Mega Man Universe Is Based Upon Mega Man 2, Says Producer

In a bit of news that's sure to ruffle some feathers around here, Mega Man Universe producer Akiko Ito has confirmed that the game is indeed heavily based upon Mega Man 2 -- not just aesthetically -- but story, bosses and gameplay wise, too. This coming from an interview with Joystiq:

"Mega Man Universe, we surmised from the very beginning, is an amalgamation of familiar elements in a new presentation. According to producer Akiko Ito, it'll contain even more familiar elements than we've seen: the levels and bosses of Mega Man 2:
"The base story and the base game is taken from Mega Man 2, so players can experience Mega Man 2 through this game." She explained that these "default" stages don't have to remain in their original form, as well: "Basically, we're going to create the stages from Mega Man 2 faithfully in this new style, and you can play them as is, or you can customize different sections of them, or you can customize all of it if you want to, so pretty much you can do whatever you'd like with the stages."

In short, Man Universe, at its core, is a revamped Mega Man 2. Some could even argue at this point to say MMU is Mega Man Powered Up 2.

Of course, this doesn't mean all of MMU will be MM2 centric. Recall what we learned from PAX a few weeks ago: "Although the trailers made it seem like MMU is largely influenced by Mega Man 2, there's a 'very good possibility' we'll be seeing content from other Mega Man games." We've already spotted Cut Man amidst a MMU promo image, so this might yet still hold true. It's something to be hopeful for if your not sold on the idea of the game being based around MM2.

  1. NOOOOOOOOO!! Granted, I'm still buying the game, but this Mega Man 2 fad seriously needs to die out already.

  2. We already know CutMan is in there from that blue-lit group shot. If he's in, the rest of the MM1 cast likely is too.

  3. YES! Powered up 2! I don't give a damn if Krazy Monkey likes it or not!

  4. As if it weren't already obvious from the videos and screenshots.

Well, it's not like I can get this anyway.

  5. Overrated game is overrated.

I wonder if we'll still get RMs from the later games (especially non 8-bit games) despite this.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Gosh darn it, much as I love MM2 (I really do, don't get me wrong) I'd rather have Universe cover all of the games. Why limit a sandbox and user creation driven game like this?

Oh wait - release the other game content as DLC! It's foolproof! Think of how much money they can milk!

...I'm going to go mourn the opportunity that was lost...

  7. Well, I was just thinking, if it's basically MM2, why is bad boxart Megaman from MM1 in there? XD And, well, if they like to do things with MM2, let them :P If it doesn't sell well they'll notice it's time to move on soon enough.. Maybe.

  8. I was sure, they will remake all 6 NES games, now I'm disappointed.

I WANT TO SEE A REMAKE OF MEGAMAN 4!!

  9. I think it will fail.

  10. And here comes the hate speech about the game.....

JUST BE GLAD YOU'RE GETTING A "POWERED UP 2", this hate on MMU is NONSENSE!!!!!

  11. Goddamnit!

There are other games aside from 2, damnit Capcom!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I pretty much assumed as much once I saw the similarities between this and Powered Up.

I think it's still a cool concept and best of all I don't have to cram my face into a PSP to enjoy it.

  13. YES!!!! Mega Man 2 is my favorite game period, so I like that it is based off that. I do hope they add a little of Mega Man 3 elements in there as well. I for one am pleased. I think I'll mainly play as Rock Man because he looks like the classic Mega Man. Seems like it will be a fun game to play and be creative with.

  14. MMU is, IMHO, a template where "packs" composed of the revamped games of the original Rockman series will be released, for a price. It must be the logical reasoning behind this. So you will buy MMU for playing MM2, and capcom eventually will release downloadable packs for each one of the mega man games using MMU engine. One will able to play the original megaman series with revamped graphics and many characters. It's the powered up series made cheaper and faster.

  15. So, um, will all the people who said that they wanted MegaMan Powered Up 2 start complaining?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Gee, what a surprise.

I think it will still get good reception among most critics since Mega Man Powered Up did, but I think long-term Mega Man fans (such as myself) will be quite underwhelmed and disheartened.

  17. Is it just me or is MegaMan 2 WAY overrated?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I would've preferred a REAL Mega Man Powered Up 2

  19. Megaman 2 fad? The game is like 21 years old.....That's like saying, "I wish this internet fad would die out already."

  20. @2ndAnon
    Dammit, Beat me to it.

Though, You know, The producer /is/ still making the game, or whoever is making it. The point is, MMU is still a work in progress, So to all you people that dont want a MM2 remake (You know who you are), Theres still a chance it wont be.

  21. Megaman 2 had a story? Wasn't it one of those "Wily's at it again, go save the world now" stories?

    ReplyDelete
  22. INB4 Krazy Monkey!

Pleeeease. I BEG you. Don't complain about this, people.

This is exactly what most of you asked for. This is Powered Up 2, only more... Powered Up.

