Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 Announced

Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 is indeed happening. The good word comes from the official Gunvolt Twitter account following the opening of Inti Creates' FanFesta 2105 event. The game's website has gone live but it's a bit topsy-turvy at the moment due to heavy traffic.

In the meantime, Famitsu has a first look at a brand new character (above). Gunvolt 2 will hit the Nintendo 3DS later this year.

More details as they come.

  2. I'm so glad. Looks like fans really enjoyed the first one! Hopefully there's also a mini game...

    1. That is what people said about Mega Man, that or Capcom was milking it. I honestly think these people just love making these games, and they appreciate their niche audience.

Don't take these for granted if you like them, is my advice.

    2. There's always a risk of milking games. Even if fans like them, if you rush them out, there can be consequences, specifically when quality control goes out the window.

I don't doubt there's passion left in this industry, but it's never bad to be aware.

    1. There has been tons of news on No.9, the game is still coming around April as they said from the very first day.

  7. This is definitely the quickest I've heard of any game getting a sequel, ever. The first one only came out, like, back in August, which was only about six months ago. Not that I'm complaining or anything.

    1. I think the all time record holder is "What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord!?" which had a sequel announced THE DAY the first game came out.

  9. The first game was really solid with very interesting mechanics in play.

I hope they do away with the material grinding and instead focus on giving us an experience balanced around what the character can already do, not around what they might be able to do in the future after replaying stages a lot.

  11. I really hope they revamp the system in some way. Azure Striker Gunvolt had a lot of potential, but it felt rushed with some poor execution. Things that could have easily been fixed was the poor enemy variety and level design. Nothing felt challenging due to GV's high HP combined with Prevasion (which can be unequipped, but it's still there). The enemies mostly functioned the same way and were easily dispatched by the overpowered Energy Field since rockets/bombs/etc couldn't get through. It also doesn't help that enemies are recycled way too much between levels.

Another problem I had was the difficulty. It wasn't just easy, but it enabled a ton of mechanics that trivialized a lot of the difficulty in the game. Prevasion itself is obtained from the start and the Reincarnation anthem is essentially the Golden Leaf that let's you breeze the level. The only reason you'd want to do better in a level is to get more items at the end, but those crafting materials essentially make the game easier anyways, so what's the point? Bosses were made in a way that as long as you have the energy field up, their attacks were nulled. The only bosses that may pose a threat were Coppen and Nova since they had mechanics to punish derp strategies. They really need to balance the energy field because not only is it your only means of attacking, but it also doubles as a shield. If you weren't allowed to shoot tags while the energy field was up, this could have mitigated the problem, but who knows.

It would have been cool if every boss dropped a different gun that affected tagging, bullet arcs, field shape, EP Cost, etc. Instead we got a couple guns unlocked by completion that were either very situational/useless (Mizuchi, Technos, Vasuki) or outclassed by other weapons (Cerberus vs Naga). In short, if the weapons were balanced better, this could have easily been fixed.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Gunvolt. It just never lived up to experiences I had with MMZ or MMZX. It felt a bit cheap in comparison with all the recycled enemies and poorly balanced mechanics. I really want to believe they learned from their mistakes and make ASG2 more robust and polished, but it sounds like they're pushing these games out ASAP.

  13. I may be a bit of a negative nancy here, but...

How is this related to Mega Man, aside that it's one of Inafune's new IPs and the gameplay is basically a direct rip of MMX/MMZero playstyles?

There are other games being made by indie companies that are even more obvious, I don't see them getting mentioned. (20XX for example.. I mean seriously, one red, one blue, blue bot uses a gun the red one a laser sword.... c'mon now.)

Can we keep it related to MM? I kinda don't care what Inafune is doing. I know I'm a weak voice and not popular opinion, but MN9 and AG are NOT Mega Man.

    1. So this has been my methodology for a little while: coverage of titles from former Mega Man staff that relate to and/or carry the "spirit/tone/theme" of Mega Man. It's not limited to just Inafune; I've previously covered the Mega Man-inspired indie title 'Target Acquired.' Manami Matsumae is handling the soundtrack on that one.

I've covered fan-games in the past and, admittedly, they fall through the cracks sometimes. It's a one man operation here.

    2. Your updates are appreciated Protodude. Especially since there really hasn't been much Mega Man news outside of merchandising, mobile apps, and Smash.

    3. Protodude your updates are greatly appreciated! My only source for gunvolt is Facebook, and that can get buried fast. Its nice to have a one stop shop for my game news. Thanks for all you do!
