rockman a (antique)" mini-game as a bonus. Despite Inti Creates' tradition of including drama tracks with their Rockman soundtracks, the second album in the ZX series doesn't – instead, it comes with four vocal tracks.

Rockman ZX Soundtrack: ZX Tunes Booklet Translation

Released back in October, 2006, ZX Tunes is the physical release of the Rockman ZX remastered soundtrack divided into two discs, one for each hero of the game: an Aile disc and a Vent disc. The soundtrack also includes the game's image song "Innocence" sung by the Japanese lyricist and vocalist CAO (Kaori Nakamura). One of the peculiarities of this album is that it comes with eight different CD covers by artists that worked on the Rockman series from Hitoshi Ariga to Toru Nakayama, among other well known names.

You can see their respective covers after the break along with the fully translated booklet - which contains plenty of interesting information - courtesy once again to Sidier.

Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection Delayed to February 25th, 2020

Mega Man series producer Kazuhiro Tsuchiya has announced via video message that Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection has been delayed to February 25th, 2020 (originally slated for January 21st, 2020).

In the video message, Tsuchiya says he and his team are working hard to deliver the best game possible. He is deeply sorry for the inconvenience and appreciates your continued support of the Mega Man series.

Although we won't be playing the game as soon as we thought, this admittedly small delay can only bring about good things. More time means a better quality product. Look forward to it!

Mighty No.9 to be Discontinued From Japanese PlayStation Store

Publisher Spike Chunsoft will delist Mighty No.9 from the Japanese PlayStation Store tomorrow, November 15th. Users who already own the game will still be able to redownload it at any time after November 15th.

Spike Chunsoft did not disclose why the game will be removed from the Japanese storefront. However, it's worth noting that a couple of other Spike Chunsoft/Deep Silver published games are being delisted tomorrow as well. These include Homefront: The Revolution and Saints Row IV. Pending official word from Spike Chunsoft, it's presumed that the publishing deal with Deep Silver has expired. If that is the case, it is unlikely that Mighty No.9 will be pulled from other regions.

If something happens to change, well, we'll let you know.

The first five minutes show off the game's different menus, filters and screen layouts. You can actually adjust the opacity of the bottom screen display! The back half is devoted to Z-Chaser Mode with two Capcom TV hosts racing against each other in Mega Man Zero 1. It's a fun match from start to finish.

Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection dashes to PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC on January 21st, 2020.

Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2 at 1.4M Units, MMLC1+2 at 2M, Says Tsuchiya

Hot on the heel's of yesterdays' news that Mega Man 11 sold a million copies, Mega Man franchise producer Kazuhiro Tsuchiya took to Twitter to share updated sales figures for Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1&2 and Mega Man Legacy Collection 1&2.

"Mega Man 11 shipped 1 million units worldwide," declared Tsuchiya. "And ... MMX Legacy Collection 1&2 total reached 1.4M units, MM Legacy Collection 1&2 total shipment is 2M units. Thanks for your awesome support! May the Blue Bomber be with you."

As one can expect, support and words of congratulations from fans and Capcom staff poured in. The whole thread is worth a read. It'll make your blue bomber heartstrings sing!

Now, it is worth pointing out that, at the time of this writing, Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2 and Mega Man Legacy Collection 1+2 do not appear on Capcom's Platinum Titles despite moving 1.4 million units and 2 million units, respectively. Tsuchiya hasn't commented on it yet, but speculations suggests that the collections are being considered separate SKUs.

The X Legacy Collection was sold separately in some territories (as Rockman X Collection 1 and Rockman X Collection 2) and therefore the 1.4 million units is a *combination* of the two. It's a similar situation with Mega Man Legacy Collection 1+2. We know for a fact that, as of September 2019, Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 sold 1.1 million units. Legacy Collection 2, meanwhile, didn't come close but together with MMLC1, the cumulative figure is 2 million units.