Please just accept that Capcom isn't going to skip Mega Man 2 just because you don't like it, and that we need to get past Mega Man 2 in order to get to the rest of series.

    Okay, so please?

    ReplyDelete
  23. So much wasted potential... :/

  24. Let's place our bets on how long until you-know-who shows up. I'm placing my chips on the next hour.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Keep in mind that this doesn't rule out a possible Powered Up version of MM2. In the original MMPU, there were two game styles offered: Old Style, which attempts to emulate the original game with the MMPU engine as closely as possible, and New Style, which came with an opening stage, two new Robot Masters, the second and third Wily Stages switched around, and of course, completely different level design and rebalanced boss weaknesses (mostly to accomodate for the Robot Masters being playable). Most of this could be expected in a possible Mega Man 2 Powered Up.

Besides, we saw Cut Man clearly hidden within the silhouettes, didn't we?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I will wait for the final product to judge it. Not much was show of Cut Man, Ryu and Arthur ayet, as well as others elements yet.

Also, what anon 2 said. They should show other newer content soon before Monkey go Krazy! XD

    ReplyDelete
  27. "...so players can experience Mega Man 2 through this game"

That's what Mega Man 2 on the Virtual Console is for. If I want to experience MM2, I'll play MM2.

I'm starting to think Inafune & Co. are obsessed with MM2.

    ReplyDelete
  28. - It's not a matter of being a remake or not, but why "Universe"? Because of different players? When MMU was announced, I had in mind something different than a MM2 remake, like playing as Mega Man through a Ghosts'n Goblins stage for example.

    - Anyway, yes, MMU is Mega Man Powered Up 2, but using a more adult style.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Inb4 Krazy Monkey's obnoxious bitching...

  30. Many people have asked for MMPU2 for quite some time, but really, this is called Universe, not Powered UP 2. I'm kinda disappointed.

  31. Rockman Rockman was a big failure and I think that Rockman dash did not sell too well

Now the fans are asking for another dash game for 5-6 years ?

Why does capcom chose Rockman Rockman 2 over Dash 3 ?

sorry capcom but I'm not interessted in a level editor, ugly 3-D model megaman game

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yep. I think this pretty much confirms everything I've been saying about this game so far.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ugh, here we go with Mega Man 2 again. MMU has already been looking pretty crap to me, and now knowing that its single-player mode is going to be based on Mega Man 2... could this title get any LESS interesting or uninspired?

Ugh. A Powered Up sequel would have been so much better. That was the very definition of what a remake should be; a real, inspired art style (not the crap on display in MMU), and gameplay and story that expands upon the original while staying true to its roots, instead of looking like something completely unrecognizable and turning the canon on its ear.

There is a remote, outside chance that MMU could surprise us all and be awesome. The chances of that being the case at this point, though, have dropped to an all-time low.

Definitely the first time I couldn't care less about an upcoming Mega Man game. I sure hope this isn't indicative of the series' direction as a whole.

    ReplyDelete
  34. WHY DOES CAPCOM IGNORE MEGA MAN 1?

THEY TREAT MM2 LIKE STREET FIGHTER 2 IN THAT IT IS THE ONL STREET FIGHTER.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes! I've always wanted MMPU2! I'll miss the art style though...

    ReplyDelete
  36. @Windsor -

This is not what any of us asked for. This is NOT "Powered Up 2... powered up." Powered Up had an incredible art style and was oozing charm. Universe has a shitty, hyper-Westernized "art style" (I hesitate to even call it that), absolutely no charm and, from what we know of the previews, sluggish controls... that will hopefully get cleaned up before release.

Anyway, make no mistake: this is not, and never will be, the Powered Up sequel that fans have been asking for. If it was, it would have an art and design style that isn't completely awful.

... a real Powered Up 2 would be amazingly nice, though. Especially now.

  41. Yeah, you know what? I'd really hate to say this, but I think it's gotten to the point where I've just about lost faith in the Classic series.

    ReplyDelete
  42. First of all, that headline is horribly sensational and a bit misleading. Second of all, while the base game may be inspired by MM2, Ito mentions exactly that. This is the base part of the game. There's still a lot more to reveal about this game, but the title of this article makes it difficult to understand that.

  47. Looking forward to this game even if it is more MM2 shit. : /

Hopefully the idea behinds this will be more or less what others have stated as far as DLC for additional bosses, stage parts, etc from the other games.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Well, "Powered Up 2" is great and all, but it'd be nice if they were up-front about it instead of pussyfooting around with all the "this new MegaMan game you know nothing about will change platforming forever!"

Personally I'd prefer some MM3 action, but we all know Inafune hates that title for some God-forsaken reason.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Mega Man fans with access to the internet are never happy..

