IGN.com scored an exclusive look at a preliminary variant cover design for the first issue in Archie Comics' Mega Man series. The variant cover (pictured), is being illustrated by Chad Thomas, best known for his work on Sabrina: The Teenage Witch and Young Salem.
The variant will be distributed on a 1-in-5 ratio against the standard cover (illustrated by Patrick "Spaz" Spaziante), so it's more than likely this will become quite the collector's item one day.
Additionally, IGN has also revealed that issue #1 will hit newsstands on May 4, 2011. Curiously, this date contradicts Archie's official teaser, which touts a release sometime in April. Who's got it right? Well, we might just have to wait and find out.
Written by Ian Flynn of Sonic the Hedgehog fame and illustrated by the likes of Patrick "Spaz" Spaziante, John Workman, and Matt Herms, Archie's Mega Man is definitely shaping up to be quite the project. Do look forward to it!

That... actually looks really off to me.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprisingly disappointed. The original cover is *much* better.
@Ash:
ReplyDeleteIndeed. Seems like Chad here is trying to give somewhat realistic proportions to Megaman, which is as bad as trying to do the same thing to Sonic. It just doesn't work that way =/
I don't mind the style but... The perspective is off, which does bug me. I understand that MegaMan is the main focus on the cover, but he should not be standing like that. Anatomy looks off too in the legs. BUT, maybe this is just the art college student in me, and no one else really cares.
ReplyDelete1:5 ratio? So if you're ordering through a subscription, does that mean you just have a 1 in 5 chance of getting that cover? Lame....
ReplyDeleteWhere were these when I was 10 years younger?
ReplyDeleteEw. That alternate cover is a complete turd. I loved the original tho.
ReplyDeleteIs it me or are the legs bothering anyone else?
ReplyDeleteIt's not bad for the most part, it doesn't make sense for his head to not be laid back.
ReplyDeleteThe style is... okay. It's not the worst I've ever seen (especially among the fan community).
I don't see anything wrong with it.
ReplyDeleteWhat's with print publication dates being so wishywashy?
I've said this before and I'll say it again: Chad's MegaMan looks in line with MMU art. It's new, it's mean, and many consider it butt-ugly.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm one of them. I'm not saying it's bad, I just don't think the style fits. So, yeah, I'm going with Spaz. The guy is phenomenal (big fan of his Sonic work).
