Capcom Japan Celebrates Mega Man's 28th With Stuff

Nothing says "happy birthday" quite like new merchandise, food and beverages. Stuff.

Freshly unveiled merchandise includes this stuff....

...and some of this stuff:

In Japan, fans can enter a drawing to win rare and out-of-print stuff...

And that's about it. The 28th anniversary seems to largely focus on tie-ups with Rockman Classics Collection. It makes sense, logistically. I mean it is pretty much the only "new" thing going on right now.

In closing, here's a little treat from Hitoshi Ariga:

  5. Happy birthday.

Shout outs to the Super Smash Bros. team for giving me my favorite Mega Man related gift of the past two console generations.

    1. I can't stand playing that game with Mega Man.

Just take that MM edit his mechanics slightly, and put him in a traditional style MM game that suits him, and that would be the perfect gift for me.

Other than that my gift is Ariga finally honoring the classics, albeit with a slightly rusty style it seems.

    2. That's too bad, but I understand it's not for everyone. I just love the way he plays and the sound and look of everything is great. In my opinion of course.

I don't know what you mean about the Ariga stuff though. I'll have to check that out.

    3. I like the way MM looks and sounds too, I just don't like the way he plays FOR SMASH. I think he plays fine for a traditional 2D platformer though. It's just that I don't want to be playing a traditional platformer while other people are playing a brawler is all I'm saying. It's like if they made Cloud so close to his original self that he had to wait to attack with an altered active time battle system.

What I mean by Ariga is up there in his twitter pic, I believe is his first time illustrating MM in MM's original design and art-style instead of his own.

    4. I really don't see how he plays like a traditional platformer. His movements would be very awkward for a platformer. He's just more focused on mid-range projectiles. One of the main reasons people find him awkward isn't because of the number of projectiles though, but mostly because basic attacks like his jab, forward tilt and neutral air themselves are projectiles, and the same one at that. Also, I'm just another anonymous, not the other one, if you're wondering.

I'm the first Anonymous, just to clear that up. It's okay for you to feel that way, I just disagree completely. I think Mega Man was incorporated beautifully into Smash. He is wholly unique in the game without having a unique mechanic (such as Cloud's Limit meter or Ryu's special inputs). I feel he fits right into the game. Agree to disagree, although I actually also agree that with a little modifying that Mega Man could fit into a more traditional Mega Man styled game as well. That's part of why I think the design of him in Smash is so great, because I feel he fits it very well while still remaining true to his roots. Again though, it's fine if you disagree.

Also thanks for clearing that up. That is pretty cool yeah. Though I do like Ariga's original style as well.

  6. I can really feel the apathy and cynicism from this post. FWIW I like it better than TMMN's endless optimism.

    1. Apathy is more dangerous than anything for a franchise, at least from what I've seen.

Some people get upset by the complaints people have about the way Capcom has handled the franchise, but at least when people are voicing their complaints they still care.

Once everyone moves past that and stops caring at all, that's when Capcom will have really messed up. Hopefully it doesn't get to that point.

    2. Clock is ticking. In any case Capcom will most likely aim for the younger audience exclusively, that's where the money and long-term planning is.

  7. Those stuffs would be nicer if one lived in Japan. However, a lot of this means nothing to those of us who can only watch others get these stuffs. It's like being that kid who wasn't invited to the party. =(

I'm mostly talking about the food. Everything else we can pay triple for cuz, y'know, import fees.

  8. Remember when Mega Man was a video game character, and not a merchandising tool\re-release husk of a shell? I really can't, it's been a while. Perhaps one day we'll get a new game. Not holding my breath though.

    Happy Birthday.

    1. Personally a new game would be nice, but not if it's garbage.

    3. Sure can. A repeat of Xover isn't gonna solve anything.

    4. Am I the only one who actually kinda liked XOver, until it dropped the ball during the late game (around World 9) and became Pay2Win?

    5. You're not alone Amir, it is just that the previous Anon is irrationally upset and blamed everything on XOver.
