Rockman X3 Prototype (August 9, 1995) Released

I've got three Mega Man X series prototypes to release this month, and I'm kicking things off with an early Mega Man X3 sample version. This build is dated August 9th, 1995. It's two weeks younger than the previously released August 23rd build and, as such, it includes even more differences.

This build includes early and unused sprites for Blizzard Buffalo, Bit, the Goliath/Brown Bear Ride Armor, and even Sigma (along with an early Kaiser armor) with a style more similar to how he looked in the previous two games. There are other differences as well, like glitches, incomplete Cx4 effects, and a handful of debug commands. All of these things will be covered in an upcoming page on The Cutting Room Floor shortly.

You can download this prototype (and lots of other prototypes, sample versions, etc.) from the green "Betas & Protos" button on the right side of the blog. The file is "RockmanX3.0000.sfc".

Release notes and acknowledgments:

Rockman X3 Sample Aug.09.1995  14:00
Obtaining the cart and dumping the ROM: TX D.
Script to dump the ROM: skaman
ROM testing and documentation: GoldS

This prototype cost a friend of mine quite a bit of Zenny to obtain. If you'd like to help offset some of the costs, simply express your interest to do so in the comments section below. I'll hook you up.

With that out of the way, feel free to try this puppy out. Stay tuned for two more Mega Man X prototypes! One of them is really gonna knock your socks off (it's not the "White City" X1 but it's still pretty neat).

  1. Should I assume that you will release the other two prototypes next week and week after that? At that point there will only be one week left until mega man x legacy collection 1+2 releases.

  2. Hoo-whee! I was not expecting another prototype of this game! I think I might just let GoldS and the others handle documenting this beaut, though.

Tell your friend that they're super-awesome, Dude! Cheers!

  5. Could someone explain the "white city X1" thing? All I found was an old magazine article with a white, daytime version of the opening stage.

    1. It's a very early version of X1. Completely different opening stage

  6. This is beyond awesome! My deepest thanks to everyone involved, for preserving this and whatever releases are to come! And this isn't to minimize the importance or awesomeness of anything released or soon to be released, but I hope so much a build of X1 with the White City is out there somewhere safe, and someone will one day preserve it. That is my absolutely Holy Grail of lost prototype games, but anything in this series is like gold. Thank you, I can't wait to try this.

  7. That Sigma looks cooler, I always thought Sigma's sprite in X3 was really ugly, and I'm loving this one.

  8. Is this a paypal email we can send money to help cover the costs?

  9. Thank you, Inafune possessed the "White City" cart, It's in his house, locker no. 9 XD

I think we all should request CAPCOM to include all the prototypes into their proper game collections in future releases (for archival purposes). That way, we will also get the unfinished GBC MMV and MML3 prototype.

  10. Will it work on a hacked snes classic? I used hackchi 2.

    1. Yes, it'll work, but Hackchi doesn't yet have the ROM in its database, so you have to press Ctrl+Alt+E with it selected in Hackchi's game select menu to change the "Preset ID" to 3D11. Changing the Preset ID to that number will cause the ROM to be recognized as Mega Man X3 and properly emulate the Cx4 chip

  15. Man, please ask Capcom what computers and software they used to draw the characters in the 80s and 90s, they used PC, MAC or Amiga ? Softwares like Deluxe Paint or Photoshop? And ask about the games engines, old computer and offices photos, always wanted to know that. Make a post about the tools they used. Christ guide you.
