Much to the chagrin of English speaking Battle Network fans, the Rockman EXE Operate Shooting Star translation project has come to a premature end. Project leader LuigiBlood has informed me development of the patch has ceased.
It's unfortunate, but the project proved too strenuous a task for LuigiBlood on top of other obligations. The work required was simply too much for a single person, and LB made the hard call to pull the plug. It's unfortunate, but game translation is a time consuming business. It's important to understand that not everything comes to fruition. These things happen.
LuigiBlood's efforts to take on OSS is something that should be respected regardless the outcome. He was willing to tackle a project Capcom USA opted not to, and for that you owe him your thanks.
In terms of the future of OSS in English, there are no other patches in the works that I know of. I will, however, be keeping an ear out. Battle Network fans are a passionate and devoted bunch -- I'm sure someone will take up the initiative one day.
The story is the same as the original game, so why not translate only the new parts (which aren't many) in a video, like the Great Adventure in 5 Islands videos?
ReplyDeleteIt's like the SaGa 3: Light and Shadow translation patch cancellation all over again! :(
ReplyDeleteWhere is the heavy lifting in translating? Is it the actual translation or grafting the translated text in?
ReplyDeleteBecause if it's the actual translation, surely a lot of it could be pulled from the original Battle Network. And I'm sure there are a ton of people who could help with translation.
...So I'm guessing it's the grafting. XD
Aww.. Oh well. Thanks for trying anyway.
ReplyDeleteQuite frankly, I'm not surprised. The only thing that could motivate him would be the continuation of the other Capcom's MegaMan titles. But seeing that both Legends 3 and MegaMan Universe was cancelled, I'd assumed all other fan made projects/translations would soon follow as well. This just shows that the franchise is slowly dying. :-/
ReplyDeleteThe translation page is at the same percentage as it was when you first mentioned it about a year ago...
ReplyDeleteAnd I've said it once and I'll say it again. Can you not just use the original dialogue from the original BN game and then focus on the new areas and chips? Or did Capcom COMPLETELY fuck with it?
I would love to pick up the mantle, except...
ReplyDeleteI have no clue how to do this.
Won't he at least consider putting what he had done up for anyone who wants to try it?
ReplyDeleteI mean, I've been following the Keitai Denjuu Telefang translation project, and that thing is an open project. He should at least put up what he had done for anyone else who wants to tackle it.
Is this something a community could do together? Or would it be hard to distribute work?
ReplyDeleteShow of hands, who's actually surprised.
ReplyDeleteI CAN use the original text. But for a fact, i can't copy paste everything because i would have to change (and ADD) about like 1/2 of the text data to have voiceovers, proper mugshots, and other stuff. It's even annoying with overlay files that doesn't have names so i can't make a difference between texts easily.
ReplyDeleteThings would be easier if i had a ROM hacker (other than Prof. 9) who deals with that stuff.
But i decided to stop. It was beginning to be annoying.
Also: I didn't update the website because anyway i don't use that host anymore. I don't want to update anymore.
Anyway, i won't stop with Rockman stuff though. I'm working on a very difficult project (but where motivation is still there, unlike OSS, sorry) where i'm making videos of it quite too much i would say.
*Scratches head* It's been a bad year for Mega Man =(
ReplyDelete:(
ReplyDeleteWow, that sucks. But then again, it's not like OSS had a HUGE amount of content, just a little bonus. It's not too much of a loss, but still.
ReplyDeleteFirst 4.5 never gets translated, now OSS. :(
ReplyDeleteI wish I could pitch in somehow, but I don't know an ounce of written Japanese or how to make patches.
wow, this is depressing... :( Thank you very much LB, I appreciate your brave effort so much. I hope this project can be picked up by someone who has the skill and love for Megaman battle network
ReplyDeleteThanks for the effort anyways, LuigiBlood.
ReplyDeleteI don't see anyone else in the Battle Network fandom taking up this project, and I guess I'm fine with that. The translation project sounded like it was too much of a hassle for just a port/remake with an extra scenario after all. I don't blame you for stopping.
I'd think that all we really need is just a simple full text translation of the extra scenario anyways.
The Battle Network fandom should just save the energy for something else down the line. Or I guess we could try to pick up 4.5 again.
CRAP. It seems like even Fan Movements are dying now.
ReplyDeleteCURSE YOU CAPCOOOOOMMMMMMM
ReplyDelete...
oh wait
What tools does one use to do this? I at least want to look into it.
ReplyDeleteHahaha, awesome. No one wants to waste their time with this rip off of a game, not even the fans.
ReplyDeleteLuigiBlood, dont worry, It was a decision that had to be made eventually. Hell, We're all lucky things like Mother 3 got a fanlation; the project was near on edge multiple times. Yeah, I saw this coming because frankly, It's a hard thing to do to translate an entire game with a small team: With Mother 3 they had a whole forum with at least 50 members on at all times backing them up. The fact that you even tried is something to be commended on in itself.
ReplyDeletePost what you have of the script so another person can pick it up. Or at least do what some do at GameFaqs and post just game text.

I really can't blame LuigiBlood. Sometimes having a full translation is one thing, but inserting it into a game is usually a whole other project on it's own. Especially when you have to move existing data around to make room for the data you are putting in and keep track of everything else and other factors that unless you hacked a game you won't know about. And yeah, it can get VERY annoying, especially if you don't have tools that were made for the specific game you are working on.
I may pick this up (after I finish what I'm working on) if my friend is willing to help with the translation. I really liked BN1 and I've yet to play OSS, so it's all good. No promises though...
Then again, I'd like to do all the BN games :D
Well at least they tried and I'm happy that they put an effort into it.
ReplyDeleteBut who cares anyway?
ReplyDeleteI feel like more people would be "thankful" if LuigiBlood actually posted and/or made public what was done so-far, so that anyone else who was interested in continuing could actually do so. You know, instead of just letting it sit on his computer collecting "dust". Unless of course there isn't anything to post... :S
ReplyDeleteI agree!
ReplyDeleteLuigiBlood, could you pretty pretty please share what you have?
Luigiblood, Y U NO FINISH TRANSLATION!?
ReplyDeleteI agree. Giving us what's been done would be useful in case someone else wishes to continue.
