  1. At this point, I don't care if the next X game is a remake of X4, I want to X and Zero's models from this game being used in a real MMX game.

    1. Me too, I really hope what has happened with graphics hasn't steered people away from ripping models in this game. I really, REALLY want Jedah's model.

    2. I'd be down for that, but they ought to fix X's face and probably make them both less shiny.

    3. Honestly, I love the way Sakurai & the Smash team made him look in MegaMans final smash in Smash 4 in comparison to MvCI

  2. There are some cases where I like MVCI's version of theme songs over MVC3. This isn't one of them. It's not bad, and it's perfectly faithful to the original, but MVC3 did such a sick job with remixing it that it does a great job of surpassing it in spite of the overall overuse of synth in either of these games' soundtrack. It's definitely the better remix in this case.

On the other hand, I prefer Ryu's theme in this game than in MVC3.

Also holy shit, could Zero be more overpowered? I really want to see someone mad enough to stomp Zero players with X in the tournament circuit, but I don't think it'll happen.

    1. It could happen but even X would rather fight with Zero than against him, he probably would wonder why his fans want him to beat down what is in all likelihood his best friend all the time.

    2. I wish the X Vs Zero music from MMX5 automatically plays every time there's a match-up between X and Zero. That would be awesome and hilarious.

    3. @4:09 Oh please.

@4:59 The rumor mill has it that that's what'll happen in the story mode, though I imagine it'll be either butchered or watered down like either of their own themes.

    4. Oh please what? You guys are lucky Zero didn't eventually end up killing X (the original proper storyline for the Zero series set up since X by this foreshadowing line X-"Zero if I become a maverick you have to take care of me/JP version dispose of me), then I'd see the "oh please"...

    5. That would've just added fuel to the fire, m8. My point was we're not in-universe. The game isn't real, it's all fiction. I want to see X kick Zero's ass and get the glory, that's it. They can still be bros afterwards like always.

    6. Besides, if you want to play that game, then you're lucky that X didn't end up making good on his promise at the end of X3 to kill Zero and end the Maverick Virus once and for all.

    7. There is no proof that X was ever going to kill off Zero, that is just a fan assumption at best.

Mega Man Zero on the other hand was literally one month away from release to having a morally corrupted and authoritarian X meet his end at the hands of Zero, one month... Even the X official artwork was edited to look like Copy X but there wasn't enough time to edit the artwork in-game to match.

When I say X fans were lucky I didn't mean that as some sort of ominous threat, I'm sincerely saying you guys came that close from an official X vs Zero, ultimate winner Zero scenario.

As for killing Zero in X3 to solve the maverick virus problem, I don't see how that would work since it was an infected Sigma that persistently spread the evils of that disease. With what we know of the story as is I actually think X would have been corrupt morally way early without Zero grounding him, the entire point of X is that he is unstable because he has the emotional capacity of humans, something other Reploids like Sigma find to be a flaw.

    8. @11:18 & 1:21

The line about X having to destroy Zero in X3 was a line change added to the English translation, similar to the whole "DIE WILY" in Mega Man 7, in the original translation it only brings up that X is fated to battle Zero, just foreshadowing that they're gonna fight in X5.

Mean while it was pretty clear that they were building up to Zero beating X for the MMZ series in both translations of X's ending in X4, its really a pointless ending in hindsight, since nothing came of it, but what you gonna do?

    9. @1:21 Then things would've been different. Maybe X fans would've evaporated once X got turned into a villain. Or maybe they would've become either even more rabid and spiteful, or more devoted to their fan favorite, so we'd more or less still be having this conversation. If Zero did end up killing X, you really think fans of him wouldn't want to write off MMZ as fan fiction? We probably would've ended up more at each others' throats than usual, so you should be grateful someone on Inti Creates objected to that.

Remember that Sigma was infected by his encounter with Zero. Whether it was Zero himself who incubated the virus, or it was simply leaking from his capsule, the end goal in X5 was the same: awaken Zero with the virus so he could wreak havoc, starting with X. I'm willing to grant that X could've become morally corrupt after some time, but that probably would've happened after Zero was dead, which he was supposed to be more times than once. Another end still suggests that he comes out alright, with Zero's saber and memories of his friend intact, suggesting that he'd grown strong enough by that point to go on without him.

