Technical Difficulties Preventing PSN Powered Up Release

If you may recall, Mega Man Powered Up was scheduled to become a digital download on PlayStation Network back in November 2009. It's late March now and the game has yet to release on either North American or European PSN services. What's the hold up? Christian Svensson, Capcom’s Corporate Officer/VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development, had this to say:

"There are technical problems that neither we or Sony are able to get around. The game doesn't run properly when put in digital form.  So it's physical only for the time being (hold onto those UMDs, they're gonna be valuable)."

Curiously, things seem to be A-OK with the game's Japanese counterpart, Rockman Rockman, which has been available on the JPN PSN for quite some time now...

  1. I don't understand. If the Japanese version of this game runs so perfectly, why is it that the American and European versions do not? Aren't they pretty much the same game, anyway, just in different languages? This makes absolutely no sense to me.

  2. It makes even less sense than that. UMD discs are not region-protected (as in, you can play whatever region on whatever PSP), so unless there's something intrinsically different about the American version, there should be no reason for it to be problematic.

  4. Capcom should release MMPU & MHX to NDS and consoles. PSP is not the best choice...

  5. @StormOwl:

I own the UMD, too, but I still think it would have been nice to see that get added to the Playstation Store. And that way, if it sells good enough, then they'll finally make the sequel, which many people have been asking for.

  6. Two words: Copy Protection.

The US version is probably heavily modded to keep pirates from being able to pirate it and run it on PC emulators- and this is the result.

  7. I have this game both by umd and by ripping it to an eboot. It runs fine, he must mean somehing else we don't know about.

But it's already been pirated, lol.

  9. it could be a problem with disc calling functions, kinda like the new kingdom hearts, if anyone's been following that; disc calls might be a reason for why there isn't a PSN release, aside from Disney apparently saying no on the licensing for it.

worst comes to worst, capcom might have to redo the eboot binary to remove this problem. but that's too much effort, obviously. if Capcom Co. managed to do it, they could at least pool their resources with Capcom USA and CE to alleviate this problem.

  10. @Distaffected,

No, I can decrypted this game and run on JCPSP emulator just fine with a little bit slow fps speed. It has no copy protection at all.

Yeah, I was about to say the same thing. I ripped my copy I bought as well and it ran fine. I'm sure the problem is once Sony ads their DRM to it, it breaks something.
