You've mentioned before that you're not fond of the way Mega Man 3 was developed, that you were rushed through the process to release the game on time. Would you ever want to go back and remake that or any other Mega Man title, similar to the way CAPCOM remade Bionic Commando with Rearmed?
Inafune: Would I like to remake just Mega Man 3? Probably not so much. Would I like to remake the entire series with a modern look and feel? That's something I'd be very interested in doing.
Something like Mega Man Universe? How did the idea for that project come around?
Inafune: Universe is a unique project. As the title suggests, it's big. It's a whole universe. Some aspects from older Mega Man titles that I wanted to revisit might find their way in there, but it's going to expand far, far beyond that and be all about what fans want to see.
People must ask you this next question a lot, so I apologize. Do you have any plans to make another Mega Man Legends game?
Inafune: I do hear that question a lot, and it's still very much on my radar. My big fear is that if we did start doing it, investing all that time and money into it, the fans would just say “we don't need that.” If I do end up doing it, please support me and don't change your minds halfway through!
Who's your favorite Mega Man boss character?
Inafune: Well, he's not necessarily my favorite character, but the first character I designed for the games would be Elec Man, so I have a soft spot for that character. I was reading American comics at the time, so I got that sort of imagery with the mask and everything.
Be sure to check out Anime News Network for the complete interview. Thanks for the tip, Ralene!

ReplyDeleteUNDENIABLE PROOF OF EVERYTHING I'VE BEEN SAYING FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS!!!!
''if we did start'', so he's not working on it apparently. Funny, I used to love Elec Man too (and the sound his attack makes XD)
ReplyDeleteI'm shocked that Inafune's favorite robot master is my favorite robot master too
ReplyDelete"Shocked" pun was not intended
"My big fear is that if we did start doing it, investing all that time and money into it, the fans would just say “we don't need that.”"
ReplyDeleteSolid proof that either he hasn't been paying attention to the fanbase, or he's been paying way too much attention to the fanbase. Can't tell which yet.
Carda.TXT --
ReplyDeleteI'd say it's the latter. Definitely the latter.
@Masterge77 - hate to break it to you but Elec Man's not his favorite.
ReplyDelete"Well, he's not necessarily my favorite character, but the first character I designed for the games would be Elec Man"
@Saito - You've been saying that Inafune's fear is that if they started making Legends 3, people would back out of interest for it? AMAZING!
If anything was to be said, it would be that more attention to the fanbase than one expects.
ReplyDeleteWe hear lots of calls for MML3, but I still can't tell if that's just a lot of a vocal minority (me included) or if megaman fans in general have had the series grow on them. It did fail the first time around, after all.
ReplyDeleteI hope it's made regardless.
I think Mr. Inafune was referring to hype backlash with that MML3 comment.
ReplyDeleteAs for remaking the entire series...sounds interesting, but I'd hate to see the resulting game(s) override the originals.
The more interviews Inafune gives, the more I really think he does understand fans, quite well. The whole "don't change your minds halfway through!" bit just reinforces it-- the fanbase itself has known for ages that they are unpleasable as are many others, and it's kind of funny to see Inafune acknowledge this fickleness. I really respect the guy.

ReplyDeleteThis is why 90% of the Megaman community needs to stop bitching, zip their mouths shut, and not judge a game before even remotely playing it. It has got to be one of my biggest beefs with the Megaman community, a majority of it's members are completely biased, thinking "Oh this new stuff is shit". No, it isn't.
It's 100% worse when these people judge Legends as "Not worth playing" because it's a 3D Megaman game. So what? It's 3D, try it out. Because a majority of these people have NEVER played it.
So for those of you who haven't played Legends and say "We don't need that." I say to you:
The Megaman community doesn't need your bullshit opinions.
@Hypercoyote:
ReplyDeleteNot specifically Legends 3, but a lot of the stuff for Rockman in general. I've been saying that it's mostly the fans who complain about EVERYTHING, that are the reasons why Capcom and Inafune are so hesitant to try something new or try and "finish" some of their older stuff.
DASH, ZX, SSR are three good examples.
@Saito
ReplyDelete...You really are an idiot...
"don't change your minds halfway through!"
ReplyDeleteFanbase: We want a Sonic game staring only Sonic!
Sega: Have Sonic 4!
Fanbase: Boo! Sonic's eyes are green, the music doesn't sound 32-bit, this game sucks!
*cough* I can get where he's coming from, yeah.
Aside from me I can't think of one person who's a Megaman fan who DOESN'T like the Legends series. If Legends 3 was announced I think entire continents would spontaneously squee across the planet. I wouldn't care either way, but I'd LOVE to see masses of fans explode in big balls of confetti and paper hearts :D
I'll be honest. I played Mega Man Legends about seven years ago, and I didn't think it was anything special. But hey, at least I actually played the game first before judging it, unlike most other people, who'll automatically dismiss certain games if they're not in 2D or 8-bit.
ReplyDeleteThen again, maybe that's because I was playing the game through an emulator. Should Capcom find their way around the problems preventing its rerelease on Playstation Network, then I'll be willing to givbe it another chance.
As long as he knows where he's going with it, Legends 3 gets my vote.
ReplyDeleteInafune doesn't care about how much fans whine. He cares about how much Legends 3 would sell. That's all.
ReplyDelete"Would I like to remake just Mega Man 3? Probably not so much. Would I like to remake the entire series with a modern look and feel? That's something I'd be very interested in doing."
ReplyDeleteMega Man Powered Up,anyone?
@Tcat
ReplyDeletewhile that may be true today, back before legends or legends 2 came out there were a lot of mega man fans who did exactly that. they thought that because it was in 3d and more of an adventure game than a platformer that it would suck, and thus never picked it up. its one of the reasons that the mml games didnt sell too well, but over the years many who have played them have come to enjoy them, and honestly most mega man fans ive talked to today list legends 1 or 2 as their favorite in the series.
The megaman fanbase is so divided and quick to bash its own members. I'm ashamed of it.
ReplyDeleteInafune, kick your subjects into order!
Remaking the whole series? ... Hmm... I wouldn't mind them continuing with Powered up at all.
ReplyDeleteAt the same time... Rather than a re-make of the old parts, I'd prefer Megaman Legends 3 or Megaman X 9...
...
Or, as many fans probably would disagree: MegamanX Axl <3
So if he is not working on Legends 3 I wonder if that oft-requested Megaman game being developed is in fact X9?!
ReplyDelete@Anonymous #6:
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's either that, or Mega Man: Powered Up 2. After all, Inafune did claim that it has a "strong chance of happening" a while back:
http://protodudesrockmancorner.blogspot.com/2009/12/inafune-talks-mega-man-x9-powered-up-2.html
I love it how GoNintendo totally took the story and made it look like The Mega Man Network conducted the interview instead of ANN.
ReplyDeleteHonestly if a Legends 3 ever came out, I really don't see it doing well outside it's established fanbase due to the cliffhanger ending of Legends 2. So his concerns about the game flopping are pretty well justified if you ask me.