Phew! Okay. That was a lot of numbers. tl;dr, Mega Man is doing very, very well and all of this bodes well for the future. Good job everyone!

Mega Man 11 Reaches 1 Million Units Sold!

With a little over a month before we start celebrating Mega Man's 32nd anniversary, we just got the best early present possible. Capcom updated their Platinum Titles list (games that sold a million or more units) and, finally, Mega Man 11 has reached the one million units sold milestone! Mega Man 11 was released on October 2nd, 2018 and it took a little over a year to join the exclusive Platinum list.

Mega Man 11 joins other games in the franchise that have sold a million or more units: Mega Man 2, Mega Man Battle Network 4, Mega Man X1, Mega Man Legacy Collection and Mega Man 3. Sales of Mega Man 11 helped push the franchise to a total of 35 million units back in May 2019. Overall, the franchise has seen a growth of 2-3 million units between June 2018 and November 2019.

Back in February of this year, we reported that Mega Man 11 sold approximately 870,000 units and the Mega Man X Legacy Collection sold a total of 920,000 units since the later launched in July 2018. Surprisingly enough, it was Mega Man 11 who reached the one million units sold milestone first. We can only hope the Mega Man X Legacy Collection joins it soon!

Rockman X DiVE on Track to Launch This Year

Following Kazuhiro Tsuchiya's statement at the end of September saying " it may take a while for the game to officially launch" some fans speculated that the game may not be launching this year.  However, today via Capcom's Q2 FY2019 Financial Results, we have confirmation that the game is indeed launching this year as originally was announced in the reveal trailer:

We are pretty much two months away from the end of the year and they still have to conduct an Open Beta and of course launch the game itself. That said, we can expect regular news about Rockman X DiVE to resume soon after a relatively calm period following the end of the Closed Beta in August.

And speaking of Rockman X DiVE, the development team opened up a new Facebook page called "Rockman X DiVE – Derivative Work Group". Here, fans can post their fan-creations and, by the look of things, the development team will choose a topic from time-to-time to inspire fan creations. It's something to look forward to if you're the creative type!

The Live-Action Mega Man Movie Isn't Dead Yet, It Seems

Back in August we reported (via Variety) that the Mega Man live-action movie could have been shelved following Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox as a number of Fox-related films were reportedly cancelled mid-development. However, according to Capcom's latest financial results, the franchise is still poised for a live-action film adaptation.

Here is the relevant statement regarding expanded brand-awareness:
"... to generate synergy with its popular games via greater global brand awareness and value, the Company has been producing world-leading content, with brands such as Street Fighter and Resident Evil being made into Hollywood movies, now followed by Monster Hunter and Mega Man, which are also scheduled for live-action film adaptation."
At this time, it remains to be seen if this is the same project that was intended to be produced by Masi Oka and written and directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. What's more, there's no indication of Disney is involved or if Capcom are shopping the film around to different studios/distributors.

More news on this subject as it comes!

Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection: Special Interview with Toru Nakayama

Via the Rockman Unity blog, we have the rare chance to read an interview with Zero series character designer and illustrator Toru Nakayama. More recently, Nakayama was the character designer for Inti Creates' Dragon Marked for Death. He returned to the Zeries to create the boxart (and other goodies) for the Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection, as well.

Grab a cup of coffee because this is a lengthy interview, albeit with some information you may not have heard before. Nevertheless there's some very interesting information to be found!

Rockman X and Elemental Story Crossover Event Announced

Dragalia Lost won't be the only mobile game crossing over with our blue boy. A Rockman X-themed event is reportedly coming soon to Elemental Story; a relatively popular match-three RPG for iOS and Android.

Although details are few and far between at the moment, the contents of the event will officially be revealed on Friday, October 25th during a special Elemental Story broadcast on YouTube. The crossover event itself will begin on October 31st.

And yeah; that's all there is to say on this topic for now. An announcement of an announcement is one way to do things, I suppose. At least we know X, himself, will be a part of the festivities.