@10:33 For what it's worth, I find the American localization of MM7's ending more interesting, while the Japanese script of X3 would've left me just as confused as the American. The fact they never delivered on the buildup goes to show you the nature of how Capcom handled the Mega Man franchise. At least by the time they were making MMZ, they knew how to be more vague about the endings in case they had to make a sequel.

    10. "so you should be grateful someone on Inti Creates objected to that."

I am grateful, I don't want to see that outcome, my point was the X vs Zero line of thought at least to me leads to nothing but bad outcomes. Also I'm not sure Zero fans would be so petty even if X "kick Zero's ass and get the glory" the Zero fans seem way more inclined to like the character they are a fan of and support it rather than be resentful and seem more chill in general.

What you say about people treating the MMZ series as irreverent doesn't need Zero killing off X to be that way, because it's like that already. People consistently throw shade at the MMZ series and Zero's character in that series as is, all I see is Zero fans shrugging it off or calmly disagreeing while continuing to like the series.

    11. "the Zero fans seem way more inclined to like the character they are a fan of and support it rather than be resentful and seem more chill in general."

That's not hard to figure. Look at the care and attention Zero's gotten over the years. If you're a Zero fan, then you're sitting pretty. It's easy to be a fan of Zero because he's easy to love and he's enjoyed better treatment and more interest behind the scenes; he's never been allowed to stay dead even without Inafune's involvement, and he got his own exclusive spinoff series that got it's own sequel. There's plenty of love for Zero, but X? You have to beat the game twice to unlock him, or you can play as him later after you play as Axl or Zero for a bit. X fans have to work harder for the short end of the stick and take shit from smug satisfied Zero fans. I guess it would be better to ignore all that and shrug it off, but it's different.

I'm not surprised Zero fans have less to complain about. That's not a revelation. The worst things I've heard about MMZ is that some don't like the artstyle. If people are throwing shade on MMZ, it might be because people are either more interested in X or Mega Man right now. Those same people could either be the content MMZ fans who don't want an MMZ5, or the bitter X fans who want X to stop being overshadowed by Zero, or made to look weaker, or have him as a unlockable bonus. Compared to Zero, he's a half-baked hunter and a half-baked character, but the reason I still want to see him shine is because he simply has that potential.

    12. Hmmm...

Well I have to kindly disagree as both an X and Zero fan I liked Zero since his X1 appearance, I think I liked him more than X in that game and didn't really complain about his death and X definitely had more spotlight in that game.

As for ZX, people keep saying that it was a sequel to the Zero series because of its graphics but it really was just a continuation of the Mega Man main timeline.

What I mean by that is Inti-Creates would have made it "look" Mega Man Zero-ish graphically no matter how the main character looked. People just think MMZ has the monopoly on that graphical design because it was the first major project from Inti, but originally Inti wasn't even planning to make a game based on Zero, they just wanted to work on anything Mega Man, it was Inafune that suggested a spin-off based on Zero.

As for art style as in character's design and official artwork, that was actually done by a different main designer/artist that trained under the previous one, he was Inti's only artist employed by them at the time and even though he basically based his artstyle on the previous one, he most likely thought he was adding a radically different spin to it and that any other core similarities were not a conscious decision.

Take model ZX for example, outside of the color scheme being more equally balanced and divided to represent both characters fairly and an actual buster gun, there really isn't much they could do shape-wise to represent Zero and X fused without having Zero's design take over. X is iconic looking but kinda simple compared to Zero (which is the point because X's complexity comes from the many armors he grows into), Zero has a bunch of protruding shapes and extra design elements that when added to X just takes takes over. Can you imagine a helmet design that combines the elements of both X and Zero's design without it just turning into predominantly a Zero looking helmet without the use of coloring?

