Fans Recreate Rockman Xover in Flash

Keen to try out Rockman Xover before it's released? Press Start, CutmanMike and Brotoad put together a little flash game that recreates the game's gameplay. It's an authentic imitation based on the screenshots and small bits of footage we've seen so far. Go knock yourself out and play it right here.

... Oh, you're back? Alright. Now you're probably wondering, "is that how the game will really play?" Essentially, yes. Click here for some real gameplay footage and compare.

Amazing, no? Even if the final product turns out a smidgen better than expected, you've got to give the guys who made this copy some props (fun fact: this was made in under 24 hours). It's pretty neat in and of itself!

Thanks for the tip, Press Start.

  1. Three guys made this.

    THREE GUYS.

Capcom had, what? Maybe 20 men on this "project"? Wow.

  2. It has a fully-functioning Auto-Play function.

It has a fully-functional. Automatic. Gameplay. Function.

God. Damn. I don't know how Team Cutstuff did it, but that's pretty damn impressive.

  3. This is the best thing the MM community has released in recent years.

THIS says a lot about Xover's development. Look at how little effort went into this. No, that's not including all the Battle memory stuff and what have you. I mean the gameplay. It's so bare bones, it took three guys with FLASH to reproduce it.

    Holy shit.

  4. Upon seeing how true to the real project this fan-made copy is, my faith in humanity is restored.

It just so happened that it stole all the faith that was left in the supply for Capcom to make make that restoration.

Yup, they cancel games without giving an explanation and put a lot of work on Rockman's 25th anniversary. I wonder if the game's team only has 10-15 people...
And other mobile games Capcom released for the same system, like those "Minna to ____" games, shows that they could have done better graphics.

  8. The games theme music is actually pretty cool!

  9. Well now that's something i'd like to see as a true fan made game.
I know this flash game was made just to show how easily can be made, but you know.. since capcom doesn't care anymore.. why don't you guys remake the game for the 25th anniversary? I mean, the "demo" went pretty well (expect for the horrid/awkward Xover run frames which the retail version has already -_-). I'd love to see XOver remade by the fans entirely!

  10. You see crapcom?? in your face!!!

  11. That theme song is the ONLY redeeming thing from XOver.

  12. This game is actually funnier than it looked in the demo, based on the new details and this, this game may be better than we think.

  13. Capcom just got owned so hard by Cutmanmike and Team Cutstuff! xD
on a side note: i noticed that fanmade megaman games are better then the newer capcom Megaman games

  14. The ending is the best.

  15. Btw, they did this demo under 24 hours.

  16. any fans are willing to remake game, but with megaman x elements instead of this autoplay and turnbased shit?

i mean... its pretty possible right?

  18. Anybody else unable to play this?

For some reason, the link gives me a "Not found" error screen.

Could someone directly link the .swf file or something? Thanks.

  19. So we have an engine for the game...

And knowing Capcom, all the buyable stuff will be in the download, meaning we'll have every asset for the next 6 months at least.

We could totally expand upon this flash demo and recreate the entire game, improved and the way we like it.

  20. Uh, Protodude? Apparently the game was taken down pretty quickly, seeing as how the page now displays a 404 error.

Still, it was funny while it lasted!

  21. Aaaand the fanmade demo is down. God damn.

  22. Just finished playing it.

I laughed at the ending, but still, that was pathetic.

I have the means to get the game for free, AND all of the in-app DLC for free, and yet I'm still dreading the day it eventually comes out.

  23. Well here's what they DIDN'T do.
    Level design, system design, artwork.
That's majority of the work there done for them.

  24. It is hilarious that this was recreated so easily by a smaller group of fans, but I have to be honest - I think there may be a tiny nugget of real fun in there in figuring out the best timing in which to charge up and fire at enemies.

Simplistic timing-based stuff that has almost certainly been done to the point the Megaman aspect seems entirely tacked on, sure. The boss fight sucks but the lead-up to it, potentially okay short time-waster.

The demo ending is truly amazing and one-of-a-kind though.

  25. @Ramsaran Grady:

What level design? This is all the game will be. A train ride.

@Amir: the game will be free, anyway.

  26. They even made it so it is impossible to die. Just like the real game will be.

  27. I could see it comming.....crapcom knocking down this page, life is full of surprises....

  28. @kotipeltox: The dev team just moved it to Newgrounds, though given that Capcom was asking people to rat out those who uncovered/used the DLC/PS3 exclusive characters from SFxT so those users could be banned, I wouldn't be surprised if they had issued a C&D or something.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Radix: But now that they are on newgrounds, Capcom is going to be really hard pressed to take it down. Just look at how resilient Tom Fulp was when the BBC came down on him over the Teleltubbies thing. All that really resulted was a name change, that's it.

  30. @October 14, 2012 3:49 PM: Well, I should've said "if it turned out they'd issued a C&D", but yeah.

It'd be both hilarious and depressing if Capcom did try to have this taken down, as it'd mean they've become so idiotic that they can't handle criticism anymore.

  31. @Anon:

The game may be free, but the in-App DLC will not be. Something that in-App Cracker will likely be able to grant. :3

Taking the supposed early release notes into consideration, there's a small chance that some Famitsu readers will get the game early. Chances are at least ONE of them will upload the .ipa and make it free for all AppCake and Installous users.

  32. Three guys.
    FLASH.
    24 hours.

Why am I not amazed at all? This is how much Capcom cares for the game series that catapulted them to stardom and how big an effort they have put in crafting this excuse of a game - 25 years, and all us Mega Man followers get is the cancellation of Universe and a sequel we waited 10 years for.
I'm not going to buy anything from Capcom anymore until they show the blue bomber fans some love.

  33. the scary part is that "fans" made it for who, for other fans of rockman? i don't even think someone needs this piece of garbade, be that hardcore fans or not..

Wow, this is certainly quite telling. I wonder what the Capcom guys think about this? I mean... to be shown up by the fans like that... that's gotta hurt.