Our Mega Man Universe postmortem project continues with a look at two never-before-seen characters. My sources could not recall the official names for these girls, but one thing is absolutely certain: they were intended to be Mega Man and Roll's sisters for Mega Man Universe. We'll call them "Glasses" and "Met" for now.

Mega Man: Fully Charged Season 1 Officially Headed to YouTube (Update)

UPDATE: For one reason or another, the videos have got "private".  Sooo... yeah. We'll see what happens.

It looks like Mega Man: Fully Charged is, at last, freeing itself from the shackles of Cartoon Network. As of a couple weeks ago, full-length episodes of the show have begun appearing on the official Mega Man: Fully Charged YouTube channel. They've posted six episodes so far with more to come each weekend. They're region free, too! Check em out:

It beats me why they've chosen to not start at episode 1. But, hey, at least we're starting somewhere. By putting Fully Charged on YouTube, WildBrain (formerly DHX Media) are giving the show a chance at finding a larger audience. Fully Charged suffered a fate that's all too common on Cartoon Network: they schedule a non-CN Studios show at a "dead" timeslot, choose not to advertise it, then "gate" it behind cable-subscriber-only VOD and on-demand services. Today, though, we can all watch it.

If you haven't seen an episode of Fully Charged, well, it sounds like this is the way to go.

An Almost Perfect Model Kit: Kotobukiya X Video Reviews

Released back on August 28th, the one and only Maverick Hunter X marks the beginning of Kotobukiya's new Rockman X model kit line. With the Max Armor coming in December, Zero coming in the near future, and a fourth model kit to be revealed in early February, 2020, the excitement among fans and collectors is palpable! But how did the first kit turn out?

A few "figure-model kit"-centric YouTubers already got their hands on the X kit and published their reviews and even a live build of it online. All of them agree that it's a high quality kit, but it's no without flaws. It reportedly takes a long time to build (2-3 hours), there's too many seamlines, and some parts may fall apart when posing. It sounds like the shoulder joint in particular is a little problematic. But overall, this is a top-notch kit.

In case you want to check out other reviews besides the one at the top of this article, you might want to look at Dstar01 and Eugene42181 reviews.

Did you buy X a little ways back? Give us you opinion in the comments!

Exclusive: Mega Man Universe's Unreleased Soundtrack + Unseen Robot Master Art

With a bit of help from "a certain cat", I've managed to secure a handful of never-publicly-released materials from Mega Man Universe – Capcom's ill-fated Mega Man 2-inspired "Mega Man Maker" project that was axed in early 2011. My findings will be released gradually over time... but today, I'm happy to kick things off with a real treat.

For your consideration, we present to you Mega Man Universe's unreleased soundtrack (MP3 only) AND previously unseen official artwork of every MMU-style Mega Man 2 Robot Master! (illustrated by none other than Kimo Kimo). Hit the jump below and treat yourself!

Dimension Studios Zero Model Kit Features an Inner Skeletal Frame

As anticipated, Dimension Studios' upcoming Rockman Zero series Zero model kit made an appearance today at the "China International Comic Festival". Though it was only a prototype, much of the kit's key features were already in place.

First and perhaps most significant is confirmation that the kit features an inner skeletal frame, pictured on the left. Anyone who's put together some of the more complicated mecha kits out there will tell you just how important inner frame parts can be. Simply put, they're designed to make the fully-assembled figure more articulate. It's a skeleton in every sense of the word. I don't believe we've seen this feature on any previous Rockman kit before.

The kit will also include a Z-Saber and Z-Knuckle. The fingers of the Z-Knuckle are not articulate, meaning that the Z-Knuckle is an optional, interchangeable part. That alone gives us an idea how articulate the fully-assembled figure will be (i.e not too much).

Unfortunately, we're still in the dark about the kit's release date, price and availability. The China International Comic Festival runs for a few more days, though. Perhaps we'll here something by the weekend. Stay tuned!
