Get Me Off the Moon Announces Legends 3 and Red Ash Campaigns

Four years ago today Mega Man Legends 3 was cancelled. To honor its memory, the folks at Get Me Off the Moon (aka 100,000 Strong for Mega Man Legends 3) are launching two campaigns for the occasion. One is aimed at reviving Mega Man Legends 3, and the other is a Red Ash awareness campaign. For the latter, GMOTM will be collaborating directly with Keiji Inafune.

Full details after the jump.

As described in the video, there are two campaigns:

"Operation Legendary List"

This campaign is aimed at MML3's revival. The idea is simple: tweet with the hashtag #ReviveMML3 to Sony's Gio Corsi (@giocorsi) and Adam Boyes (@amboyes), who helped bring the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter to life, and the official Capcom Twitter (@capcom_jp and/or @Capcom_Unity).
Sony recently stated that they were "building a list" of cult titles to help with crowdfunding, and we want to make sure that MML3 is on that list--in big, bold letters! We're really leaving this campaign open, though, so you're free to tweet to any company that you'd like to see help with MML3, such as Nintendo, CyberConnect2, or hey, even Microsoft if you want! Just remember to use the #ReviveMML3 hashtag.

To provide a little incentive, three prizes will be given away: a new, physical copy of the 8-bit Mega Man Legends 3 fan-game+soundtrack, a boxed Rockman DASH 1+2 Value Pack for PSP (new in box!), and a beadsprite of Barrett and Aero on their Fly Carrier.

"Rise From The Ashes" Contest

Our Red Ash campaign aims to promote Inafune's spiritual successor to the Legends series. While we don't think either Kickstarters for the project are in danger of failing, we think they could stand for an extra push, as well as more promotion. To that end, we've teamed up with Comcept and Keiji Inafune to bring you our "Rise From The Ashes" contest! To enter, all you have to do is tweet your Red-Ash-themed fan-art and music using the hashtag #RiseFromTheAshes. For those of you who don't use Twitter, you can send your entries to our email, getmeoffthemoon@gmail.com. We'll be using the GMOTM Tumblr to share your entries: bringbackmml3.tumblr.com. You may enter up to three different works per person.

As for prizes, Comcept will be giving three winners Red Ash shirts of their sizes signed by the lead dev members of the game, including Inafune himself. That's not where it ends, though! We're thrilled to announced that Keiji Inafune will actually be judging this entire contest himself!

The prize winners for  the "Operation Legendary List" will proceed one month from now, August 18th at 11:59PM PST. The "Rise From The Ashes" contest will run until July 31 at 11:59PM PST (i.e. the end of this month).

  1. As much as I hate being negative and as much as MML3's cancellation did really upset me...

It's just not going to happen, even with the prospect of a crowdfund. Legends is just too niche and unsuccessful of a sub-series for Capcom to reconsider, a company who is now sorely convinced that even the more familiar and reliable Classic series would not be successful. (Legacy Collection, the cartoon and comics are all the efforts of Capcom of USA, and their power is very limited. Don't expect actual new games for a long time.) Remember, Legends 3 was only ever considered because Inafune had to pester about it for years. Really wish the guy stayed, but even if he did, it might not have prevented its cancellation.

The DevRoom was also a major flop in how it was handled. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but when you're advertised a product and are made to think it will be happening when in reality the damn thing was never greenlit (effectively wasting A LOT of people's time), then there's some big problems. I would imagine with the amount of backlash Capcom received before and after the cancellation, they would not want to do another crowd effort.

And oh yeah, they fired the people behind the game didn't they? And reused the assets in a Japan-exclusive game. Even if Capcom were to revive Legends 3 (which they won't), it won't be the same as the previous attempt.

It's just not going to happen. The only thing that will come close is Red Ash. You have to accept one or the other.

    1. With the comic going on hiatus and the cartoon just being a glorified pitch at this point, things don't look too promising. I hate thinking like a realist, but truth is, the reality just isn't good.

    2. I didn't say things looked good, I only said that the comics, cartoon and collection were solely the efforts of Capcom of USA. Capcom of Japan has no involvement with those things. What I mean by that is, only CoA is interested in keeping Mega Man alive, however being that they are only a division of the parent company, there is only so much they can do on their own.

    3. Could I ask for a citation on that?

I didn't know Capcom of America was behind all of that. The comics, the collection and the animated series.

