Mighty No. 9 Update - Beck Gets a Fresh Coat of Paint

Today's Mighty No. 9 update brings Art Director Shinsuke Komaki's package design into the spotlight. A fine looking piece, no doubt, but there's something curious going on in the middle. Beck is looking a tad different.

Revealed on today's backer update, our hero's armor, from this point on, will sport a white coat of paint. Director Koji Imaeda explains the change:

"From the very beginning we designed Beck to have a neutral, grey base, with the idea of wanting to make something completely new and unique.
But development soldiered on, and as we approached the last leg, we started looking closer at Beck. As a protagonist that could absorb the abilities of his siblings and take on various forms, our image of his appropriate color shifted from “neutrality” to “containing all possibilities”... and since white is a combination of all colors of light, we felt that would actually suit his character better! Hence, we went with the coloring change."

For all intents and purposes, I think it looks rather spiffy. The grey was getting a little drab for my tastes. And hey, now Beck will be easier to see against dark backgrounds!

  2. With every update, I grow just a little more pissed-off. I know I've seen that exact cover used for something before...

That aside, Beck looks a little nicer in white, but honestly, the change is pretty negligible.

    1. Battle Network 4 in japan used that art layout for the game cover for the navis that represented all the DoubleSouls

    2. That kind of composition is common in a lot of Japanese media.

Ah... It might have been EXE 4 where I saw it first, but Anon, you're right. That's probably a really common style.

  3. Ew, White beck. Do not want.

Did they change his color because they were afraid Capcom would blame them of copying Mega Man with a blue protagonist?

    1. Old Beck was grey; not blue.

You should check your eyes, most likely, the change was made because Grey was hard too see against darker backgrounds in the game, not because of some legal issue.

    2. I'm sure I just magically saw his hands being blue as well?

    3. Hi9s hand was blue with grey yes. it didnt really work that well, and making it white works better with the rest of his color scheme. otherwise there's no white spread on his arms.

    1. because having the main character centered with 8 antagonists portrayed in segmented sections of the background was first done there right? Not a staple at all of anime/manga at all right?

    2. Yeah, because that was such a unique, one-of-a-kind concept and design to begin with, right? A sectioned off space with character faces and the main character front and center. No way anybody's ever thought of that before or since without ripping off those EXE covers. /sarcasm

Bunch of morons up in here.

    3. If this is a ripoff, why doesn't it have Beck's face in the pic like Hub's and why is Beck's pose in the No9 artwork different from Lan's pose in the EXE one?

  6. Kinda reminds me of what that new "Max Steel" looks like. Might clash what with the two being television shows and all. I still like the overall design though. http://www.cartoonnetworkasia.com/minisite/max-steel/tools/img/meet_max_steel.jpg

  7. TBH, I didn't even notice until it was pointed out. I agree that the white is better though. He looks a little more slick now.

  9. Look at Beck Man, his colors matched with Inafune's hair!

  10. Looking snazzy, I like it! It helps to bump the contrast and bring out all of Beck's colors.

  11. Hmm, i like it more now, the old color pallete was strangely tiring to the eyes. This is way better.
