So,
Street Fighter X Tekken has been out for a little while now. The dust has (mostly) settled on the presence of old man Mega. Ultimately, we can all agree he's a strange one. But what if I told you the both Mega Man and Roll could have ended up a
lot stranger?
The above concept art comes from the
Street Fighter X Tekken Artworks book, which details the the old guy's development process. A number of different styles were considered before Capcom settled on the design we all know and
despise love. For example, the second from the top image pools design elements from the
Mega Man Star Force series.
There's a lot more unused designs to be seen -- some crazy wild, others downright cool. You'll find them all at
The Mega Man Network.
Ok, Bad Art Megaman looks cool in the first picture.
ReplyDeleteThe designs on the top are BOSS. I would rather have those than the current one!
ReplyDeleteit's sad see a really cool looking bad art megaman in their concept arts and now se what we got in the end...
ReplyDeleteBest. Thing. Ever.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, they all suck.
ReplyDeleteThe designs that is, the art is fine
This is the greatest concept art for a Classic Mega Man itineration I've ever seen. I can see why they settled with the final design: besides the joke intention (which is rather common in fighting games), the 40-year old human has an enticing, charismatic look on his face, like a retired hero excited to come back. Despite looking a bit rusty on combat, he's always seen smiling and confident of his battle skills(?).
ReplyDeleteIt's actually very interesting how the illustrators tried many designs, each quite different from each other! Makes you wonder what a new series would look like if the art style is a mixture between western and eastern styles. The younger Mega concept art looks incredible, and the rest could easily pass off as new Megamen for a new series.
The third one looks like Ryu and Nina from Breath of Fire III. >.>;
ReplyDeleteAnd the second one's Mega bears a vague resemblance to Omega Noise form from Starforce 3.
I like the third set of designs, though. I guess the main thing to those, is they seem out of place in a fighter. (I mean, I know you can fit anything into a fighter, but if you've got overweight/musclebound guy vs. scrawny/cute looking guy, you're gonna get overweight/musclebound guy.)
Nice drwing but those are not Rockman and ROll we know and love. They looks horrible and they look nothing like Rockman and Roll as well. UGH.
ReplyDelete@Takara_Kitsune: There was no Omega noise form. There was Libra, Cygnus, Taurus, Corvus, Virgo, Cancer, Ophiuca, Wolf, Gemini, Cancer, Rogue, Red Joker and Black Ace and there was a scrapped Lyra(Harp Note) noise. Where the heck did you get Omega noise? Are you sure you're not thinking of Rogue Noise?
ReplyDelete@Anon4: Please, this is getting tiresome. Knock it off. I'm tired of the community being so disrespectful. We get it - you're upset with the current state of the franchise. But you don't have to be a total dick about it - at least have some class, or do what we're doing over at Capcom Unity and actually do something about it.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting really tired of things like this. I'm not saying you can't be upset - I'm just saying be tasteful about it. Knock off the sense of entitlement, and try to offer some good suggestions as to what you think they should do.
And no, not something like "they should give us legends 3", that's still being rather childish. Rather, instead of just saying that, make suggestions for what should be in Legends 3. Contribute your ideas. Hell, CU had a "Design a weapon contest"! That's easily better than whining and complaining.
So if you're really that upset, don't be a spoiled child about it - get up and do something about it!
@Omega Anon: Ha... I don't know where I got that from, either. I meant Rogue Noise. >.>; I always had brotherbands with other games, so never actually encountered Rogue Noise myself. Kinda hard to recall that which you don't see too often. :P
ReplyDeleteAnd I suppose it doesn't look that close... probably more like Black Ace than anything. ^^;
Pfft, I would expect NOTHING less than the poorest of choices from Capcom. The first designs would have been perfect. Perfect. Did I say perfect? But no, we get some fat idiot. Then these people say "You need to quit yer bitching and complaining!" After seeing this, I think fans have a valid right to. Good going, Capcom! Hell, the human-looking Rock at the bottom with the hoodie might have been interesting. Much better than the fat sack of crap we received in comparison. Should have chosen the cool BBA Mega Man to say, maybe bring some good to that design rather than poking more needless fun at it.
