Persistent Rockman Corner reader Pedro has made a profound discovery withing the guts of the recently released Mega Man X iOS port. Picking apart the contents of the code, Pedro succeeded in decrypting and opening the graphic files used by the game; he was surprised to discover following images...
Why, it's the official 25th anniversary logo! Spiffy, no? A little plain for my tastes, but for all we know, this could be a work-in-progress/placeholder design. Mind you, we aren't suppose to be seeing this right now.
As per usual, the logo will probably be used to promote products and events related to the Blue Bomber's 25th. Previous anniversary logos have adorned everything from games and books, to commemorative food products. If this is indeed the final design, be prepared to see it grace everything released under the IP throughout the year.
Specific plans for the anniversary have yet to be disclosed by Capcom; however, we do know that things are on the burner. According to Christian Svensson, Capcom are currently in the process of planning "things" to commemorate the occasion:
"25th for MM and 25th for Street Fighter next year. "Both will have "things" to commemorate the occasion. Exactly what is in planning stages but the are solid ideas already being batted around I hope you guys will like. But please bear in mind, they won't happen until some time in our next fiscal year begins mostly (so still a good ways away)."
Next fiscal year officially kicks off around March 31st, 2012. I advise you continue to keep your expectations in check until we have a better idea of what, exactly, these "things" may be. Nevertheless, the logo is an ensuring sign of things to come.
To be honest, the retraux look of it just makes me feel slightly unsettled. Like they want to say, "look at all this stuff we used to do!" rather than "look at all this stuff we're doing/going to do!"
ReplyDeleteObligatory comment about Mega Man Legends 3.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteWell, considering it's a logo to celebrate the past 25 years of Mega Man, I think it's a smart choice for logo. You're reading too much into it.
If that were their new logo for the entire franchise, that would be another matter perhaps worth noting.
The Mega Man face it's a little on top of the "25" number, not very professional. The logo it's ok.
ReplyDeleteHope we at least get to see a Battle Network Collection for the 3DS, along with another collection containing both Legends games and Misadventures of Tron Bonne that also comes with a bonus interview containing info pertaining towards Legends 3. That way I can play the games I missed.
ReplyDeleteWahoo!
All I know is that I had better see that logo gracing some physical, quality games anytime throughout this year. Not saying that in an ungrateful, greedy way. Just saying we simply need to see some MegaMan games this year. Maybe Legends 3 completed, ZX3 to finalize that series, Mega Man X9. C'mon, Capcom!
ReplyDeleteThe 1-Up Megaman head is a pretty iconic image when it comes to association with the Blue Bomber, only a little less than his NES sprite. Despite the avalanche of disappointments as of late, I still find myself with some hope that it means something good. Even if it's just Megaman 11, it means things may not be as dead as some of us have thought.
ReplyDeleteZelda's 25th logo looks way more interesting than this. This one seems a little rushed.
ReplyDeleteBut who knows. I guess it's still alright, if not a bit bright on the eyes.
I have to wonder why the logos are in the coding though, the port isn't part of the supposed anniversary "line-up".
They'll just slap it on the terrible Archie comic and call it a year.
ReplyDeleteKind of like what they did in 2003 when the Dreamwave Comic was out.
First anon is right retro logo really got me suspicious too.Cautiously waiting
ReplyDeleteIf that's the final design I'm not very impressed. Well, at least they managed to put the REAL Mega Man in the logo this time and not one of his current reincarnations.
ReplyDelete@January 10, 2012 2:43 AM Anon:
ReplyDeleteThat's because there is no current Megaman incarnation :D
Capcom=Deadcom
ReplyDeleteThere is no capcom anymore. Maybe they can be resurrected but I'm half expecting a Jill sandwich.
There hasn't been a new series launched since the 20th. To boot half the new Mega Man games released since then have been retrauxed classic.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of anything we know about that would serve as a logo. Mega Man's helmet circa 8 was on the 10th anniversary logo. Mugshots of EXE and Geo were on 15th and 20th.
Sure the network Mega Men made the logo when launching their series. So maybe BBAMM or the neonlight lined "Megaman" would be on the logo if Universe launched. But... there's no new series we know about. No known impending new games.
