Coinciding with the art, io9 has provided a brief plot synopsis:
"Let the Games Begin!" Part One: The future looks bright when brilliant and benevolent Dr. Light unveils his latest creations: the Robot Masters! But when the nefarious Dr. Wily steals them for his own sinister purposes, there is no one left to stop him. No one – except Mega Man! Don't miss the first issue of this brand new ongoing series!"
Sounds like your standard run-of-the-mill Mega Man 1 plot. Not like that's a bad thing.
Issue #2 will debut in June, so it looks like we're getting ourselves a monthly serial.

You know, his face looks kinda... fat. Like he has a double chin. Just saying.
ReplyDeleteAt least the plot doesn't involve Rock's first day of school.
ReplyDeleteProfessor Megaman -
ReplyDeleteTrue enough I suppose, but I actually thought the short-lived Dreamwave Mega Man comic was pretty decent.
I didn't mind DW's either. I would have preferred actual robot masters, but showing a different take on Megaman wasn't so bad.
ReplyDeleteI think that's why everyone likes Ariga's stuff. I had some of Ikehara's (was that the name?) manga and although I can't read Japanese I could kind of tell it was the usual "now he goes on to Ice Man" stuff.
Not that I'm passing judgment on the Archie one, just looking forward to it.
And still no place to order a subscription?
ReplyDeleteEh, I didn't really care for the DW comic's implications that Mega Man and Mega Man X were one and the same (granted, they were only implications, but still). The school thing was definitely an interesting angle, but completely unnecessary and, if I may say, really out of place.
ReplyDeleteI might not be the biggest fan of Archie's take on Sonic, but that got to where it was after close to 20 years worth of different writers adding to it. Mega Man is starting off fresh, and Archie does have some talented writers right now. I think there's a good chance of this being a nice little enjoyable something-or-other.
Did DW actually imply that X and Megaman were the same? I thought they appeared simultaneously at the end of the last book.
ReplyDeleteNow that I look at it.... Astro Boy and Megaman-DW are the same. They wanna FIT IN with the humans.
ReplyDeleteNice coincidence, since Megaman became Megaman thanks to an Astro Boy game back out. (Before you comment on this, I read that out of a site, k? I just mentioned it cuase of the coincidence. If I'm wrong just say so and say I'm something and Astro Boy related insults. I don't really follow Astro Boy.)
Ya, the last issue had X traveling back in time, and then the series was canceled.
ReplyDeleteAs for the implications, they were subtle, but they were there. Though I suppose it's possible that maybe I was reading too much into things, but here's what I know.
1. Dr. Light went on about this special chip (I believe) that Rocky (as he called Mega Man) had. Supposedly, this chip allowed him to have human emotions and the ability to be like a human. Ya know, the typical stuff that's often boasted about with X to show how he's different from anything that came before him.
2. In the letters section of one issue, someone wrote in about Mega Man X. I don't remember the specifics, but I remember that this person mentioned Mega Man being upgraded to become Mega Man X, and the people at DW didn't correct him when they replied to his letter.
I suppose this could just be conjecture, but it all leads me to believe that the people at DW really did think that the two characters were one and the same.
@ZeroX_Syaoran: I honestly don't think the similar story elements between Astro Boy and DW Mega Man are a coincidence at all. I'm willing to bet that they were quite intentional; no doubt about that. The real question is whether it was homage or rip-off.
