Archie Confirms Mega Man/Mega Man X Crossover Event

By way of Destructoid, Archie Comics have officially confirmed Mega Man and Mega Man X are teaming up for a four-part storyline titled "Dawn of X." The event kicks off with issue #37.

According to editor Paul Kaminski and Ian Flynn, the crossover won't provide the end-all, be-all answer to the missing Classic/X link; rather, they hope to provide fans with "clever storytelling tools to link the franchises in a way that doesn't fill any gaps best left to the fan's imagination."

More details on the project are expected to arrive shortly. For now, you can head over to Destructoid and read up on a few additional words from Kaminski and Flynn. Check out the covers while you're there, too.

  1. Look for the Megaman 4 adaptation in 2015 (if the book survives that long).

    1. Let's crunch some numbers here shall we?

X Cross Over starts in May, will be four issues.

Mega Man 3 will likely start after and be four issues (since Archie loves 4 part trades).

Assuming no non-game storylines are done it will be followed by Rockman World 2 according to the anniversary issue. And that's assuming they don't do a storyline to introduce the Mega Man Killers and Genesis Unit first.

Then finally Mega Man 4. So, assuming Archie has no more crossovers and no original storylines they could, in theory, get Mega Man 4 started by May 2015.

    2. Cry more, your tears are entertaining. Do you even understand how comics work? Why should Archie rush through the games proper?

I suppose if they did rush through and then started adding material "after the canon" you would still be whining that they were adding material.

  3. You know what, I think if Capcom did a Classic/X crossover game done RIGHT(aka PLATFORMER), then it would be enough to revitalize the series.

As it stands though I'm really looking forward to this.

  4. On one hand, I'm still impressed at how well the Spaz and Bates have replicated the MM artstyle.
On the other, that's more or less a traceover of the artwork from Maverick Hunter X.

  8. At this point, I'm pretty sure that Archie's lost their focus with this series. I mean I know there's going to be some downtime between actual game storylines, but come on... When did the Mega Man 2 arc even end? 2011?? Early 2012?? I can't even count the Ra Thor/Breakman thing as being "game-related" with how original it was done. And on top of that, they technically skipped over the first Game Boy game in their efforts. And the crossover with Sonic the Hedgehog didn't even take place in the current timeline, as far as I'm aware. They're just hopping around all willy-nilly at this point!

It's not to say I haven't enjoyed the comic... But like... I think Archie needs to re-prioritize their comic a little.

    1. You're not allowed to complain about the comic Professor Mega Man in disguise.

      (That was sarcasm)

    2. Meh who cares. It's definitely breaking up the repetitiveness of the 8 bosses then Wily castle structure the games have constantly. Also remember they have to explain why the original 6(yes remember Oil and Time aren't in the gameboy titles) began to work for Wily again. Which is honestly more trouble than needed.

Besides if it means guys like Punk or Quint get entire runs dedicated to fleshing them out then by all means I'm ok with. I don't want to see the games straight adapted in this case because of how much they repeat and how little there is to it.

    3. I'd be down with Wily building replicas of the Lightbots to ruin their reputation for a GB adaption.

    4. @Anon2: Good writers can tell an engaging story in a structured continuous theme throughout a series without it being redundant. The 8 Robot Masters don't have to be introduced or defeated in the exact same way every time. Their encounters, personalities, importance, effects on their universe, back stories, fight scenes don't have to be homogenous. It's up to the writer to keep these things interesting, it's been done before.

Oh and by the way most of the time there are 8 Robot Masters with different move sets, character designs, stages, music, weapons to collect from them, which all benefit a good MM game if done right. If they are repetitive it is do to the boring(repeat) character, stage, music, weapon designs themselves not the very essence of 8 or a Wily castle.

For example, Capcom could make 8 stages in one game that is short and recycles old ideas and is overall mediocre. Then make a nicely length 8 stages full of creativity, great weapon interaction, enemies and I guarantee they will feel like completely different games. That is because it's not always the concept that's the problem but the execution.

  9. I'm totally digging the cover artist's rendition of the X crew. It's dead-on for the X5-7 promo art.

I also like how the Classic cast seems to be inspired by Hideki Ishikawa's promo illustrations.
