I asked Inafune-san if there are any plans to make a MegaMan X9 soon (Obviously to let him know that was the game I would want made) and he said that there are no plans for a X9 for now. If they make a X game it won’t be X9."
If not X9, then what? A sequel to one of the many side games? Or maybe something new entirely? Feel free to speculate, but I wouldn't get all too worked up until we hear something a bit more official.

ReplyDeleteI would guess that they will attempt another Maverick Hunter X game, will revisit the RPG genre with another Command Mission type game, or perhaps try an entirely new direction with the series. There's no telling. However, it isn't too surprising given their recent views on X series canon; perhaps they want to go back and do something better with the story.

ReplyDeleteChances are likely that Command Mission 2 or Xtreme 3 isn't what he's referring to, seeing how he made little contribution to those spin-offs. The most likely would be IHX2.
ReplyDeleteAlthough at this point, even that seems unlikely seeing how it's been such a long time since IHX came out. But at the very least, from this statement, there seems to be hope...

Doubtful it'll happen, but if it does, I could see it on the DS or 3DS... or heck, if they make it retro like they did with MM9 and 10, then I can see it being released even for the DSiWare and/or as a PSP download game or something.

During the 22nd Anniversary thing from four months ago, he said that he wants to do something "completely different" with Mega Man first, before he does create X9.
Disappointment. I want them to further Axl and Lumine's story where it left off from X8... But I guess I'll wait to see what they have in store.

ReplyDeleteMy best guess is that he means it wouldn't be X9 story-wise, since the recent retcon of the MMX storyline removed X6-X8 and Command Mission from the equation completely. (I think it was X6, maybe X7, can't remember)

Eh, not surprising. Compared to what Inafune says about wanting to develop Legends 3, the situation regarding X9 is way on the opposite side of the spectrum. This should have been clear since his answer to the X9 question during the 22nd anniversary stream.
Compared to everything he's said about Legends 3, he's shooting the possibility of X9 down. He's more or less further admitting that he and the development teams of Capcom don't really want to make X9, or at least treat it as something that's low priority. He's not making any excuses here at all.
Of course, the more hopeful among us might think that he's setting us up for a huge surprise, although I personally wouldn't count on anything happening for at least the next three years. (Three, as in who knows what's going to happen on the year of the 25th anniversary?)
No one said that X9 was "canceled," or that it even existed in the first place. Rather, Inafune is saying that an X9 project won't be the next X game we see, but rather something different. Will there be an X9 one day? Probably so, but not as soon as most people would hope.

Inafune did say in the artbook collection that he doesn't want to touch anything like Command Mission. My bet's on Irregular Hunter X 2 or a Rockman fighting game.
ReplyDeleteWasn't Mega Man ZX Advent essentially a homage to Axl? I mean, sure, it ended up being "Model A" for "Albert," but looking at Model A's color scheme, weaponry (dual handguns), and special ability (shape-shifting)... It was obvious that it was based off of Axl. That and Model A itself had a child-like personality. So I'd say Axl pretty much did get his own game already.

X7, X8 and Command Mission where not bad games (but X7 wasn't good either :P), but given the messed timeline, X9 and MMXCM2 are unlikely to happen. But other series like classic, Legends, Battle Network and Star Force can have RPG elements like MMXCM without problems.
ReplyDeleteOkay, as far as I can tell (meaning "as far as I'm concerened,") that time line is significant only to the Zero series timeline, which is a splinter from the X series.
ReplyDeleteThis is not to say that X6-XCM didn't happen, but only that they are relevant to the Zero series timeline.
The way I see it, the X series "branched" after X5 (or, depending on who you ask, X6), with one branch being the Zero series and subsequent ZX series, while X6 (or X7) and onward continues the X series story.
This is relavent, because it means that X9 is still a possibility. Just not now. Thus, if a new X game is made, it is likely to be either MHX 2, CM 2, or Xtreme 3, any of which I'd gladly play.
In the above sentence however is the operative word: IF. As much as it pains me to say it, I don't really think there's going to be a new X game coming any time soon.