I'd go ahead and make the leap and say this means we won't be seeing a Mega Man ZZ or any new iteration of Mega Man for the 25th. Not that it just means we'll see Mega Man 11.
I'd be sorely dissapointed if all we got were ports. We already have the (slightly egregious) Anniversary Collection and X Collection.
ReplyDelete>yfw it turns out that the project is porting all of the X games to iOS
Oh God. An 8-bit Mega Man face. It can only mean ANOTHER 8-bit MM game. Not that I don’t want MM 11, I want something NEW, something so fresh like a facelift for the games. A full-on HD Mega Man 11. Or X9. Or Legends 3. Just not another 8-bit Mega Man.
ReplyDeleteOn another note: why pink and yellow?
I really hope MMX1 iOS wasn't originally supposed to be one of those nebulous "things" we should expect for MM's 25th anniversary.
ReplyDeleteIf this i the final (or close to final) logo and it means we're getting MM11, then I just hope that it's not a half-assed hackfest (not that the previous two games were).
...though knowing latter-day CoJ and effort, they'll probably just slap it on Archie-MM like that one Anon said and pretend that we got something new.
What Capcom needs to give us for the 25th is answers. 25 years, and all they've managed to do is turn the franchise into a convoluted mess where the EXE universe is the only one that has a level of coherency with its plot.
ReplyDeleteWe need something to tie Classic into X. As in, proper closure for the Classic series. It honestly needs to die if they're going to keep milking it meaninglessly. And we really need answers to the background of X and Zero.
We need something to clean up the X series. Maybe tie it into the Zero series. The whole plot with HURR SIGMA! HURR MAVERICKS! HURR WE KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL! is getting old. The whole copy chip subplot with Axl they started in X7 needs to be taken care of. The whole fiasco involving X, Zero, Light, and Wily need to be taken care of. Preferably with Light being able to rest in peace, and Wily's influence coming to an end. If they can actually connect it to the Zero series, even better.
The ZX series needs to be continued, filling in plotholes regarding Ciel, Thomas, and what the hell happened to Prairie. Preferably, it should end with something that has proper closure and can lead into DASH.
And we need DASH 3, obviously.
Instead, it's more likely that Capcom will just make RM11 without any plot. At most, they'll reboot the franchise ala Bomberman Act Zero. The fact that the logo came out from that abomination of a port makes me expect the same amount of quality from any 25th anniversary project that Capcom's going to make. Like hell I'm going to bother trying to pirate something like that, let alone buy it.
And as for Street Fighter? Eh. Just the non-canon SFxT and meh merchandising, I'd say.
@4th Anon
ReplyDeleteIf it's just Mega Man 11, probably done in the 8-Bit fashion, that's pretty close to dead if you ask me. If they keep on using the retro gimmick they might as well just sign Mega Man over to the company that produces products for Hot Topic and Spencer Gifts and other novelty places like that. 'Cause that's all Mega Man is then. A novelty, a brand.
If 11 comes out and it's done like MM7 or 8 or something completely new, then I'll be pleased.
I love how everyone completely ignores the point that we arent supposed to know this yet for a good while, And this isnt the logo set in stone. Now, I dont know about you, But I'm pretty sure anyone could think up another logo before March of this year.
ReplyDeleteMega Man Legends & ZX Official Complete Works!
ReplyDeleteI'm not digging this at all. I want to see some proof that Mega Man is moving FORWARD and not sticking to his roots and only his roots.
ReplyDelete@Dashe
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, moving forward in this day and age results in more things like the MMX iOS port. Sticking only to Mega Man's roots will get stale, and I'm sure there are people who would say that it already has. Moving forward is equally horrifying, though, especially with the way Capcom is treating Mega Man now, and the industry and Capcom's climate in general.
I kind of wonder at times if the best thing for Mega Man is a quiet, peaceful death... given the fate of many other series, it's probably for the best.
Well, the fact that it's unused in the game's code could mean anything, including nothing.
ReplyDeleteBut if I were to over-analyze it, I would say that the reuse of NES sprites says that Capcom has got nothing other than their back catalogue, which is exactly what we don't want to hear. Call me when Trigger's mug appears somewhere.
