Should Mega Man Be Playable in PlayStation All-Stars?

Every so often, the IGN Podcast Beyond crew get together to discuss what third party characters they'd like to see in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. This week, they're taking a look at the 'ol Blue Bomber -- why he should be in the game and how he might play. Kick your feet up and give it a watch (there's some amusing animations, too):

What do you think? Yeah, yeah; a good chunk of the main roster might've already been leaked. But hey, if he's not there we can still count on the prospect of DLC characters, right? And if that fails... well, we can shoot a hopeful gaze to the next Smash Bros.

  1. This is probably going to get a bit of disagreement, but here's my take:

While it's true a lot of the characters in this game aren't exactly first-party characters, I personally don't see that Megaman has enough of a presence on the Sony platforms to really warrant him being a playable character in their upcoming fighting game. He's had all of four unique games and countless re-releases on the Playstation, PS2, PS3, and PSP, but bearing that in mind, these games have all been on other platforms as well. The only game I can think of that was "Sony exclusive" would be Rockman Battle & Chase which, while awesome and brilliant, was nowhere near as popular as most of the games the current third-party characters are coming from.

Now, if they wanted to get Zero or Rock Volnutt in on the action, that would make a bit more sense. The Megaman X games were exclusive to the Playstation systems and computers until the release of the Mega Man X Collection, and with the exception of the first game, so were the Mega Man Legends games. In fact, Legends is still exclusive to Sony systems to this day.
Now I know what you might be wondering. "Why Zero and not X?" Simply put, Zero didn't become the "hack 'n slash hero" he is today in Mega Man X1-3 -- or rather, the playable version there-of. Yes, Zero was using a beam saber since being rebuilt by The X-Hunters in the second game, and you can make him use his sword in the third game as well, but it wasn't until the fourth game -- a Playstation and Saturn exclusive -- that he used his saber exclusively. Or at least almost exclusively. He had a severely nerfed Z-Buster in X5/X6, but he was still pretty much saber-only there and especially from then on.

So, that's my take on the matter. Classic Mega Man? Nope. Zero or Volnutt? Absolutely.

  3. Legends 1 was ported to N64, called Megaman 64.

  4. Capcom already put reboot Dante in the game and I don't know if Sony would be so generous to allow two reps for a company.

  5. Classic/EXE Mega Man would be logical candidates for Nintendo's Smash Bros.

X/Legends Mega Man would be logical candidates for Sony's Battle Royale.

Zero/ZX/SF aren't well-known enough in their respective console's playerbase or in any other. They have their own fanbase, which is in turn these series' playerbase, which happened to be a part of said respective console's playerbase for numerous reasons. They weren't big or iconic for the console they debuted on when compared to the others (Legends Mega Man is an exception because of what it meant for the franchise: first Mega Man game set in a 3D free roam enviroment and gameplay).

Still, this kind of question begs for believing in a dream. Dream on; I'll stay awake and avoid being disappointed when it doesn't become a reality.

  6. I'd be okay with it, but I wouldn't really care, to be honest. Now, if Mega Man (specifically, the original) were in the next Smash Bros., on the other hand...

  7. I'd rather see classic Rockman in the new Super Smash Bros.
Though if any Rockman character were to appear in this I'd have to buy it instantly.

  8. Legends isn't exclusive to sony systems. There was Mega Man 64, and 2 got a Windows port. Tron Bonne, however, was PS exclusive, which could have contributed to its outrageous price.

  9. Mega Man X or Zero? Perhaps!

Classic Mega Man is more of a Nintendo family character.

  10. I'm all for seeing more Mega Man. But honestly? I really don't think Mega Man ever acquired the title of "Playstation All-Star". I've never thought that Mega Man games helped push, or defined the Playstation/2/3/Portable. The majority of the games made on Playstation systems were continuations of series that were more successful on Nintendo consoles. The one Mega Man series the Playstation launched... well... flopped in relative terms.

Granted I don't think the current lineup in Playstation All-Stars does such a spectacular job of encapsulating the hits or centerpieces of Playstation history either. Particularly with specifically the third party characters. But I think just about any Mega Man rep would be better justified in Smash Brothers if either game's inclusion was exclusionary.

  11. Not Classic. Classic wasn't really Sony exclusive, only 8 was an exclusive(mediocre at best imo) and even recently, the Wii got 9 and 10 before the PS3.

Now for what Joseph Collins said.

While I agree with Zero, the events with Legends 3 last year, as well as TvC and Project X Zone, make me question whether Volnutt should be considered for the game. He was only for the PS1 with 2 games, and the attention has mainly been on the 3DS sequel. Thus not that great of a choice.

