Inafune Would Be Happy To Make A Spiritual Mega Man Legends Successor

As promised, here's Rashed's interview with Keiji Inafune from the IGN convention in Bahrain. Due to limited time, he was only able to ask Inafune three questions. Nevertheless, Rashed managed to pop the big one: now that we've seen Mighty No. 9, do you think we'll see a Mega Man Legends spiritual successor?

Inafune happily answered the query, speaking through his translator:

"Yes, he would really like to make Mega Man Legends, it's one of his favorite games. He'd like to but he can't at the moment. If he could make a game like it he would be very happy. Like this current Kickstarter, if he was able to do something like that, make a Kickstarter, get people to back it and use that funding source to make a game like that he'd be happy to do it."

In all, this is a juicy tidbit if you're a fan of the series. Mind you, Inafune's house is currently hard at work developing Mighty No. 9, among other projects. I think it would be quite a while before we see a second Kickstarter. But hey, you never know.

  1. Not a surprising answer, but still good to hear.

Now that he left Capcom, chances of Legends 3 being released dropped from 20% to god knows how much. (0,00X%?) Meanwhile, we call only enjoy the 3 games (excluding mobiles, although I'd still like to see full footage of 5 islands, beginning to end) and the few similar games, like Alundra 2, Tail Concerto, Solatorobo, ... (others?) I wonder how a Mighty DASH 9 Free Running RPG would be.

  2. If they do make a Spiritual-MML Kickstarter, we definitely need to have that entire 100,000 Strong For MML group back it up

  3. What if they don't want a " spiritual successor", what if they want the real thing more?

    1. I have to agree with this. I personally want LEGENDS 3. Not 'It's close, but in the end just a copy' I sadly feel the same way about Mighty 9. It looks like a neat game but in the end: It's NOT MegaMan.

  4. How is inquiring about a spiritual successor to Megaman Legends "popping the big one"? You make it sound like another Legends-ish game is at the top of every Megaman fan's wish list. Trust me, it's not.

If you asked every Megaman fan "If you could have the Megaman game of your dreams, what would it be?", less than 30% of the answers would involve the Legends series. I guarantee it.

    1. This was the "big question" Rashed personally wanted to ask.

    2. So it's less of an interview and more like one fan's personal inquiries?

That's fine. A shame that he could only ask three questions, but it does seem like he shouldn't have blown it out of proportion. He might have jumped the gun here.

    3. Well, we were hoping it was going to be a full interview. We even gathered questions from other people. Didn't pan out that way.

  5. I don't think Legends fans wanted Legends 3 for the gameplay, I'm pretty sure they wanted it for the characters.

    1. It seems like the reaction here is to that effect. But I for one been saying the opposite for years. At least since I played the games back in 2007. No game plays with the parameters Mega Man Legends 1 and 2 do. Sure upgrade Range/Damage/Ammo/Special actually became a standard of shooters, and getting new weapons from chests and or new subweapons from a support character has been seen in other action adventure games. But the variable weapon parts that you can change on the fly to change strategy mid-fight didn't. More than anything with the desire to see a sequel; I've wanted a game to follow up on that mix and match weapon system and maintain or multiply the exploration based progression.

I don't have any hate for the story or characters. But I like Rock Volnutt and Roll Caskett about as much as Rock and Roll Light. I simply don't care any more about the characters in Legends than I do with any other Mega Man series. And I've seen minimal complaints on Mighty Number 9 having them clearly being replaced with Beck and Call. I also don't see anything special about the setting of the Legends games. What with each game having wildly different cities/settlements/ruins on different islands that are completely disconnected from one another in sociology and design philosophy.

But even if no one else present agrees with my stance. Would you all rather the attempt not even be made if it's not actually Mega Man Legends? Is the unbranded portion of the game such a secondary appeal stacked next to a bipolar teenage girl who dresses by committee, a baby in battle armor, and a man with no inside voice, and lego knockoffs that ride missiles at you?

  6. He needs to get into talks with Capcom about licensing, specifically the Legends portion in this case, to see Mega Man Legends 3 through. End of story.

He would effectively be a third party developer, like Inti was. Don't see a problem with that, aside from the principle that he has to go that route. But if he wishes to still create Mega Man games, that's the only route.

    1. He already tried to make an offer before MML3 was cancelled but got turned down 3 years ago: http://www.rockman-corner.com/2011/09/rumor-capcom-denied-inafunes-attempt-to.html

  7. Hah Capcom had blocked posting these links to their facebookpage, certain mm keywords and keiji inafune and his comcept...talk about damage control...

  8. Not that I wouldn't be interested in watching Inafune try, but I lack confidence in how well the "spiritual successor" approach would work. I already find it questionable with Classic-to-M#9, and compared to Classic, Legends sells far more on its characters and far less on its play mechanics.

  9. I've got mixed feelings about a spiritual successor to Legends, since it does sell more on the characters and story than the mechanics. Anyone who knows me well knows that I'm hooked on these games strictly because of the Bonnes. Of course, quirky villain trios are about a dime a dozen, so yeah. It could really go either way.

They'll probably wind up being less mixed once Mighty No. 9 comes out and I can see for myself how close that one was to the original Mega Man. As it stands, I haven't really got much of a gauge for how far of a departure it'd be.

Anyway, just as a hypothetical, would I back that? Yes. Would I back that with an unusually large sum of money? Probably. Would I sell my soul for it and kill puppies and like the end product anywhere near as much as I like Mega Man Legends? Doubtful. I don't think I have the energy left in me to like any game as much as I like Mega Man Legends. And I'd probably just spend the duration of the game looking for parallels between the end result and the Legends series.

Maybe I'd be more attached to the concept if I had a shot at auditioning to voice act as Mega Man's expy in a spiritual successor. I'd be down for that.

  10. Tuttle's legendary travels could be adopted by Comcept...

  11. I like Legends. A spiritual successor of sorts would be something I would be interested in, even if it's its own thing and not linked to Mighty No. 9 and the like.

But also, I can't help but shake my head at those wanting Legends 3 specifically. I know there's some still feeling a bit sore over its cancellation, but the reality of things dictates that Capcom will never go back to it. A spiritual successor would be the best compromise and essentially good enough, if it even does happen.

  12. Oh for the love of...

I wish people would fucking leave Inafune alone about Rockman. He's moved on.(More or less.) Why can't you? You want DASH 3? Bug Capcom.