  2. One thing that always struck me is just how huge a departure Legends was from the Mega Man we knew. So much about it has no real equivalent character or basis elsewhere - the Mega Man name sometimes feels like it was just added to some completely different property in hopes the name association would see it sell (obviously, it did not).

Aside from a few character names, the main character primarily wearing blue, and being able to select a special weapon (that you can't freely swap on the fly when you're out on the field, sadly), there really isn't much "core" Mega Man gameplay. They didn't really adhere to what made Mega Man, well, Mega Man. As someone who has played all the games released in the series, I think they turned out just fine.

I'm more than okay with cutting out all likeness to an IP that may well be completely unrelated to the game it houses. I enjoyed the free-roaming run-and-gun and exploration, and you don't need to be called Mega Man Anything to get to enjoy that.

If I do donate it'll be towards the end of the campaign, but I hope they have a chance to at least make the prologue chapter and drum up further interest from there.

That's how I feel with Battle Networks. It could probably work just as well without the Megaman names and references. Fortunately for Capcom, that game series did sell well and got a few sequels out of it.

    2. No Mega Man Battle network had a crap-ton of likeness to Mega Man. The Majority of the cast were based on a majority of Mega Man characters. It is exactly what Mega Man would be in an alternate universe (which is what it is unlike Legends) with an RPG setting with a replacement of robotics with computer AI. IT IS the quint essential spin-off, it takes massive amounts of references and inspiration from it's source material and creates a different experience with it. Mega Man X Command Mission had very little in common with Mega Man X main series games (It had a completely individual side story that is hard to connect to the main one, mostly new characters, completely different gameplay etc), yet people still consider it a good spin-off.

To change Battle Network into Re Xe would be to change 100's of designs (because when they come together they are evidently based on Rockman designs), change a buttload of musical themes and names, and disregard a large part of it's lore. To change MML into Red Ash all you'd need to do is disregard it's lore connecting it to the classic time-line (which would be easy) color the main character's armor Red and not allow helmet upgrades (or change the design), change a few names and that is it, nothing else needs to be done.

  3. All these Legends 3 advocates really want is the rest of the story.
So rather than hold out for a game that will never happen, get Inafune to endorse two official doujinshi books. One where Volnutt marries Roll, one where he marries Tron Bonne. Then all their petty fantasies can be realized and we can all get back to focusing on Megaman-related matters that, well... matter.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Fans aren't mad because Volnutt's relationship is left open ended. Hell, that seems like the very last thing Capcom would do.

Fans want to see Volnutt get off the moon and to have the rest of the story told.

      Delete
    2. Depends on the fan. Legends is the only Megaman spin-off series that has a "harem anime" cast. And what harem anime doesn't have a faction of fans obsessed with shipping?

      Delete
    3. I'd like to know more about things like the origin of the Reaverbots myself.

There's more to stories than just whoever ends up getting married to whoever.

      Delete
    4. "Harem anime cast"? By your logic, Archie, Betty, and Veronica are a harem anime cast.

    5. I never bought into that whole getting off the moon bit, a lot of the time people create an immediate threat off of random things contained in the universe, but in reality the ending was rather lighthearted and comical.

Unlike ZXA which had a specific surprise plot villain that directly treated the world with a plan he plans to set in motion right then and there. Yet everyone is saying how much more a cliffhanger MML2 is than ZXA. I'm sorry but I'm not buying that BS. I even think X8 had a more curious and imminent issue needing to be resolved.

      Delete
    6. I guess you haven't seen the ending to Legends 2 in a while. It ends with Yuna talking about now there is nothing to keep the reaverbots and ancient ruins from activating and feared for the safety Roll and all the people on the planet below. The lightheart-ness of final scene doesn't change the fact that current world is in danger being overrun by kill underground robots.

      Delete
    7. What was destroying them before? Mega Man alone? No, the treat was not imminent, it was just a what will happen if hypothesis, and even then it wouldn't be a cliffhanger, just an open ended ending, as the ending clearly implies they will be rescued and even if you can't conceive of Mega Man getting back on a rocket (which is heavily implied from both the ending AND the the MML3 project concepts) than surely you can imagine that other diggers and bounty hunters like Barrett would act as a deterrent and barrier to random chaotic machines until the arrival of Mega Man/Yuna and such, since you know, from what we have seen they make quick work of Reaverbots, heck even Servbots make quick work of Reaverbots.