X would be better actually. And I say X because we need the actual namesakes of the franchise back in the spotlight, not the sidekicks(X Zero is a sidekick don't even argue).

  12. "This is a great time for Megaman" "The time is right for a reboot of Megaman"
Turned it off after these, this guy has no fucking clue what he's talking about

  13. I think X would be much more suitable for this game, I mean, the X series is much more relevant than the classic series when it comes to the PlayStation brand.

  15. Joseph Collins has a few valid points but I gotta say. I wouldn't say Volnutt is Sony Only just for the fact of MegaMan 64 existing :/
Sure it's just legends re-done but still...he's on another System.
That's also the reason Nintendo Power points out in a TvC spread.
They say something on the lines of "MegaMan Trigger/Volnutt From MegaMan 64"

  16. "Capcom already put reboot Dante in the game".

Wow, they really aren't being stealthy at all about this being a giant advetisement. They put a character who's game isn't even Gold in a game called "All-Stars".

  17. IMO Legends would be more representative since it was PS1 exclusive, X as a close second since it had 3 PS1 games and 3 PS2 games,

But on the other hand, Classic IS the most recognizable, and putting X in there would risk the "X is Mega Man" confusion from casual franchise followers, or disinterest from those who simply prefer Classic as the most recognizable Mega Man.

That all said, Classic DID have 2 Playstation games, as well as the Complete Works re-releases for the Playstation.

  18. @Anonymous 8:55:

Mega Man 8 wasm't an exclusive. In fact, the PS version has less content than the rival console.

Unless, it doesn't really exist, and I only had a dream that, three days ago, that I was playing the special Sega Saturn version, lol...

Now, for the topic at hand, I don't think Mega Man would do well here(if Capcom even bothers to add him to the roster). Time and resources are better spent trying to add him to the next Smash Bros. And that's if Nintendo decides on making 3rd party reps a tradition.

  19. For the record, Mega Man titles strictly exclusive to Sony are as follows:
    - Mega Man Battle & Chase (PS-X)
    - The Misadventures of Tron Bonne (PS-X)
    - Mega Man Powered Up (PSP)
    - Mega Man Maverick Hunter X (PSP)

Note that two of these are remakes.
As for Mega Man Legends? I stand corrected. As noted above, the Legends games all had PC ports, apparently with the noted exception of Tron Bonne. Which didn't have Volnutt in it anyway, as far as I know.
But then again, these games were released on the PC before PCs were considered "mainstream gaming platforms" by the general populous, so it's probably safe to say Volnutt was best known as being a Playstation character.

I don't understand what you're getting at here. X has just as much if not more of a right to be in PSASBR than Zero. Heck, Big Daddy from Bioshock made it in, and Bioshock started off as a PC/360 exclusive.

  21. @Model M
I say Zero and not X because, as I said, Zero became the hack-and-slash robot we all know during the Playstation era (X4-X6). X made no similar evolutions during this time period. He stayed the tried-and-true Variable Weapons System robot of the series.

  22. Being a big Battle Network/Star Force fan, you could only imagine how much I'd love to see EXE in this game, instead of Zero once again, although I'm aware that's impossible.

Even X would be better; Any incarnation of Mega Man will do. (minus Bad Boxart MM.. or a skin for Zero ala UMvC3)

.. Maybe that Onimusha Blade Warriors cameo means EXE can be in! (Kidding.. kind of!)

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Joseph Collins okay... first of all X had more customizable options than Zero through X4/X6 just because you say Zero is classified as the hack and slash character doesn't mean he is fitting for Playstation Allstars, X has every right to be in this game than Zero.

  24. I think mega man should be in smash bros just because the brand became popular on nes and mega man is an iconic name in video games. If other third party characters make it I hope it's not a lot of them since Nintendo has so many characters that haven't had a chance.

  25. If Mega Man is included in Playstation All-Stars, he should be properly portrayed.

He should have his Mega Man 8 U.S. voice, he should take 6.4 seconds to run across the screen, he should have the water balloon special attack and he should start each match by saying "Why must I fight you? We are not enemies!"

It'll bring back all the mediocre memories of when we first played Mega Man on a Sony console.

You may not like MM8, and you're entitled to that, but it really has no relevance to the topic at hand...

    ReplyDelete
  27. @Prof. MegaMan:

Being on a Sony console had nothing to do with MM8's quality as a game. Don't forget it also came out for the Sega Saturn.
