Bandai's Mega Armor Series Returns - Giga Armor Mega Man X Announced
If you were a Mega Man fan in the 90s, you likely hold fond memories of Bandai's Mega Armor figures. These articulate, 4-inch figures were simple model kits that could be customized with various armor and accessories based predominantly on the Mega Man X series. They were fun to collect and build. Unfortunately the line was discontinued in 2001 shortly after the release of Mega Man X6.
Today, Bandai are breathing new life into the 20-year-old line. The Mega Armor series is back and better than ever..
Behold; Giga Armor Mega Man X!
The above Mega Man X frame was revealed earlier today at a Tamashii event in NYC. It's the first figure in the new Giga Armor series, whose namesake comes from the extra level of detail and polish over the Mega Armor figures. Scale-wise, they look to be about as tall as the ill-fated D-Arts series.
Official information is few and far between at the moment, but we can assume these new figures will offer the same, if not more intricate levels of armor customization as their 90s counterparts. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long to find out.

Since these were unveiled in NYC,we Americans might be getting these too. Awesome. Hope we get a whole crapload of characters for this line.
ReplyDeleteOmg.... I've spent way too much so far... I can't stop myself lol...
ReplyDeleteWOW. Beyond unexpected and totally appreciated. There were quite a few armors I was waiting to see in the D-Arts line, the thought of getting them in D-Arts scale AND with an updated classic style is very exciting. This is SO great.
ReplyDeleteNo more piece of junks figures at all. No more!
ReplyDeleteI loved the mega armor series model kits during the 90's and early 2000's, they were awesome and the definitive megaman figures back then. I'm looking forward to Bandai bringing them back, let's just hope it's not going to be mainly x and zero variants even though I would really like a figure of the x2 armor.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, I didn't see that coming. The Mega Armor models were my favorite, mostly because they were the best looking models available at the time. I remember finding them on some obscure site for dirt cheap and bought so many. I still have a few. This was also the only series I recall that produced the Ride Armor. Glad to see a new line coming from it. It'd be nice to see some Boss love besides Sigma and Vile too.
ReplyDeleteI used to buy these all the time from toysnjoys.com. That website was the shit.
Deletehey dude still have any model kits? if so would you mind posting some pics on my toy group https://www.facebook.com/groups/422908281190053/
DeleteNah, sorry man. Along with my original Marvel vs Capcom 1 toy bundle with Mega Man and War Machine, those old model kits have been lost to time.
DeleteI used to buy mine from ActionAce. It's since been out of business for some time.
Deletecolor me intrigued! I had endless fun with the Mega Armor Series!
ReplyDeleteIt looks pretty sick so far, but why does every X figure need all these nonsense panel lines in his armor? Just make it look like the source material.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but it looks fucking cool, and we already have several toys with the original design.
Deleteagreed. sure, the NXEDGE has some pretty ugly panel lines, but the special design for truforce was a welcome change and this looks great too. can't wait to see where they go with this line.
DeleteHow exactly is it better than ever if they're just going to be pumping out more X figures, and abstract variants at that.
ReplyDeleteAnd speaking of the ill-fated D-Arts line, how long before Zero sinks this endeavor?
Funny how Zero keeps spelling death for toy lines. It's almost like he's not as popular as he used to be.
DeleteTo be fair, is the "Mega Man Zero" mold that usually kills these lines; and you have to admit that design was never as popular, even for me, a huge Zero fanboy, it took a lot for that style to finally grow on me, MMX Zero is as popular as ever.
DeleteOh my gosh. This is really cool. I loved the mega armor series! Hope they have more lined up. can't wait to see!
ReplyDeleteIf its not too much, I might get this, but I need to see the finished figure first.
ReplyDeleteI need an X figure to go with my D-arts Zero figure, and D-arts X cost a lot now.
Meh. I'd rather get some more D-Arts.
ReplyDeleteSame, but it doesn't seem like that's happening, and the old ones have way higher prices then before.
DeleteIts cool that they are reviving the line, but I think people would much rather want the D-Arts line to be revived and continued instead.
ReplyDeleteNah, no way. The D-Arts line was cool, but it's nowhere near as fun as building a model kit.
DeleteI can't help but agree. I always prefer quality over quantity, but this time around I'd rather have as many releases as possible, and that can happen with model kits. That, and it's not like the kits will be terrible, I'm sure they'll look fine next to the D-Arts figures.
DeleteAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
ReplyDeleteI BOUGHT AND BUILT THE SHIT OUT OF THESE WHEN I WAS A KID!!!!
I NEVER THOUGHT THEY WOULD BRING IT BACK AND MAKE IT BETTER AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Oh snap. Let's hope it gets even some of the variation the old Mega Armor series did.
ReplyDeleteI am excited. I hope the series has a decent price and good selection. They were "models" more than they were figures since you build them yourself.
ReplyDeleteI customized the piss out of these figures, making a bunch of unreleased ones, even using 3D printing to make my own parts. I can't wait to see what I can do with the Giga Armors.
I like the new take on X's design, which makes him look real-er. I'm not crazy about the hip joint, hands and eyes, though...
I don't think we have to worry too much about price; the commercial appeal of the model kit is that the consumer does the assembly, which saves the company a significant amount of labor cost. These certainly must be less expensive than their D-Arts counterparts.
DeleteThe main factor for me is -- as you said -- selection, since I will be less inclined to order models of figures which I've already purchased 3-4 times already, like vanilla X and Zero.
Do you have photos of figures wearing your 3D-printed armor parts? I'd love to see what you've come up with!
This is still being designed. It has not been "built". The buster was, though.

