Operate Shooting Star Website Updates

Capcom updated the official Rockman EXE Operate Shooting Star website today, revealing a new "game info" section.  There, you'll find information concerning OSS' story and various systems. Unfortunately, if you've already played EXE1/BN1, there's really nothing new here...

Information summary:
  • For the most part, the storyline is the same as the original game. The website details some of the earlier scenarios such as Fire Man's invasion and Number Man taking over the school computer.
  • OSS retains the old "Level" based power-up system.
  • The Custom window has received an overhaul, borrowing elements that were adapted in EXE2 and onwards such as two row chip selection and the addition of * coded chips.
  • "Escape" has been assigned to the L button. In the original game, "escape" was a Battle chip.
  • Battle chips can be traded wirelessly with friends. Local wireless only, no WiFi.
  • When in the "real-world", the touch screen is used to operate the PET menu.
If it wasn't clear enough before, OSS is definitely an "enhanced port" of Rockman EXE 1. It's not a full blown remake, but a port with some very minor changes/additions and a Shooting Star/Star Force subplot to boot.

On a semi-related note, the OSS website also announced that Mazakasu Eguchi, aka "Mr. Famous", will make a special guest appearance at the Tokyo Game Show next weekend.  Special prizes will be available during the event such as an exclusive sticker set.

Expect more info in the coming week.

  1. Other than the SSR features, this is a pretty barebones "remake", huh?

  2. I think without WiFi features, the multiplayer in this game is going to be very bad.

One of the biggest problems with the EXE games was that there was almost nobody besides yourself who had the game within close proximity. That made it near-impossible to try out the multiplayer features of the game.

SSR2 and SSR3 finally fixed this problem by having WiFi-Battles, and SSR1 fixed it a little bit by having WiFi Card Trading (via BrotherBand Emails).

Having the WiFi removed in this one is really a large step backwards than forward. :/

  3. NO WIFI?

    FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-

  4. Yep. :\ It's kind of disgusting, really... The lack of work. But I guess I'll still get it.

  6. *SIGHING* Remake, huh ? I am getting sick of it.

  7. Remake of which ExE is it actually?

  8. I kinda get the feeling this is going to be terrible :/

  9. "remake"... lol capcom

    more like rehash amirite?

  10. Mr. Famous! Woot! But no wifi? Fail. Way to disgrace the series by actually bringing it back, but only with a crappy port, Capcom.

  11. I thought it would be different and no wifi? Why Is the same as exe 1, but as always i'm still buying it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Only reason I'd buy this is because I don't have Battle Network 1

    ReplyDelete
  13. Why remake battle network 1 anyway? It's not even the good battle network game!

    ReplyDelete
  14. It is going to be underrated and low sell, I betcha. Stupid decision.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Really, that's it? Umm, wow. I don't mean to pass "pre-release judgement," but this has got to be one of the worst rehashes I have ever seen. Anybody else feel like kicking Capcom in the groin for yet another disappointment?

*Sigh* I hate to say it, but I think Capcom needs to give Mega Man a break for awhile if this is all we're going to get... =( And sadly, I kind of see this game selling a lot, and Capcom will make more rehashes instead of quality Mega Man games, but I also can see this game totally bombing and then no more Mega Man. However, if it does sell well, it will be pretty messed up if this sells better than the good quality remakes of Maverick Hunter X and Powered Up, which would prove my point about more rehashes.

I really do miss the days where they used to rotate the two genres of Platformer and RPG games, like when they used to rotate Mega Man Zero with Mega Man Battle Network or Mega Man Star Force with Mega Man ZX each year. Everyone was happy then (well, more so then now anyway). I fully believe Capcom needs to take a break from the RPG style of Mega Man for a bit (don't get me wrong, I have fond memories of BN, and Starforce was becoming a decent series), and go back to the platformer style.

I apologize if this comment comes out as being pessimistic or rude. =)

  16. Way to let your fans down, Crapcom.

  17. I'm glad i never played the original one :/

  18. Cool, capcom had the chance to give us a chance to play battle network against others via wifi but even they would screw us over by not adding it in. Honestly, I don't think we'll ever get a battle network/exe game that will have wifi capibilities. Truly Disgraceful and annoying. Not worth it imho and still owning the original game itself, this really is not worth it.

  19. Seems like they made an awful big hype about a minor re-release....

    ReplyDelete
  20. Wait... Yeah, his eyes ARE still blue in the mugshot!

  21. It's offical Capcom is about to milk this series to death. I hope they actually but some real work into the next MegaMan game. This is not a remake it's more like EXE 1,6, AND SF 1 were thrown into a blender and this was the result.

  22. Sad part is I'm still going to buy this game.

  23. ...wow. This post turned into a conga line of "BAAAAW".

@Saito: I'm pretty sure the MMSF WiFi still required someone within close proximity...

  24. I really like how everyone's freaking out because it's the same story from EXE 1, which unless you're reading this for the first time, should not be news. It's always been an, uh, "Alpha Port" I think the term was? They came out of the gates saying it was a port of the first game with extra features.

Plus, you all seem to be ignoring the screenshots from last update. You know, the ones with Ryuusei no Rockman in 2-d style? Or the screens from awhile ago with Clockman? And Subaru talking to Netto? Maybe you just forgot about them?