And I know, Sven, Seth, and the rest have all been promising "things" to come. With all due to respect to them (they are both awesome people), I've pretty much given up on Capcom's word when it comes to Mega Man. If CoA wants to put together a new compilation for us as they did with Classic/X last console generation, then by all means go for it. But the big stuff comes out of Japan, and they have totally failed us. It will take a rabbit out of a hat worn by a unicorn to undo the damage that they've done. Or just resuming Legends 3; one of those two.
@Dashe
ReplyDeleteYou said it.
I agree with Protodude. This logo is a little plain for me too :/ Also, I know there is no "new" incarnation of Mega for them to use but why an 8-bit 1-up face? ( I bet MMU Mega would of been used if that came out) Personally I'd prefer some sort of official drawn face art like his 15th & 20th over this 8-bit face despite being born in 86 and growing up with the 8-bit stuff. Actually I'd settle for just a drawn Buster on the logo.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see this on plates and books.
ReplyDeleteI'm really excited about the 25th anniversary actually, I'm quite interested to see what goodies are going to come out for the celebrations. That said, Capcom's tacit support of SOPA via the ESA is going to limit my purchasing habits.
ReplyDeleteRemember, they've only stated so far that they haven't released an official stance on their support of SOPA, however they DO still belong to the ESA (which is a major supporter.)
Mega Man X9 please.
ReplyDeleteWhile it's nice to see that something Mega Man-related is actually in the works, I really don't know what to expect from it. There's a chance that they may pull through with something awesome, like Mega Man 10 (which I think they went above and beyond with, despite reusing the 8-bit theme).
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, they may very well do the exact opposite, and show us something that's complete garbage, with Mega Man Universe being a prime example (at this point, I don't need to say anything more about it; I'll let the trailer speak for itself).
I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
I'm ready for a game announcement now. Please.
ReplyDelete@Krazy Monkey: Stop hating on the game based on that trailer.
ReplyDeleteBefore MMU was canned, they released a statement saying the game was being overhauled due to all the negative press and critism it received, which was also the reason for no new trailers and photographs.
Meaning no one knows what MMU, at the moment of it's cancellation, truly was. So stop beating that dead horse and move on. We get it already.
I hope this means something from the more forgotten series...
ReplyDelete@Anonymous:
ReplyDeleteThe trailer isn't the sole reason why I hated the game. There was various other factors, like all the gameplay videos that were shown, the information that the producer provided us with, and so on and so forth. Apparently, these so-called "changes" weren't significant enough for them to continue the game's development.
Also, I'm not "beating a dead horse"... I'm strictly stating that there's a chance that Capcom could set people up for disappointment again, like they did with that game (and the cancellation of Legends 3).
I do agree the logo is rather mediocre in design, but what bothers me more is that it doesn't exude any confidence or suggest any forward-facing direction at all. The previous logos weren't afraid to show where the series was at that point: Battle Network, Starforce.. even if those aren't the most popular series with fans, Capcom proudly showed them as the place where MM stood at that time. So according to this logo, where do we stand now? In the classic series of 20 years ago? What this logo does represent well, is Capcom's apparent unwillingness to take any risks with the series.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, keep in mind, Capcom is aware they've lost a huge amount of confidence from MM fans during the past year. We haven't heard about any new MM project, and I'm sure we're not going to hear anything at all until Capcom is absolutely 100% sure it's something that will be released and will make fans happy. I'm sure they feel that whatever significant step they take with MM, it can't end in a way that will dissappoint fans like last year.
I predict a MM11 in 8bit style, a compilation of a series, and maybe, maybe MMX9 in 16 bit. In other words nothing but cheap cash ins. Crapcom can't do anything right anymore.
ReplyDelete>people expecting Legends 3, X9
ReplyDeleteReally? While I'll admit that being pessimistic doesn't help matter at all, neither does being unrealistically optimistic.
I'd be OK with just MM11 (assuming any relevant plot advancement), which would kind of fit the pattern of every two years. (MM9 in 2008, MM10 in 2010, MM11 in 2012?)