For me the benefits of being an X fan

X Pros: Way more forms and armors and general variety of visual presentation, story-wise fought so far against enemies and kept the world safe for longer periods than any other Mega Man series main character to date, making him to me the most prolific hero. Possibly the strongest protagonist in a Mega Man series to date lore-wise, at least potentially. More traditional Mega Man style gameplay and design.

There is plenty to love about X so far without complaining about the greener grass on Zero's lawn in my opinion, which is why I am a fan of his irrespective of how I feel about Zero.

    13. "Well I have to kindly disagree as both an X and Zero fan I liked Zero since his X1 appearance, I think I liked him more than X in that game and didn't really complain about his death and X definitely had more spotlight in that game."

I liked him in X1 too, and X2 and X3. He was also great in the Playstation and GBA games. His death in the first game worked because of how invested we were in his character. We became X and empathized with what was happening. I don't see how bringing it up like that is relevant to what we're talking about.

I'll concede to your arguments about ZX, considering how similar X was to Mega Man, except for the following statements:

"Take model ZX for example, outside of the color scheme being more equally balanced and divided to represent both characters fairly and an actual buster gun"

The buster shot's an improvement, but it's still pretty much the handgun doubling as a saber. The color scheme is heavily skewed in Zero's favor. It's called Model ZX, not Model XZ.

"there really isn't much they could do shape-wise to represent Zero and X fused without having Zero's design take over."

Making the model look more like the Giga Armor could've been an option. I can't really take statements like these seriously, because to me all it shows is a lack of imagination. I understand your point perfectly, but my question is why stop there?

To address your last points about X, it's nice lip service, but what it boils down to is X needs armors to be unique. Zero doesn't. Not to mention that X's armor situation is a bit of a mess, especially if you care about the lore. The armor system was a really fun mechanic, but it got less fun the longer X went without adapting those abilities to his base. It took him until X8 to be able to air-dash, just to keep up with Zero and Axl. He didn't started out with the double shot until ZX, where there you had to beat the game twice for that privilege, and neither the cross-charge nor the stock charge were well explored.
This idea of X gradually using armors to get stronger never really seemed to come up, and it's unfortunate because it ends up making X into little more than Mega Man 2.0, or Mega Man on life support. X5 demonstrated that point by giving X 2 armors based on Mega Man 6's Rush Armors.

What does it tell you when his first technical debut in a fighting game was, depending on your viewpoint, a rather insulting costume for Zero?

    14. And just to provide an example of somewhere I do think X was well represented, even with the rocky game career full of unrealized potential I've been describing, look at Project X Zone 1 & 2. Despite being right there next to Zero, X shines with the selection of weapons and abilities he displays when fighting, and the way he just jumps around and shoots enemies in the second game. It was amazing to me the first time I saw it, the most astounding moment being when X used the cross-charge shot as one of his moves, an ability that had NEVER been revisited until that game. It may seem small and insignificant to most, but it demonstrates the care that I want to see applied by the folks responsible for designing and developing X for a videogame or animation. The way he was represented in the second trailer for Rockman Online demonstrates everything I don't want to see done with X, right up there with not wanting to see for the umpteenth time how Bruce Wayne became The Batman.

  3. Why the X2 Zero theme? We've heard it a bit too much. Why not try something a bit different like the X4 Zero "theme" (opening stage and level clear theme)? I can't recall any remixes of that one off the top of my head.

    1. I personally would've liked to see his X5 theme get some love. That song is very overlooked. Though my favorite Zero theme is still his original theme from X1/Zero 1.

    2. Yeah, it'd be nice to hear something different. The X5 theme is easily one of his best.

    3. I would have liked to see the X1 theme. It's the best IMHO.

    4. Good question. They used Zero's Sky Lagoon theme for Project X Zone 2, and it sounded great.

  4. What really makes Zero a broken character is the fact that no matter how many times you kill him off, he keeps coming back to life more annoying than before.

    1. I think Zero's suffers most from how X is treated, not so much the exposure he gets. The fact that he keeps being brought back from the dead could be argument for how X was held back from growth in his own series.
