Regardless of Powered Up's initial sales performance, my hopes for a sequel run high: re-releases in Japan were quite successful, warranting a "Best Price! edition" while Mega Man 9 proved there's still an interest in the classic series between fans and non fans. Indeed, it would seem a Powered Up 2 would be inevitable, right? Not quite.
In response to my inquiry, Christian Svensson, Capcom's VP of Strategic Marketing and Buisness Development, had this to say:
"As far as the potential for a PU2, anything is possible, but not likely anytime soon."
Bah, humbug. Well, here's hoping for the next best thing: Mega Man 10.
Is that a "water mana" tear?
ReplyDeleteYes :)
ReplyDelete...the next best thing?
ReplyDeleteYou mean you'd prefer a sequel to a remake that bastardized series canon rather than a new entry in the series itself?
Can you ask for MML3...?
ReplyDelete@Anon1: Well, I wouldn't necessarily say bastardize, it's just a different take on the canon -- a side dish if you will.
ReplyDeleteQuite frankly, I would love to see another Powered Up alongside MM10.
MML3 would be better. :)
ReplyDeleteBah mhx2 and mml3 I say!
ReplyDeleteWell, both Legends3 and PoweredUp2 (MegaMan2 remake) would be very cool, a big strike if you ask me. Anyway, I can't believe the "final veredict" belongs to one man only.
ReplyDeleteInafune-san is Capcom's Miyamoto. Sure, he can't do whatever he wants, but Capcom of Japan surely trusts his decisions. I hope that Inafune wants to make MMPU2.
ReplyDeletebastardized? I think not. MMPU gave the game a really cool story line. Plus being able to play as any of the robot master? I mean come on. Sure, the chibi look could be a turn off for some, but that series rocked. I bought my PSP for that and MHX. And yeah, I would definitely love to see a MHX2. Heck, I'd love to see MHX2 - 6. Anytime they expound on the storyline, I'm a sucker for it. Too bad you couldn't play as the mavericks in MHX, but Vile was just as nice :)
ReplyDeleteI say Scramble battle with Wii and DS connectivity.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me very very sad
ReplyDelete@Hypercoyote: I bought my PSP almost exclusively for MMPU and MMHX as well.
ReplyDeleteSo much fun was had with those games!
MMPU2 is all I ask for. They don't need to make any more after that.
ReplyDelete@ HyperCoyote:
ReplyDeleteIf they continued to remake Powered Up games then newbies would start taking everything those games say as cannon (such as the lead character's name being "Mega" instead of "Rock").
There are other ways in which PU bastardized the series---in every main series game (excluding the first one, and up to MM9) they would show you the robot masters ID number (i.e. the DWN). By adding Oil Man and Time Man to the original game, every robot master after them would now need new numbers: it's little things like that that irk longtime fans like me. The "really cool story" that you allude to is nowhere near as cool as the stories told through the original games themselves in the intros, cut-scenes, manuals, and ending scenes. I grew up with that canon, and I would not like to see it phased out and replaced with what I perceive to be nothing more than a gimmicky remake.
