The Nintendo Entertainment System is making a come back this Fall as a micro console. Today Nintendo announced the 'Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System'. It's a small NES that comes with 30 built-in games (save state compatible!), an HDMI cable, and a classic NES controller. The NES controller can even plug into a Wii Remote, so you can use it to play your Virtual Console games on Wii or Wii U.
Mega Man 2 is just one of 30 playable classics. See the full list after the jump.

No thanks. Just Megaman 2 in it ? I will pass and stick with real console and real carts instead.
ReplyDeleteNo Castlevania III or Ninja Gaiden II, huh? And in fact, apparently nothing beyond what? 1990? Credit where credit is due, though; it does have Final Fantasy and Kirby's Adventure. And even StarTropics! Not an awful selection, but certainly missing some of the better games... not to mention having sequels without the games that came before them.
ReplyDeleteYeah no Contra, really... the epitome of 2 player NES yeah OK Nintendo.
DeleteAlso the hell with Zelda 2 any other sequel to any other game that had a sequel on the console on that list would be better outside of FF2 or entirely different but excellent games like Blaster Master (a game that would benefit from this port), Shatter Hand or even Crystalis if in need of more Zelda in your life (and don't tell me you couldn't license that, SNK is super desperate for a comeback and whatnot).
Well... it does have the arguably-better sequel, Super C... but still. No one really remembers that game as much as the original, for some reason... Truth be told, I actually played Super C long before I played Contra. Kind of like how my first Kid Icarus game was actually Of Myths and Monsters on the Game Boy, ha hah.
DeleteSuper C is a Contra a game. Or were you specifically talking about the first one? If it's the latter, then I'm pretty puzzled myself as to why (the NES version of) that game has never gotten a re-release through either the Virtual Console or this.
DeleteAs for my two cents on this? It's a pretty neat concept, but if it's anything like those handheld/Plug-N-Play Sega Genesis consoles by AT Games, then it's bound to have some rather crappy sound quality, along with slightly unresponsive controls. Also, singling out Mega Man 2, and not even so much as acknowledging any of the other five? Really? Really? At this point, I wish I could say I was shocked.
@ Anonymous, Zelda II is pretty legit! That game is really fun.
Delete@Joseph Collins: I think SMB3 blows the first one away, but to have an assortment of NES classics that has 3 but not the original .... it's just not done.
Delete@Krazy Monkey: The latter.
@MegaNerd X: Yeah, I'll take the other legit games on the NES over it any day.
What this unit is trying to accomplish is to collect a series of well known classics and series under one roof so new generations can experience what we fossils rave about. Having that been said I think the selection is...okay? There's a lot of givens, but like others have mentioned some weird choices. I think it's odd that they don't have the first Double Dragon and only the second. As for Mega Man 2, it's Mega Man 2. For newcomers it's essential playing in the NES library. In this case, I think it makes sense. Mega Man 3 would have also been acceptable.
Deletedoes it play regular nes carts??
ReplyDeleteNope
DeleteMoney says it's just poor emulation.
Delete@Jet-striker
DeleteTo be fair, I've never really seen an NES game badly-emulated. Even back when Bloodlust Software's NESticle was the only game in-town (so many fond memories from two decades ago~), it emulated a lot of the most well-known games almost-perfectly.
Could at least allow a permanent virtual console downloader.
DeleteNo carts? What a wasted opportunity. I thought it was like those Brazilian Master System and Mega Drive consoles with over 30 games in the memory and allows you to use carts and other devices (except for Sega CD and 32X in Mega Drive's case, as its shape is different)
DeleteKeep in mind, if this thing had a lot of Mega Man games on it, it would devalue the Mega Man Legacy Collection - a recent commercial product of theirs.
ReplyDeleteIf people had to pick only one game from the first six, I imagine most would pick 2. I'd pick 4 or 5 myself, but 2's solid for the era.
