Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai is well aware of both Mega Man and Kirby's mutual ability to copy abilities from others. So what would happen if Kirby eats Mega Man? Would we experience some sort of universe shattering paradox? Here's what Sakurai had to say when speaking with Joystiq:
"A lot of what you're asking is still classified," he told us through an interpreter at E3. "As far as the physical appearance of Kirby," he said, "I think what you imagine is probably pretty close to what will actually happen." Sakurai put his hands next to his head, in what we're pretty sure was the international sign for "Mega Man's helmet." We followed up by asking if Kirby would be gifted with a Mega Buster. "He's got little tiny arms, so who knows."
Traditionally, Kirby acquires an opponent's neutral B move. It's largely speculated Mega Man's neutral B is Metal Blade. But because Metal Blade can be used in eight directions, it remains to be seen how Kirby can pull that off with just button combinations. We have plenty of time to speculate so... have at it.

Metal Blade is probably press B to toss a blade forward, hold a direction before the toss animation finishes but after/right when you press B to change the angle.
ReplyDeleteKirby can easily be programmed to do the same just like he can angle Bowser's fire breath, reverse the Falcon Punch or angle Pit's bow, even if it means he misses out on having an adorable Mega Buster arm-flap.
That would be a problem if Mega wants to use any of his other specials. I believe pressing B will have Mega throw the blade forward; holding B will cause Mega to pull out and hold the blade, then pressing a direction and releasing the B button will fire it in that direction.
DeleteProbably mega buster, since it's the main signature of the franchise.
ReplyDeleteMegabuster is Rock's A move, though.
DeleteIt's probably either Metal Blade or Crash Bomb.
Zero should be in this I'm not buying!
ReplyDeletek
DeleteYour comment is like a fanboy who are never satisfied, what's the problem?
DeleteZero is better in ProjectXZone. His design is not made for a game like Super Smash bros.
Not for Super Smash bros then, Megaman (classic) is perfect for that.
Nobody outside of the fanbase knows who Zero is. Mega Man is iconic. You're being ridiculous, Zerowing
DeleteIf you want Zero, go play one of the other 500 games he and X have made a fuckin' cameo in. I'm tired of seeing the X characters in shit.
DeleteThis is classic Mega Man's time to shine, and rightfully so since the entire franchise started on the NES with him.
Deal with it.
He's probably being sarcastic, guys.
DeleteZerowing:
ReplyDeleteA nephew asked me about Zero being in, seeing as I had the Type 1 and Type 2 figures. I told him no, that Zero was an X series character, and we were getting the original Megaman. I would one day love to see Zero and Rock square off, if they ever did as envisioned by Inafune and co. I'd be cool with Sakurai breaking convention to give Kirby the buster. Assigning the buster to A seems an odd design choice.
You know, this reminds me of a Brawl in the Family comic from not too long ago... Heh heh heh.
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned, Kirby generally gets opponent's neutral B move, but in the case of MegaMan, I think he might get a Mega Buster of his own. That would be more in line with stealing the character's most iconic attack.
ReplyDeleteMore interesting would be to know a "canon" response from Sakurai about what would happen if Kirby swallowed MegaMan. Like, maybe Kirby would get MegaMan's ability to take Robot Master's weapons after defeating them. Which may not be much of a net change in the end : )
Based on what I've seen, Megaman's Neutral B attack is probably Metal Blade. Megaman's Neutral A attack is already confirmed as being his Mega Buster, as well as his Forward Tilt and Neutral Air.
ReplyDeleteKirby will likely only copy Metal Blade. The only time in the past that Kirby has copied something other than a character's Neutral B is when he copies Olimar, and that's just because all Olimar's neutral B does is pull a pikmin.
I see a lot of people talking about how Megaman having his buster on the A button is a weird choice, but I think it was a good idea. They did something that let Megaman use his buster while running, without giving him a bunch of punch and kick moves. I feel like having buster on A is probably the best way of preserving the feel of the character.
I'm guessing Metal Blade would work like an item that can be thrown in any of the eight directions. We've already seen other character catch the Metal Blade and throw it back.
ReplyDeletewell, it's a secret for everybody... at least for now
ReplyDelete@Zerowing:
ReplyDeleteSo go play Tatsunoko vs Capcom or Marvel vs Capcom 3. :P
@HyperSonicEXE:
The Cataclysm theory would return if it happened...

And I wonder...

I hope Kirby gets Metal Man's helmet.
ReplyDelete"But because Metal Blade can be used in eight directions, it remains to be seen how Kirby can pull that off with just button combinations:
ReplyDeleteThe same way Megaman does. By inputting a direction after you press B, but before Megaman actually throws the metal blade. It's nothing new and a lot of characters in Smash already have stuff like that. Ie Link's Boomerang, ROB's laser eyes, and not to mention all the tilt and smash attacks that can be aimed up or down.
