According to the above teaser from Jasco Games' Facebook, the officially licensed Mega Man board game Kickstarter will be launching soon. How soon? Well, I think it's safe to assume sometime around the end of Mighty No. 9's campaign. So, maybe, end of the weekend?
We'll keep an ear out. In the meantime, check out our past Mega Man board game coverage here and here. Stay tuned!
Update: I think we need to go over a few things again...
1) Jasco already has the license to develop the board game. It's a done deal. The Kickstarter is intended to provide us with a higher quality product. For example, Jasco would prefer to make a set of Mega Man player pieces with different colors and poses. Funding would help them obtain the materials/assets to make that happen.
Even if the Kickstarter fails, the board game will still be made. However, fancier components like colored player pieces won't be happening. Keep in mind, Jasco is a rather small company.
2) The Kickstarter is not some last-minute retaliation against Mighty No. 9. We've known about the board game and its accompanying Kickstarter before Mighty No. 9 was announced. Matter of fact, Jasco originally wanted to launch the KS in early September. Naturally, they chose to avoid competition.
3) "Pending Capcom Approval" refers to the IMAGE in the teaser, not the whole project. It even says "Images Not Final, Pending Capcom Approval."
More news soon.
Update 2: Jasco has put up an official FAQ about the project. Give it a read if you need additional clarity.

They were wise to delay it from their "early September" plans they announced last month, for obvious reasons.
ReplyDeleteIf they were actually wise they wouldn't have made a fucking BOARD GAME, and expect US to foot the bill.
DeleteYou realize the game is still being made regardless of the kickstarter right? They technically don't need US to "foot the bill", rather they're using it to gauge interest and even include extra features and components given enough interest. Not every company is a multi-million dollar successful company.
Delete"Even if the Kickstarter fails, the board game will still be made. However, fancier components like colored player pieces won't be happening."
Ha, I don't know who to donate to anymore... Beck, or Megaman?
ReplyDeleteIt's easy to decide: Support people who actually CARE about Megaman, or continue to suck Capcom's dick thinking they'll surely reward you sooner or later.
DeleteThat depends, do you want a videogame or just more merchandise?
DeleteI'd play a MM board game, but I'd take a MM videogame instead, anytime.
M#9 is already funded anyway, so you may support this if you feel like it with no remorse.
TaurusOxford: What makes you think there aren't people at Jasco that care about Mega Man? Or are you under the assumption that Capcom themselves make all the licensed products? =/
DeleteSupport Mega Man by supporting a thinly disguised clone of Mega Man made by another company started by people who used to work on Mega Man. Makes perfect sense.
DeleteBy all means, call fans who also want the real thing Capcom's dick suckers and go back to the days when there was no merchandise. That way we can have no video games AND no merchandise and people will just forget about Mega Man. 9_9
Considering that MM11 would be as lackluster as MM10, and MMX9 wouldn't get the proper Sci-Fi/evolution of A.I. plot it needed to be great, I'd say Beck. Or Shantae.
ReplyDelete"Pending Capcom approval"
ReplyDeleteThey're screwed, It's gonna be cancelled before they know it.
Yeah... That right there is sarcasm... He's making a point about what happened to a lot of Megaman IPs like Legends 3.
DeleteA board game? eh. no.
ReplyDeleteThis is a flagrant abuse of Kickstarter. The intention was always to support small developers who can't get funding, not to help huge corporations foot the bill.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I was just thinking.
DeleteYeah, it's cool to have this thing (boardgame), but i think too, the kickstarter wont be really helpful....for them.
DeleteBad strategy again, specially after Mighty 9 <_<
I don't think you realize that Basco Games is neither huge nor a corporation. They are simply making the game while Capcom decides whether or not to fully back it.
DeleteJasco isn't a huge corporation...
DeleteThis quote from NeoGAF sums it all up for me:
ReplyDelete"I can't believe that I braced myself for a smartphone game and still got disappointed."
LMAO so true, what the hell happened to you Capcom? You used to be the greatest 3rd party developer of all time, now... you're one of gamings biggest jokes.
DeleteDon't donate people.. it'll be cancelled anyway!
ReplyDeleteNow that Mighty No.9 has proven fans are involved and would pay KickStarter, CAPCOM wants to copy that success. Oh the suckers.
Sorry; this product was well in the works long before Mighty No. 9 was a thing. A Kickstarter was always planned.
DeleteSo was MML3, and the megaman fps. Where it is in development has NO PART in whether it will get the axe or not. It'll get the axe, it cant have dlc.
DeleteWhat? Why?! Why does a board game need funding?! I don't--
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is that whatever art and content that might get generated for this board game better be 100% original. I'm going to be thoroughly disgusted otherwise, if the Kickstarter is successful. (Now watch all the art come from commercial fan commissions.)
Man all this whining about them needing funding.