ReplyDeleteCapcom. I mean, what I don't even...
Man, the top three look MUCH better than the one we actually got. What could've been...
ReplyDeleteAll of these look far more cool than the final design.
ReplyDeleteCapcom WHYYYYYYYY
I like the first and second pic. Why didn't they choose that one other than that fat slob?!
ReplyDeleteCapcom, you're stupidically ridiculous.
@Role, I can't shake the feeling you're projecting your own frustrations onto Anon4.
ReplyDeleteAll Anon4 was voicing was their opinion that all the designs are way off base from canon, which in their words "looks horrible".
If we're going to throw opinions around I'm sick of people like you having a fit when people voice their dislike. Sit calmly at your keyboard, consider their viewpoint, nod sagely and move on.
Your response is defensive, childish and all too common among Unity members.
Most of these concepts portray Megaman as rugged hero which would be the humorous part, the fact that he is deadpan but looks so out of place among the other characters. He still doesn't fit in on the game, but they went with a fat, silly hero who is aware of his shortcomings, which to me, kills the joke.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I can't believe people like the teenager with hoodie and blue hair anime boy ones... they're obscene!
@Replying Anon: Wrong. I'm actually doing something about it - look up the Mega Man Creator's Club over in Capcom Unity. Also, the problem is not just with Anon4 - It's also MegaMac, the Anon after Kenichi, the Anon after them, and many others.
ReplyDeleteOver in capcom unity I simply reply with a pic of Luna scolding them. I may start doing that here, too.
Oh man, that Roll in the second picture looks rockin'-awesome.
ReplyDeleteSame with the very cosplayable Mega Man on the left side in the fourth image.
It would be more messed up if Capcom makes these DLC.
ReplyDeleteWow, I really like all of them but the bottom one. The second one is really Gurren Lagann-lookin' and that is so alright with me.
ReplyDeleteIf they'd used ANY of them other than the over-the-hill fat guy look or the nervous public masturbator (or WHATEVER that hipster kid is doing) one, I'd have not been all put out and stuff.
There is WAY too much hate for what is possibly one of the most entertaining and, dare I say, FUN characterizations of Mega Man we've ever had. Such a shame. =/
ReplyDeletethe first and second designs sure look alot better then the crap design capcom actually put in the game.
ReplyDeleteis it just me or does the first design kinda resemble a different colored beefed up looking 1995 cartoon megaman?
the second design if it were colored red could pass off as a protoman design, kinda cool.
both of those designs honestly look alot better then the final product but i'm not too bothered about it since I have no interest in buying sf x t.
why couldn't there have been a normal megaman why did they have to make a joke out of him.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that BBA Mega Man is supposed to be controversial proves he was a success, after reading all these hate comments.
ReplyDeleteSure, the other designs are cool, but he's a joke character to begin with. Did you guys honestly think BBA MM was supposed to be cool?
A DLC costume from these designs would be cool, just for the alternative. I thought the top one was pretty cool blend.
It's a shame that Capcom trolled us so hard. To think we could have had Inafune's lol bad box art mega man, AND have him look cool at the same time....
ReplyDeletethese look awful, since when Capcop started recruiting 10 year odl kids for designers??
ReplyDelete@Clown Prince of Crime: How is making Megaman a fat bastard and Roll a generic whore supposed to be fun?
ReplyDeleteWe could have gotten the first picture instead.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, Capcom continues to be full of dicks.
The first and third one didn't look too bad. I'm actually kind of wishing they used those instead or turn it into a new series. But thanks for the heads up about this.
ReplyDeleteI love how like everyone completely forgets that it was Inafune who proposed the Badbox Art Megaman, and that Capcom was only respecting Inafune's wishes by keeping it in the game.
ReplyDeleteYes, that was sarcasm.
"these look awful, since when Capcop started recruiting 10 year odl kids for designers??"
ReplyDeleteSince Mega Man 4...
@Dr. Jerk: Wrong. According to Ono, Inafune wanted "something different", and Ono came up with badboxart. "Approving" and "Proposing" are 2 different things.