It'd be nice if they were to continue Legends 3 starting with the 25th anniversary, but that's never going to happen.
ReplyDeleteIf Legends 3's development was continued and released like normal, it would have been released sometime in 2012 (or 2013) I'd bet, and THEN it would have gotten the anniversary logo labeled on it. But nope, it doesn't seem realistic that it'll be continued.
Krazy Monkey, If you're only going to be complaining about Legends 3 and Universe, You might as well just stop yourself there before you seem like a dumb kid on Call of Duty with his 'leet 360 noscopes'.
ReplyDeleteInafune kept the franchise alive
ReplyDeletewithout him, the series is dead and, anyway, I don't wanna play a game made by other teams because I know that it will look like X6. X7, X8 and command mission
No one at capcom understand the franchise like him
maybe I'm too nostalgic but I feel the same with the Zelda series : since Aonuma took the lead, I have always a bad taste after playing his games. I reaaly prefer the first five myamoto zelda games
I'm expecting at least a megaman game for the 3DS this year, I honestly don't care what series it is I just want to play some new megaman games. The last Mega Man that I've played was Starforce 3 black ace and that was about 3 years ago.
ReplyDelete@Kips:
ReplyDeleteWhere was the complaint in either of the posts I made? In my first post, I was saying that I don't know what to expect, and that they'll either do something to please the fanbase, or they'll do something to disappoint them again. I was merely using those, along with Mega Man 10 as examples.
Like I always say, had anybody else done anything similar to that, it wouldn't have even been given a second glance. God, how annoying.
@January 10, 2012 5:26 PM Anonymous - What was wrong with the way X6 "Looked"? It's done in the same graphic style as X4 & X5. And that's Superb IMO. I Love the how those 3 X games look (X4 on Sega Saturn being my fave). But, if you have a problem with how X6 looks, then you have to hate how X4 & X5 look too. Since, they are the same style after all.
ReplyDeleteI know one type of product this logo won't be adorning...
ReplyDelete...GAMES!!!
I bet you that logo will be used somehow for the X port.
ReplyDeleteCapcom rolls out an update for the X port when the anniversary hits. The update causes the game to insert the logo at the right side of the screen somewhere.
Simple as that.
@MegaNerdX Actually, there was a change between each one. X5 had more colors or a better use of the colors in elements. In X6 they changed the art slightly and Zero's saber went from a curving slash to a straight lightsabre.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope that they actually give us a game worth playing.
ReplyDeleteMEGA-MANGO CONFIRMED FOR BEN AND JERRY'S.
ReplyDeleteMega Man Legends 3 is okay, but how about brining over the Mega Man Battle Network crossover (the one with Mega Man Geo-Omega (from Mega Man Star Force) in it).
ReplyDelete@January 11, 2012 1:31 AM, Anon
ReplyDeleteLOL what? ... I would totally buy that. lD
But, yeah.. I have mixed feelings for this whole "25th anniversary" deal. I'll cross my fingers for something amazing, but I won't hold my breath.
This year, four blockbuster games:
ReplyDeleteRuby-Spears Mega Man - The Video Game
Archie Mega Man - The Video Game
Mega Man Megamix - The Video Game
Mega Man Zero - The Comic Video Game
Two MM games gets slaughtered and no megaman in mvc3. Now they are trying to find a way to get back their fans' trust. Only way I'm trustin' those bums again is if they get back to those 2 cancelled games and make this 25th anniversary actually worthwhile product. Thats gonna take a real miracle.
ReplyDeletehonestly, I would not expect anything spectacular from capcom at all. megaman seems to be the one franchise they just tossed aside for all these endless fighting game rehashes they release every couple years.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see a megaman x game that takes the series to a whole new level with the highest quality 2d possible an example of the type of 2d im talking about would be the awesome 2d of the guilty gear x games would big sprites, detailed backgrounds, smooth fluid animation, flawless controls and how about some animated cutscenes like in x4 instead of some lame ass still pictures for the story.
something that ties the megaman series into the megaman x series. it won't happen though, its up to the fans to make some good fangames because the capcom that existed during the 80s and 90s is long gone. this is capcoms huge chance to create a amazing megaman game but I have no hope for them.