I maintain my excitement. I'm hardly ever on WiFi enough on Starforce to care about that. Fortunately, I've got friends to get into BN/SF with me, so no worries there.

  25. Some of the stuff here definitely does re-assure me a bit, though. Specifically that the Custom Screen is, indeed, revamped to be more like EXE2-3, and that are * code chips (YES!!). That might make PAs worth something, especially if they keep the old PA rule. I wonder if Folder rules will still be the same, or if we'll be able to get a second folder now... hmmm.

I get the feeling that there is SOMETHING Capcom isn't telling us. I just can't shake the feeling that this is ALL there is... Especially because of the lack of Wifi. Maybe I shouldn't get my hopes up.

  26. I never play online wifi. (and not just because I can't beat anyone >_>) If I'm not mistaken, these types of ports are not too uncommon in Japan. So while we're whining (rightfully so, I think), this is just a nice way for Japanese people to play an old favorite on their newer systems. It's like Metroid Prime Trilogy on the Wii. (Though I admit, that is three games in one)

I'm just happy I'll be able to battle my brother without faulty link cables and no backlight. Haven't net battled anyone in at least 5 years, I'd say...

  27. Oh, and about the mugshot with his eyes STILL blue... I guess it really is true that it's because that's the part of Saito's DNA that was adjusted to prevent synchronization. I figured it was conjecture but I guess it really is a good guess about what was changed. They have a green background, they could have used green for the eye color, so it's not a matter of a color, I don't think...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Huh? I'm confused. Saito had brown eyes and Rockman has green ones. When were they blue? I must have missed something...

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow, I just got depressed about the whole thing. I'm a huge fan of Ryuusei and was hoping the whole "alpha plus" thing was a misunderstanding (now it sounds even more barebones than I thought). I still have a bit of fan-faith, but honestly, considering how it *looks* I wouldn't be surprised if CoA decided to skip it.

Actually, I recently replayed EXE1 because it was one of the few I didn't fully beat or remember too well. So there's that, too -_- I know I'll be kicking myself a little bit thinking about why they couldn't just make SSR4 or, if people seem to think SSR is so bad for whatever bizarre reason, EXE7...

  31. what is the level system, Still I am sure that they are goinh to dish out something awesome soon or during the TGS. When is it anyways?

  32. There IS something Capcom`s not telling us,what has happned to the speculation? This could all be a long lasting joke-the true work Capcom has put into this has yet to be revealed...I declare most comments above faulty!
Also where does it say there is no WIFI?And why do you think Capcom`s doing this?To get everyone`s opinion on this being bad and last week-Capcom announces the true colors of this game. Now you may think that this is false because of forms announced,Capcom`s purposely giving very little good informtion to get us psyched. If you don`t belive me go use a time machine and you`ll see that I`m not making baseless conjectures.

  33. I don't see much reason to download this and waste my time with it...unless there's really nothing else for me to play in the summer.

Then again, it HAS been many years since I played the first Battle Network, so it might be fun again.

  34. No. Back then, there were several concepts and perceptions of Megaman that are faulty. Notice the galring differences when you look at some images.

  36. It looks like no innovations are coming back.

  37. I hope there's somehow still hope for a Star Force 4 down the line.

I know SF 3's ending pretty much wrapped it up, but the series has gotten so good. And plus, the stuff that happens to SF Mega Man and Omega-Xis in OSS does take place after SF 3, so there is possible cause to continue the storyline after whatever happens to them in OSS, too.

I'd say I would love to see Battle Network 7, but we all know that's not going to happen -- and I'm kind of glad, because Capcom restarting it again after committing to a true ending would just make it feel cheap to me. (The same reason I wouldn't want to see a Zero 4.)

But Star Force? The jury's still out on that series. Capcom has not officially announced that SF 3 was the end, though they likely ended it the way they did so that SF 3 could act as a wonderful ending to the story if they just can't find cause to go back and make a fourth one, sales-wise.

Hell, I'd even take a Star Force 4 where they reverse OSS' deal and have MegaMan.EXE and Lan jump forward in time 200 years to Geo's timeline. I just don't want it to end yet. It started off pretty weak, yeah, I'm not denying that. But Star Force has since come into its own as a great series that I think can stand apart from Battle Network on its own merits.

Since OSS does seem to be little more than a BN 1 port with some BN 2+ battle system tweaks and a subplot involving Geo and Omega-Xis jumping into the story from the future, I'm hoping that good sales (if they are good) will inspire Capcom to not abandon Star Force yet. After all, the game does seem to be just a very bare-bones port, which means a lot of the sales would have to be coming from fans who are interested in seeing how Geo and Omega-Xis figure into everything, not replay an eight-year old game that has just barely been changed... no matter how wonderful it is to see Lan and MegaMan.EXE again.

I don't know, I'm just hoping OSS isn't the end of the BN/SF line of games. I'm not ready to send SF off yet...

  38. Hmm, so this is basically a port of EXE1, with a "What If" time travel scenario involving Star Force characters. Not as bad as I thought it was going to be. It is getting real interesting to me now. Hopefully more news is revealed at the Tokyo Game Show!

  42. MaverickHunterAsh, I disagree. While I have enjoyed the series so far, it's really time to put it to rest.
