Rockman EXE WS Getting a Fan-Translation

Remember Rockman EXE WS? It's a little WonderSwan-exclusive game that most have forgotten, save for the most die hard of EXE/Battle Network fans. While it never saw release outside of Japan, it's now getting an English translated patch courtesy of The Rockman EXE Zone.

The video above is a little teaser of what's to come. It's proof-of-concept, but the real deal is well under development. Thing is, well, they could use some translators. The game's text has already been archived and extracted, so once someone with the Japanese know-how gets on board, it's smooth sailing.

Feel like lending a hand? You can learn more about the project here.

  1. Let me be (one of?) the first to say... Woo hoo! Though I'm hardly a fan of the series -- I could never really get into it, despite playing the first for a couple hours -- I can honestly say the two Rockman EXE side-scrollers are my favorite games in the series by far.

  3. Awesome. I finished this game and I will play this again to understand the story as usually as always. Thanks for the news.

  5. Excited about this. Played it a long time ago, but not understanding the text kept me from going on.

  6. I always liked this game. I remember feeling really good about my luck when I found a copy of the game near-brand new for only $10 and a WonderSwan Color for not too much more than that.

And the now seeing them on eBay go for upwards to $80 and up. XD

Game itself, honestly, is pretty good. Some stuff is a bit weird, like how certain Chips are One-Time use and that's it, while others are more of an equip-like feature. (Swords, Fists, Double Jump, etc)
I also liked the whole connection-quality factor, where if you had a lower connection, your controls and chips would respond with a very slight delay. And at 0 bars quality, you couldn't even pause the game.

Overall, the game was pretty fun. It was also cool how each of the Style Changes were equally balanced out. None of them was truly better than the others, though I remember using the Elec and Heat a lot more than the others.

The only gripe I had with it, was that it could be 100%'d very quickly. It only took me a week to finish the entire game with every single chip, Style Change, and beat all the challenge modes that are unlocked after, and beat the extra Gospel secret stage.

Wow, the quality of that game is pretty bad... Wasn't the wonderswan supposed to be more powerful than the GBA? That's pretty sad how bad it looks...

  8. Why wasn't this ported to the GBA for better exposure?! This game looks awesome!

  9. So looks to be a sidescroller remake of EXE1. Well I did enjoy network Transmission, and this looks pretty fun too. Now why does this have to be a fan translation? Too bad this isn't an official release. Get WS going on virtual console and release it for download on the 3DS. Or just release it as DSiware.

And is it me or does Megaman dance when standing still and strut when he walks? I'm just wondering if "Girllookatthatbody" is running through his head the entire time.

  10. WonderSwan aimed to compete with the Game Boy Color, even though the game was out when the GBA was in its prime.

Someone mentioned the odd text. It's been fixed already, but interestingly, that bad english font was already in the game.

  13. Two things:

    - This looks really fun, almost like a older-school demake of Mega Man Network Transmission.

    - This makes me really miss the Battle Network series and the summers I spent playing each installment each successive year. God, what a series.

  14. @Vinnnie D.: More like a sidescrolling game that follows the anime, rather than being EXE1

  15. @AshPaulsen: I know! Me too. My summers have been duller since.

  18. Oh, this looks like fun! It reminds me quite a bit of other hand held side-scrolling Mega Man games, like Zero and ZX.
    Do want.
Hey, Protodude, will you keep us updated as to when it's finished?