Here is a mod to X8 Zero, using 3D printed adjustable wrists, custom Knuckles and more squared shoulder pads

Nice work on those 3D customs anon!
DeleteThanks.
DeleteI got two other ongoing projects that are still incomplete too...
Adjustable head, I want to make the eyes removable for easier painting.

Also, I hate those polycaps on the elbows cause they keep breaking.
So I modified the arms to have new cap connectors, as well as adjustable wrists.

Damn, and I thought I'd have to live a life of not getting to experience the Mega Armor series forever.
ReplyDeleteThe only Mega Armor toy I own would be the Ride Armor from X3, and that was pre-assembled with all the parts....
...!!!
That the Vile ride armor prototype slated for the D-Arts line, could it see the light of day through this??
You lucky son of a gun, I wish I had that ride armor. Pretty sure the 4-inch Nel X can fit in that thing.
DeleteOhoho, it certainly could, seeing how even the D-Arts figures fit too, provided you detach their foot parts first.
DeleteHere's some photos of Vile using it.

This could make me start up painting again...
ReplyDeleteMy wallet!
ReplyDeleteo___o that's pretty awesome
ReplyDeleteLooks great. Can wait to get Zero. :D
ReplyDeleteFreaken annoying ... I'm so sick of figures man.
ReplyDeleteNo disrespect to Bandai, don't let my bitterness stop you from doing god's work. It's not your fault other media of Mega Man is either gone to crap or just gone in general.
It's actually model kit. While cheaper than figures, you can freely customize them just like Gundam kits. It offers more room to creativity like maybe giving him a metallic finish, weathered battered up finish, alternate colors, etc. Well Mega Man isn't dead yet if CAPCOM hasn't officially stated so.
DeleteNever expected the Mega Armour series to come back! :D I hope this time we can get Axl (think what you will of him; I've been waiting for a decent figure of him for YEARS and it feels odd to me that that hasn't happened yet).
ReplyDeleteThink there'll be some non-game armours in there as well, like in the old line?
Hope they bring the iX and Return X figures and the old armors since they where featured in the Mega Armor series.
ReplyDeleteBut i'm pretty sure they will only release one X figure and 20 Zero figures, because we don't get tired of those figures already.
When will they have the armor X wore in Megaman X command mission?
ReplyDeleteWhen will they make X with the armor he wore while on Giga city? That I would like to see!
ReplyDeleteMeijin once had said that Gunpla is Freedom. Now let's see how Giga Armor Series will get kitbashed with various Gunpla parts, thus giving X an entirely original new custom Armor.
ReplyDeleteImagine a custom Burning Gundam X armor
That's what these kind of toys are made for.
DeleteHoly fuck I'm so excited for this. It's been way too long. I spent a good amount of time in my vacation in asia looking for one of these, but no luck. Glad it's coming back.
ReplyDeleteIt appears that the armor bits have compartments that are on hinges. I wonder what those are for? And how they will translate to other characters?
ReplyDeleteThe title and verbiage of the post reads as a little misleading. Although "Giga Armor" homages the name of the aforementioned Mega Armor series, it doesn't look like it's a continuation of the line so much as a spiritual successor. These look to be much more articulated and possibly in the six-inch scale. The only similarity, if the name is to be believed, is that it will have modular armor pieces.
