Mega Man: The Wily Wars Confirmed for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Mini
UPDATE: The game has been confirmed to appear on the US edition of the console via the Sega Genesis Mini official website.
Original Story: Rockman Mega World is headed to the Sega Mega Drive Mini, Sega announced. The game was confirmed alongside several other new additions for the Japanese edition of the mini retro console this morning during a Dengeki Online livestream. The other titles announced were Ghouls N Ghosts, Street Fighter 2 SCE, Golden Axe, Revenge of Shinobi, Phantasy Star 4, Beyond Oasis, Puzzle & Action Tant-R, Party Quiz Mega Q, and Yu Yu Hakusho Makyou Touitsusen
Rockman Mega World, better known as Mega Man: The Wily Wars outside of Japan, has become somewhat of a rarity in recent years. So to see that there will be a way to play this title for a fraction of the price is welcoming indeed! I should mention, though, that The Wily Wars was previously re-released for the handheld "Ultimate Portable Game Console" back in 2012. What we're looking at here, however, is the first widely distributed, "home console" re-release of the game in well over twenty years.
At the time of this writing, there's no news yet on whether or not Mega Man: The Wily Wars will be included in the US or UK version of the Genesis/Mega Drive Mini. I remain fairly confident we'll see it on our shores, but only time will tell. Hopefully we won't be waiting too long to find out.
The Sega Mega Drive Mini launches worldwide on September 19th.

Hopefully it's not based on the 50HZ PAL region's English release...
ReplyDeleteThen again, I can't really imagine them going through the effort of editing in the translation from that release into the original Japanese one considering this isn't purely a Mega Man/Capcom themed collection.
There is an actual US version that they could use, it was streamed over the Sega Channel service. They wouldn't need to cobble together the Japanese and European versions like that.
DeleteHopefully, but the good news is, it actually had a US release that Capcom likely has a copy of, it's just that it was only on the Sega Channel service. But even so, I'm pretty sure there's a hack for the European ROM that basically transforms it into an NTSC version, running at the intended 60fps. Would be rather simple for Sega/Capcom to do the same. I personally hope it's the actual Sega Channel ROM though, just because it's never seen the light of day and people will surely dump the games from this, thus finally preserving the US versions of Wily Wars.
DeleteOf course, there's always a chance they'll use the PAL ROM, but considering the really good lineup so far and the fact they're doing this in-house, I think Sega is actually really trying their best for the Mini.
The Mega Man Network confirmed its not the 50HZ PAL version, so rejoice!
DeleteI already had the Genesis mini preordered but this would've sealed the deal for me if I hadn't. I was not expecting to see this game on there at all.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! An actual reason to get a mini console.
ReplyDeleteI'm hopeful M2 will be able to dig up the 60hz US version the Sega Channel had... assuming that's what the Sega Channel actually had.
ReplyDeleteJust providing a bit more info:
ReplyDeleteLBD "Nytetrayn" reached out to SEGA PR for clarification on which version of the game this will be for the North American console. They say it's NTSC, not PAL, so this should mean it's not the slower version!

I wish those games were also released for the Genesis on Steam, but it only includes Sega's games...
ReplyDeleteYou can also play it now on a Analogue Mega Sg if you want reference quality.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of interpolation filters. It still remains to be seen how M2's work is on the video quality features.