ZXA on the other hand has a villain specifically threatening to reset the entire world, this coming from a guy who imposed the civil laws and the foundation of living between humans and reploids. Not only do we not know what that means we do not know how he plans to effect change and was the antagonist behind most of the actions against the heroes and worse yet the main heroes are unaware of this and it ends on that note pin pointedly. If that is not the absolute epitome of a cliffhanger, I don't know what is. Mega Man X8 is even more mysterious in its ending, what happened to Axl could mean him being the new villain of X9 or something who knows ???

      Delete
    8. Also I'd like to add that a cliffhanger is not "there is stuff still left to be resolved" it is "something that ends in suspense" and I'm sorry but there was nothing suspenseful about Legends 2's ending, one of the reasons was specifically due to its lighthearted comical atmosphere and it heavily implying what would happen next.

    1. They're not mutually exclusive.
I've been to conventions with strong policies against the sale of bootleg or unlicensed merchandise, but do allow the sale of doujinshi. It sounds contradictory to me, but there's probably some legal exception I'm not aware of. I can't imagine how that could be unless they make minimal changes to names and likenesses (i.e. Rockman = BrokkuMan).

    2. I've been to conventions with strong policies against the sale of bootleg or unlicensed merchandise, but do allow the sale of doujinshi.

Because doujinshi by definition is self licensed material. What I don't get is how a Rockman Legends graphic novel can be both self licensed as a doujin and be officially licensed. Because the only officially licensed work that can be official is the ones licensed by Capcom, which would make it not a doujin.

I can't follow the logic on that at all.

Yukiko Kawanabe (Onimusha 2 & 3,Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, Mega Man & Bass, Mega Man Legends 1 & 2)
Naoya Tomita AKA Tom-Pon (Mega Man 1 2 5 & 6, Little Nemo: The Dream Master, Legendary Wings , UN Squadron)
Miki Kijima(Ducktales, Megaman Ledgend 1 &2, UN Squadron, Battle Network, 1943, Breath of Fire, and many more)
Manami Matsumae (I cant even fit the number of awesome games shes worked on Just google her.)
      Shusaku Uchiyama (From Resident Evil)

How is Mighty Nine, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, Soul Sacrifice Delta, Bugs vs Tanks, and ReCore considered mobile games?

  8. Here's my two cents:

If Inafune truly felt the urge and passion to continue Legends 3, within this four year span he would have surely been working on securing a deal with Capcom to do so. Just recently, he came out and said that he would still be interested in completing the game, IF Capcom approached him. Now you see, that isn't how it's going to work. Sure, there's probably bad blood still present between Capcom and Inafune, but as it stands, Inafune needs to be the one to persuade them. Instead, we now have the proposed Red Ash. It just seems like it was the easy way out, which it probably was. (That and pride.)

Let's be honest with ourselves. This generic Legends isn't what anyone wanted, nor should it have been proposed the way it has been. A very rough start, to be sure. This is also a catch 22 situation. If Red Ash is successful, there is pretty much no chance for Legends 3 ever happening. What would be the need for it? Comcept would be focused on their own "IPs". Furthermore, if Capcom sees Red Ash fail, they may interpret that as a red flag for Legends 3. (Of course, there's the chance if Red Ash succeeds, they'd work on Legends 3 as competition but I highly, highly doubt that.)

To sum it all up, if anything, Red Ash needs to be taken back to the drawing board and fused with Legends 3 somehow. I see great ideas and concepts, and that's probably because it's so akin to Legends. There needs to be an accord between the two companies to get this done. Plain and simple. In the meantime, Inafune and co. should focus on something entirely different.

    1. He already tried to offer that to Capcom. They declined. They would very likely do that again, bad blood or no bad blood.

    2. Capcom will never make a MML3, Especially since the Kickstarter fail. It proves that it would not sell, and no company is going to make something that does not sell. However I feel the reason it failed, was not because of fans, but because of three major issues.

No physical console versions. This is unacceptable and they still cant say what console this will be released on if any.

Trying to release a anime at the same time? Already too many hot kickstarters were running, and now there was two more who can take that seriously. The smart thing would have been to combine the two, and make a game with anime cut scenes.

Would waiting two months for the Mighty No 9 release been that bad. The company could have started work on Red Ash quietly, and maybe by that time had some game footage to show.

      Delete
    3. Last I checked, Inafune left Capcom while MML3 was in development. Finally, the game that he has been claiming since the very early 2000s he wants to make, is being made, and he jumps ship. Doesn't make a ton of sense.

