Rockman: The Puzzle Battle Announced For Mobile Phones

Capcom has unveiled a brand new (Japanese exclusive) Rockman game for Docomo cell phones, entitled Rockman: The Puzzle Battle. Yes, it's exactly what it sounds like.

Sporting a rather awesome art style, The Puzzle Battle tasks players to swap and alternate blocks next to each other in an attempt to line up three or more of the same colors horizontally or vertically. If a successful combination is pulled off, Rockman will attack his opponent. The battle is won when the Robot Master's life depletes to zero, which, in true Rockman fashion, grants the player a new weapon. How, exactly, weapons affect the general gameplay remains to be seen.

A simple puzzle game, yes, but once again I can't help but be envious of Japan. All those exclusive mobile games... sigh. Ah, well. Maybe one day we'll get one on our side of the pond.

  1. I really like the soft art style for some reason. Hey Capcom. Hows about a Mega Man mobile game set for Android/iOS? Compile all the cell phone games from Japan into one!

  2. If Universe looked like this, I wouldn't have minded, lol

  3. So.. Basically.. Tetris Attack/Pokémon Puzzle Challenge/Puzzle League? :P I love those games though

  4. Lol, surprisingly nice art style. They remind me of the retro-roto figures. Like the earlier poster, one of my first thoughts was 'hey, Universe could have looked like this' :P

Protodude, wasn't that one SplashWoman dive game on the cellphone? For the US? So we have gotten one.

I don't believe we got it... unless I missed something.

  6. Somehow, that artstyle reminds me of the Paper Mario series. Not that it's a bad thing. As other people have noted, it looks a lot better than Mega Man Universe's.

  7. The art-style is a bet obvious, but I love it >:D I like how it looks like a vector version of the 8-bit sprites.

Skip Puzzle Battle 2 and go straight to 3 so I can have my SHADOWMAN AND GEMINIMAN!

It sucks that this is yet another Japanese exclusive, especially considering it looks simple enough that it could be ported to other cell phones...

  9. Isn't this artwork style kinda like what MM:PU wanted to do?. Wacky body proportions, big heads, cute colorful cartoon style?

  12. I'd settle for that one port of Rockman where the "new game+" mode lets you play as Roll. Who inexplicably has a charged shot. And the funny thing? I mostly want that for the sprites. D:

  13. @Dhylec: I bet you're thinking of Megaman Rush Marine, which as far as I know was US only.

Rockman Diver, which was the one with Bubble & Dive "meeting" you during your endless plunge into the watery abyss and had playable Splashy, was Japanese only.

  14. I think we're all in agreement, about the art-style. It's one of the best things I've seen in a while, honestly.

It's a subtle update to an existing design, but it also looks as if there's more to it than that. And Like MusashiAA said, it appears to accomplish what Powered Up was attempting to do. Almost as if this were the HD version of Rockman on Famicom. If capcom were to do that, I'd buy instantly.

As far as the game play itself, nothing I haven't played before, but a nice Mega Man twist to it. It's too bad that not many people will get to play this. I would be ok with just getting it for the artwork alone, though. It's that cool.

  15. I don't know if you know this yet, so I'd like to alert you that more pictures have been revealed for the Mega Man Zero figure: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/06/29/kotobukiya-debuts-new-mega-man-zero-model-kit.aspx

Thank you for running this blog. It's very enjoyable! :D

  16. I... really like that art style. Mega Man 11, Mega man Universe, Mega Man Powered UP 2... any one of them should have had that art style instead of the 8bit style they can't get out of.

  17. Really Capcom? Uggh. Between this, their problems with DRM, and the new "You can't delete your save files anymore" bullshit, I'm really starting to lose faith in the company as a whole. Maybe Inafune was right to leave...

  18. Wonder if it's Java based. If it is, someone may rip the .jar file and post it somewhere. Then it would be a simple matter to install it on your phone.

  19. I want the sprites to this game please.
