Your eyes don't deceive you, that's Mega Man Powered Up's Time Man! Issue #5 looks to be kicking off a brand new story arc featuring the time-warping Robot Master:
"Time Keeps Slipping” Part One: The evil Dr. Wily may be in jail, but that doesn’t mean the adventures are over for Mega Man! Federal agents are investigating Dr. Light for ties to the Robot Masters‘ rampage while sinister figures lurk in the shadows. And why does Dr. Wily look so smug in his jail cell? Issue #5 is due out for subscribers on August 24, comic shops on September 7, and newsstands everywhere on September 13.
Issue #5 marks the departure of series regular Patrick 'Spaz' Spaziante. In his place, Chad Thomas, artist of past cover variants, will be taking up the pen for the interior artwork. If you want to see Spaz continue his work on the comics, send Archie a line, and make your voice heard!

ReplyDeleteWhile I should be more excited about Time Man (and as Steve just pointed in all likelihood Oil Man), there's a part of me that really REALLY hopes they portray Fire Man with his Powered Up personality that was so hammy it was glorious.
So Timeman (and hopefully Oilman) hasn't been forgotten? Awesome. :)

Series Crossover-loathing aside, no comic book has ever benefited from the concept of time travel. (Well, Crisis probably helped Batman)

Regardless of who made what first, it's kind of sad for Archie, with their artistic talent, to blatantly use sprites not of their own making. They should be able to produce better work themselves.
ReplyDeleteThe sprites are similar, but if you look closely, you can tell that the sprite that Archie is using is not the same sprite as the one you linked to, Zan.
ReplyDeleteBoth do seem to be edited off of Mega Man's sprite from one of the Wonder Swan games, though. I can't recall off the top of my head which game it is, but I recognize it as such.
The sprite base is Rockman Battle and Fighters (Neo Geo Pocket). But even beyond the same base the images are identical; the non-Rockman additions to the sprite confirm it.
ReplyDeleteThe only way the sprite on the cover is any different, is the recoloring of several elements to add 'detail'. As a result, NES color limits are broken, making it stand out like a sore thumb even more.