Now, I'm not saying he should have stayed at Capcom, because it's not my place to do so, but you don't get to leave them and then after the game gets canceled then turn around and say "I'd still make it if they let me". That IMO is not passion to see the game get made, it's just tossing its fans a bone to stay in their good graces while you ask them for money to fund your own IPs.

      Delete
    4. ^Yeah but he didn't want to make Legends in the condition it was presented.

He was saving money to make the ideal Legends, with the unbearable pressure from his job and Legends fans crapping on him, along with his differences with company heads he decided to take the MML money he was saving to leave Capcom and go after other things but before he did that he decided to get a lesser MML3 in motion opening public involvement and just making the project known. He thought it was safe but as soon as he left and took all his influence and power at the company with him so did MML3 project.

In a way I'm kinda happy it got canned, I want a true 9 million (at the time Keiji made that estimate maybe more now with the newer tech) dollar MML3 on HD consoles, like it was originally envisioned ....

      Delete
    5. In response to first anon, yes, I am aware he asked once before. If he let that one "No." be the end of it, then that's on him. He should have kept on them. I remember him asking before he had any projects of his own under his belt. Now with Comcept on the apparently rise, he has projects to show for himself, essentially a "resume", or "evidence" that he still has what it takes. Not like Capcom wouldn't know that already, but still. They're very weird.

I think he if brought the concept for Red Ash to Capcom and said listen, I have this and would like to restart Legends 3 with this foundation laid, they may be more likely to accept. I mean, if Sony is behind Shenmue 3, then I don't see why the indie scene should be a potential wall between them. Legends 3 can and should happen. There's just people in the way. People with conflicts of interest. Inafune needs to keep on them if he really wants to please the fans. Capcom should also see the passion likewise.

      Wishful thinking all the while.

      Delete
    6. If you're saying Inafune should present Red Ash to Capcom and ask for them to co-develop it and reskin the entire thing as an actual Legends game, that won't happen either.

      Delete
    7. Capcom Is never going to get behind MegaMan Legends 3. In any form what so ever, Red Ash Kickstarter shows that no one wants it. Sorry the fans have spoken with the only voice Capcom cares about $$$$, and MegaMan Legends fans give no $$$$ for Red Ash.

      Delete
    8. I am not at all saying Inafune should present Red Ash to them in which to co-develop. I'm saying he should show them what he's concocted with the Red Ash project and use that to revive and add-on to Legends 3.

In other words, he would be converting Red Ash into content to build on to Legends 3, using the concepts, worlds, towns, etc he's created to expand upon it. Capcom would be more inclined to accept his proposition if he hit the ground running, hence, using all the material he has so far for Red Ash.

And to the last Anon, are you a troll or what? Have you been reading anything I or anyone else has said? The Kickstarter is a dud because of the way it was presented. That, paired with the fact that no one wants "Red Ash", they want "Mega Man Legends 3" and aren't willing to settle for a substitute, just because the big wigs cant work something out.

I'll admit, I gave Red Ash $5. That's all I'm willing to give, considering all of the above.

      Delete
  9. Really. You know, if anyone should be rallying against Red Ash, I'd think it would be the Get Me Off The Moon folks. I'm not sure what their angle is here... Extending the olive branch of peace or something? ... or have they legitimately fallen for the nostalgia scam that Inafune is pulling? I really hope that's not the case. I'd be very disappointed, if so.

    1. I've been following their FB page as of late, and there is definitely a significant amount of 100k/GMOTM folks who are not supporting Red Ash. I think the admins are trying to walk a fine line by doing both a Red Ash and "revive MML3" campaign to keep both factions happy.

I'm not jumping behind Red Ash personally, and this is coming from a lifelong MM fan and someone who loved Legends. Those who are pushing Red Ash as MML3 or "the closest thing we'll ever get" come across to me more as fans of the open world, anime-style design of Legends more than the story or the characters themselves. Most seem to be anime fans above MM fans, seem to be younger and were introduced to MM in the franchise's later years. None of those things apply to me so it doesn't surprise me that I can't understand their reasoning.

      Delete
    2. Joseph, that's enough. You honestly believe Inafune is a scammer by stealing money from his fans? You really have lost faith in Inafune.. Inafune is doing us a favor by bringing us spirital successors to MegaMan and you're giving him a hard time. Seriously, wait until Mighty No. 9 comes out before you jump to conclusions.