Everyone just shut up. You all have no imagination and cannot fathom the possibilities with this game. You all give a bad name to Americans too. I bet Inafune is thinking "Geez, these Americans are so picky and unpredictable". HE SPOKE ENGLISH FOR US in some of the trailer videos, and we fail to have faith in a man that can do that or continue to deliver what we want and like.

WE SHOULD BE SAYING THANK YOU. Furthermore, DLC is a must these days to combat the second-hand market. Developers lose money, and when that happens, they stop working or are fired, and fewer games we like come out.

And if you don't like Gachapin, then you have no heart.

  50. @Hypercoyote: Sure, its popularity has remained fruitful the past 21 years, but I wasn't talking about that. I was talking about the recent Capcom trend wherefrom every Classic series-related game uses Mega Man 2 as the template.

  51. Fuck the Megaman community and everything it stands for.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Street Fighter II is overrated, not Mega Man 2. And it's still under development. Cut Man anyone? Maybe a angry Shadow Man. Or a more skeletal Skull Man. Centaur Man, Cloud Man, Astro Man and Splash Woman? And Megapin!

  55. WTF? Inafune needs to learn that fans doesnt want megaman 2 over and over again. Make something new with the classic series already!!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. He and Inti did; it was called Mega Man 10. Now he's regressing back in to MM 2 mania (to a degree; there does seem to be at least a little content from MM 1) with Universe. Let's hope Mega Man 11 draws inspiration from 10 and is not based on 2 as well...

    ReplyDelete
  57. (Reads Omar's comment)
Thank you Capcom for a NEW Mega Man game. I was getting bored of remakes and collections of games I've already played. (Even through they were good. Would not mind MHX2, MMPU2, a ZX collection, a MML remake, "Anniversary" Collection 2 for newer consoles (PS3, Wii, 360) with 25 MM games or more, like MM1-10, World 1-5, Wily Wars, Rockboard, Soccer, Battle & Chase, MM&B, PB, PF, MMPU, MHX, X1-6 and Xtreme 1-2.)

Seriously, I think the fans are overrating the game, which is still under development. It's probably not even 20% complete!

Gotta use Hadouken on Wily, the Shadaloo scientist, (Udon comic) or use Arthur to defeat vampire Wily. (Shade Man's stage)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Big surprise. Stop whoring out Mega Man 2, Capcom.

    ReplyDelete
  59. And once again, the fanbase proves that the whole "this fanbase needs to be reset" rant is right.

Let's see if I can cover all the bases here this time.

"In short, (Mega) Man Universe, at its core, is a revamped Mega Man 2. I guess some could even argue at this point to say MMU is Mega Man Powered Up 2."

But unlike MM:PU, MMU makes a rather uncomfortable accentuation on the Stage Editor mode and the Character Customization than this "Story mode", which seems to have been hinted by Ito.

Plus, MM:PU was actually an enhancement of MM1 rather than a mere revamp. Still, I wouldn't really deny that argument. Yet...

"Well, "Powered Up 2" is great and all, but it'd be nice if they were up-front about it instead of pussyfooting around with all the "this new MegaMan game you know nothing about will change platforming forever!""

    THIS.

    @Hypershell

Maybe it's just my imagination, but I think Inafune stated that he doesn't like MM3 because he feels it's incomplete. MM3's release was rushed in the middle of it's development. Hell, I would hate a game that my boss didn't let me polish to perfection too. Which is why I'd love Capcom to go on with the Powered Up series, just to see what kind of stuff was cut off/not implemented from the original MM3 :3.

    @Anon #15

DASH 3 is what I call "not a plaussible corporate project" right now. If Capcom chooses to go with DASH 3, I'm sure they couldn't go with the same dusty DASH 2 engine and the same PSX graphics. The main game engine needs to be redone from scratch; same story with all the improved graphics, rehire all the voice actors and so on, and so on... Obviously, this cost a crapload of money. Which in turn is a risky move if you consider you're investing your money in the revival of a really old series.

Long story short, DASH 3 would be like the MM9 move all over again, but with even more money to put on the line. It's a pretty risky idea, and we already know Capcom likes to do the same moves "just because it's safer that way"

    @Mr-Aoki

Yes, that's how it should be called.

    "Mega Man: Powered Up"

    "Mega Man 2: Powered Up"

    --------------------------

I've already stated my thoughts on this game: looks iffy, but looks are not a critical aspect of the game. PLUS, IT'S STILL IN BETA.

    ReplyDelete
  60. One of the things you've really got to think about the Legends series and continuing it is that it ended on a cliff hanger, that is sort of a prohibitive thing in getting new people to join the series if you start resolving it. And realistically without that new base I don't see Capcom being able to make money on it.

I really don't see Legends coming back without doing some sort of reboot or retelling of the earlier games. It's not like Classic or X where the plot can be simplified into: Wily/Sigma did shit and Mega Man/X stopped him.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I saw this coming miles away. Megaman 2 is a fine game - but it's not the best in the classic series, it's the most popular.