DeleteJasco isn't a big company, their primary game is UFS and they are trying to branch out. But of course UFS itself is still a tough one. They are also working on a Red Horizon comic. This is a wise choice because they are trying to just see how loyal the so-called "fans" are in hopes that there is enough interest to fund this game. Sure it seems a bit unprofessional but any little bit probably helps fund THIS game for people to show they want it, while still being able to focus on their other things. It's not only a smart business tactic - but it's something to help this game come out faster, aswell as take a load of stress off. Capcom has done a lot of negative things to Mega Man over the years lately, there are a lot of wounds that won't heal. Capcom will get itself in the gutter if they don't smarten up. But at this point, one thing that the Mega Man fans need to do is stop dwelling on the past. Many fans seem to be picking themselves off their feet recently so it's a good thing. The blow Capcom dealt was really strong.
No offense but after capcom said fuck you to the fans time after time, i refuse to support anything capcom puts out, sorry but if someone wants to "see how loyal the fans are" to the megaman franchise you should maybe... support the ORIGINAL people who came up with megaman, and the entire character designs and concepts, in this case it was Keiji Inafune. My loyalties are with the person whos creation affected my life, and their games helped mold some of what the first 3D free roaming experience of gaming would be. Anyone who wants to ride on the coat tails of this mans success, and his teams work i wont support simply because, their attempting to take money from the fans for something they themselves didnt come up with the original idea for. Who came up with the megaman idea? Again who came up with the character designs and concepts? And then who was the lead at the time during initial findings of the megaman franchise during the beginnings?
Deletelots of people. Some of which are still with Capcom.
DeleteActing like Mega Man is solely Keiji Inafune and the Mega Man 1 and 2 team's is an insult to the spirit of the franchise, which was made and built on the idea of multiple people coming together to work on it from day one.
Keijii Inafune did NOT create Mega Man. The Official Complete Works book and translated interviews from the Ariga manga are VERY CLEAR on that point. The first game was already in progress with existing sprites when he came onto the project. Inafune created Mega Man's visual design in artwork. He took the sprites and created some of the official artwork. He got more involved in later games, but he is NOT Mega Man's sole creator.
DeleteAnyone else getting really tired of people complaining about others buying official merchandise? To the complainers: screw you. I want Mega Man, and NO M#9 is NOT a replacement. It could be a good game, but I like the official characters and if push came to shove and Capcom released a MM game of equal quality at the same time as M#9 and I only had enough for one, I'd buy the MM title.
I'm with you, I'm sure Mighty No. 9 is going to be great but I'm a Mega Man fan through thick and thin. I have a great respect for not just Inafune but the rest of the team who made Mega Man what he is today. If people want to support Mighty No. 9 that's great but as for me I'm going to stick with Mega Man and continue to support it any way I know how and is within my interest.
DeleteNah. No thanks. I rather the video game of Megaman.. Not a board game.
ReplyDeleteJasco isn't huge. And its getting made regardless, the Kickstarter is just to make it a little better, not determine its fate. I like games like this, its not shoots and ladders, its a game for the D&D crowd.
ReplyDeleteHey Capcom, why don't you help them fund the game. It's not like a huge amount of money is being sunk into the pathetic game known as Xover.
ReplyDeleteGaist Crushers is actually what they're sinking money into. Huge-ass gambit they've got.
DeleteYeah this isn't going to be Mega Man Monopoly, or some other mindless board game people associate with the term board game. This sounds like something they want people bring to board game nights, and have actual strategy to it (with hopefully minimal dice/card luck, whatever system they use).
ReplyDeleteBoard games are expensive to make, don't kid yourselves, especially when they're making single plastic pieces for characters (not on mass, like pieces for a game of Risk), and want them to look nice/recognizable.
I really hope this does well. They've mentioned doing expansions for other games in the series, and being able to mix and match parts within them. I love expansions like that that, like dominion.
Wow, they're really scraping the bottom of the barrel now, aren't they?
ReplyDeleteAm I part of the minority here in that I am actually looking forward to this?
ReplyDeleteNo you are not, I'm actually interested in this as well. While I'm not a big board game person, I do however like the concept and would like to play this with friends. If not then it'd make a nice addition to my collection.
DeleteYou're both in the minority.
DeleteSorry, I misread at first. Thought I read alone. I guess that's what I get for skimming and not really putting any real thought into it. Anyways. I'm still looking forward to this to add to my collection if it gets funded.
DeleteIf this is funded there will be hell to pay.
ReplyDeleteIf this ISN'T funded, I'm gonna be even more disappointed with this fandom...
DeleteIt's a board game.
DeleteLicensed, no less.
I can count the number of people in the world who will play this game for years on one hand.
NO.
ReplyDeleteBoard game? Capcom just wants to MILK money without making a game. Sad sad Capcom.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it'll be interesting to see how this plays out, I'm not really sure who I would play this with. I feel this would have been a proper item during Mega Man's heyday in the 90's. Grateful that there are still things being released with "Mega Man" on it, but we want a videogame, Capcom.
ReplyDeleteUhmm, no thanks.
ReplyDeleteThe last time I checked, the year is not 1992. I've already given my money to a current-gen project that is actually worthwhile.