      Delete
    3. @Musashi
That will be impossible seeing how this campaign will end before MN9 releases. Also just how low you have to keep on accepting this "spiritual successor" thing? If Inafune make a spiritual succesor next to Battle Network series without first release the previous kickstart game let along show any gameplay clip or concrete non-changing of the spiritual succesor Battle Network, are you just going to support it? That;s blind fanboyism...

      Delete
    4. Excuse me? Blind fanboyism? I have been a fan of Inafune ever since I first played MegaMan X on the SNES and I always thought he was a good director. All I see from the commentators in this blog is acting like immature brats just because they are upset with Capcom killing their beloved series and they're already bashing Inafune for making a spiritual successor to MegaMan. You're giving the man a hard time and I bet other sites are laughing at how childish the MegaMan fanbase has become because they wanted new MegaMan games. It's pretty pathetic if you ask me.

      Delete
    5. Do we not have a reason to be upset? Is it really a case of being "immature"? It's pathetic for fans to pour their emotions out to a company with a passion because they want the company to create more of what they love? They're at fault? Mega Man fans are childish for wanting more Mega Man games? Read that back.

I don't think other sites are laughing, I think they probably feel for the fanbase, even if they're not fans themselves. I'm not sure you understand the situation here. This is, primarily, about Red Ash. Pretty much everyone was fine with Mighty No.9. I support it and am eager to see what Inafune has done. It's just with Red Ash, it seems as if he's truly given up fighting for the rights to continue working on the Mega Man franchise. That and how it's been pitched.

      Delete
    6. To the first Anon, assuming you also meant me, I am actually a big Mega Man fan, and anime is not something I'm into anymore. Not for many years. Not everyone who says "Red Ash will be the closest thing" applies to that. If it were my choice, I would very much prefer that Legends 3 be revived over Red Ash.

But that's just not going to happen, it's an unfortunate reality that I accept. That is why I say you have to "accept one thing or the other", especially when you consider how much Red Ash mimics Legends to a T. It's not just another anime-inspired open world game, it quite literally copies directly from Legends.
      - Dr. Jerk.

      Delete
    7. Sorry. I understand how you guys feel, but when the backlash of Mighty No. 9 and Inafune being accused of scamming people (Points at Joseph Collins) is what drives me up the wall. I mean, Inafune is a honest director and he's making Mighty No. 9 for us. Sure, he could have waited until Mighty No. 9 is out, but when people want him to fail, that was low.

      Delete
    8. Nobody here wants Inafune, or Comcept, to fail. That's why so many have gotten pissed off at the way his game projects have been handled and managed. People just want to see them excel at this, and want their money's worth. They just want them to do their best. There's nothing wrong with wanting that. But there have been many roadblocks and other issues faced along the way that have dampen that. The Becker forums, for instance, have left quite a lot of people bitter. (I can't really speak up for them though as I wasn't part of that, but it's something I very frequently hear about.) So as a result of that, their feedback on the beta hasn't been heard. And because of that, there will likely be extremely few differences between the demo and the full game, which is really unfortunate because MN9 should be the best game it can be. Not really Inafune's or Comcept's fault, but they should have chosen their forum mods better.

The fact that Red Ash was launched as a Kickstarter before MN9's release have also bothered many people. Inafune however said in an interview with USgamer that game companies never stop developing and that MN9 is already finished, giving them the time to focus on Red Ash. (Nice interview btw, surprised it wasn't reported here) I am not trying to defend him though, just shedding some light on the matter. Still, it might have been better for them to wait a little just to soften the controversy blow.

Normally I would agree waiting for the game to come out already, but I've watched videos of the finished game and it honestly doesn't look that special. I'll still play just to find out myself, but I don't have very high hopes. I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than get my hopes up.

    9. @Dr. Jerk

I seen positive feedback from news sites on Mighty No. 9 and people are looking forward to it. And you're being negative about it and saying it won't be good? Jesus, there are other games than MegaMan to enjoy like Mario, Zelda, Tales, Final Fantasy (Namely, the future FF7 remake) and Pokemon to enjoy. MegaMan isn't some god and the fanbase is not a cult that blindly worships him and be hostile to fans who don't play the MegaMan games. Get it together people...

I have never once said that Mega Man is a godly franchise, and lately I've been enjoying other franchises a lot more than Mega Man. I said that no one here wants Inafune to fail which is why we're so critical, and you turn around and peg me as a Mega Man worshiper.

      A+ man.
